There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. does anyone keep a gas can with them?

Hello all,

I know this may seem like a crazy question, but does anyone keep a gas can of any sort with them while on spYder trips. I know it gets roughly 30 mpg, but with only 6 gallons of fuel that still isn't that far. I remember leaving Texas(in my truck) going to Georgia and when we got to Louisiana there were just some places I refused to stop and get gas. All of those trees for miles and miles I would have never been found or would have never found my way out, lol! I guess once I get one, knowing when to stop and fill back up will be 2nd nature...

I don't, but there are a lot of SL's that do. When I want to stretch it, I get consistently 150 miles before my gas light goes on. I usually fill up every hundred miles or so when on the road. I need to stretch, etc. by that time.

Were I to travel the arctic circle road--I would take an extra gas can with me. Every place else I have been, has never been more than 100 miles between gas stations.

Only on Vacation

The only time we carry is on a trip, when the trailer is attached. It rides on the tongue atop the icechest. Better safe than sorry. Never been anywhere yet that is to far between stops. We usually stop every 50-75 miles anyway..remember we're on vacation so time is not in the equation..But atleast we could help a :doorag: brother out if they were stranded.

I usually carry a Reda can in the left saddle bag. One word of warning is that if you do this you probably will never be able to use the compartment for anything else due to the smell of gas.

I carry two REDA cans and a small bottle of Stabil fuel stabilizer on long trips or when traveliong where gas stations are sparse. Rotopax is also a good tank, but they are hard to store on a Spyder without a trailer.

I have 2 Reda gas cans. On long trips I carry at least one of those with me, it depends on whether or not I have the trailer with me. (I rode 650 miles from here to Lamonster's BBQ in September with no extra tanks on board).

If you want a more big-time fuel transport, check out Mr Orange's awesome set up!

Fuel Bottles

We carry four 32oz. MSR red fuel bottles in our rear cargo, when we are riding. The fuel bottles are made out of aluminum and don't seem to leak, because there isn't a gas smell in the cargo compartment. We've carried food in the same cargo compartment as the fuel, without any issues. We purchased these fuel bottles, because neither of us felt safe with carrying one of those leaky plastic gas cans on our Spyder, due to the fire danger in the event of an accident. We wanted to carry some extra fuel with us, while we were testing the range of our Spyder. So far, we've been able to get up to 150miles, similar to what others have posted. Eventually, we want to try riding until the gas tank is completely empty, to determine the maximum range of our Spyder, so we'll need the fuel bottles to make it back to a gas station.

Some do, I don't. Everyone runs out of fuel before I do so it isn't a problem unless I'm riding by myself. Then I have trouble stopping for fuel and I've gotten very close a few times.

There is a very vocal member of this site that did the same thing (hmm...who would I know?). However, he doesn't remember how many miles he got before running out!!! nojoke

(oh yeah...it was not me!)

When I went to SITR I took a gas can, but it was on my trailer. On the way back I was looking for a gas station, and could not find one. We stopped and had dinner so I put the gas from the gas can in my tank, and of course the next exit had two gas stations. While I did not really have to use it, but it sure was a nice "piece of mind" having it.

When we travel we always pull the RT622 trailer and carry two Reda gas containers. If you are going west there are many areas that can have a streach of highway where you might not find a gas station for 100+ miles.:lecturef_smilie: It sure gives you "peace of mind" to have a couple of gallons behind you.:2thumbs:

I do a lot of solo riding into the middle of the desert. I try to plan my gas stops every 120miles at max, but you just never know, so I keep two reda cans in my left saddlebag at all times. It does fume a bit, but the only thing I keep on that side are tools, so I don't care overly much.

Last week I "think" I nearly ran out of gas. Set out from home with 2 bars showing on my '08 GS fuel gauge. It soon went down to 1 bar & the red fuel light came on. Not long after that the last bar went out.
I quickly exited the freeway & gassed up.

It took exactly 20 litres (5.3 USG) to fill it to the brim. According to the owners book that would mean I still had 5 litres (1.3 USG) left in the tank. I really did fill it right to the top as well. I had been 270km (170 miles).

I have 4 of the MSR aluminum cans but only used them on my V-Max which had a stupidly small tank.

I really need to take a couple of them with me & actually run out of gas (not on a freeway though) to see how much gas I actually have, or how far I can ride, after the last bar goes out on the fuel gauge..

My mechanic told me that you can go about 20 miles once the last bar is gone. I have never gone that far myself.

does it hurt anything?

I see a few of you are willing to run out of gas to get the true mpg of your spYder. My question is, will letting the tank go to empty cause any issues. I am not a big hands on guy with automotives but i know with a car they say you can get air or trash in your gas tank if it goes too low. Is that true for the spYder?

Never had a problem running my tank low, And twice to empty, :dontknow:

With filters at the gas pumps and on the Spyder, I don't think that's something to worry about.,

Besides with the Spyders tank being so small [Relatively] You'll be putting fresh gas in the tank every 150/180 miles.

Gass can.

hey mr. orange, I like and want that gas tank setup ...it's awsome! can you post specifics on how to acquire this setup$. I have a 2012 RT SE5. cheers!
