• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Do you belong to a local Spyder club?

Spyder Clubs

Down south in Georgia, we don't hardly have any Spyder's! Only 2 in my home town, so I ride with my friends that I rode with when I rode Harley's,
Savannah, GA has a club, but they are 160 miles away! A new club has been formed in Tallahassee, FL and I am a member of it, but they are over a 100 miles away and ride on the same Saturday of the month that my local motorcycle club rides on! We need strong dealers, better Spyder Tech's at our dealers, and more Spyder's sales for that to happen! Need Can Am to get involved at the Daytona, FL bike week, and other activities to help increase sales!

I tried to start a Spyder group back in 08. There were (and still are) very few Spyder riders.

It fizzled out in 09.

There was a pretty good non-spyder club in those days and we also rode with them. We would have up to 50 bikes at each weekly ride. Spouse and I were the only Spyders interested at the time.

Time and politics has led to the demise of that club also. Linda and I now ride with each other. Its safer, more fun, and we don't have to worry about what others think.

Legal Stuff: we used the "clubs" legal disclaimer papers, and fortunately never had to worry about any incidents. It only takes one A$$ hole to screw things up though. Glad I no longer have to worry about that part.

Our club days are officially over.:yes:

I know Spyders have been around 10 years now, but I think it's only in the last 5 years or so that there has been enough 'critical mass' of owners in any one geographical area to support the formation of clubs. And, I think healthy clubs and rallies are essential to providing Can-Am, its dealers and after-market sellers the kind of visibility, support and feedback necessary for them to continue making and supporting these amazing machines.

So, in the interest of helping spread the word about Spyders and engendering greater camaraderie around them, and maybe helping local clubs become more successful, I'd like to get some feedback from you all about your experience with SRA clubs in your area.

  1. Do you belong to one? If so, what do they do that you like and what could be improved, in order to enhance your experience with the club?
  2. Have you considered joining one, or have joined but since quit? What were your reasons for that?
  3. Would you like to join one, but the nearest one is too far away to make active membership in it viable for you?
  4. And, for those of you with more experience on this forum, is there another thread I should be using? Are there any tools on here, such as surveys, that I should consider using?

Finally, and here is the BIG one depending on what state you're in - how does your club manage the potential risk of personal liability (for officers in particular) should someone be injured or property damaged on a club ride or other event? I don't believe that BRP provides any protection for clubs organized under its charter (Spyder Ryders of America), does it?

Thanks.

I would be be interested in joining a local club, however, nothing in my area

I hear ya; those things can be deadly to the health of a social riding group.

Glad to hear you have some good friends to ride with, regardless of the type of bike. I agree on the other points.

I like it! How do you coordinate your group rides if I may ask?

Hi of course you may ask... Generally we put rides up on Facebook - at least four main sites. Anyone can start a ride "idea" - planned ahead or spontaneous - and if people are free, and in the area, they join in - we click 'going' or email the organiser as a courtesy. Whoever plans it leads the others, and someone is always happy to be tail end Charlie.

As with most groups however it is generally one or two who do the most organising. The group I mostly ride with has a ride a month, with one couple usually putting the ride on Facebook and planning the calendar, and it's generally around the last Sunday of the month. She is a bit busy for the next month, so someone else - maybe me! - will put a ride event up.

One group has meetings & etc, and keeps rides to its 'members', but this is the exception rather than the rule here.

We are off with our favourite group (in a couple of months) for a two day trip up north to ride around Bathurst Mount Panorama racing circuit (sadly at the posted limit of 60kph as it is a street circuit) then a bit further north to the Sydney suburbs for some indoor sky diving - spyder riders are joining in from all over. There are a couple of big annual events too, again thru Facebook and forums.

I like it because we can join in with most groups any time it suits or when travelling around, meet new people, and keep away from cliques and infighting which it seems bedevil many clubs or groups. Not to say there isn't any of that here, cos there definitely is... but all are welcome to join in, even if it's just occasionally. No dues or fees at all.

Here in our neck o the woods it's S.O.A.R. (spyder owners and riders) The group does a weekly dinner gathering/ride to a different destination each Wed. It's based out of Johnson Creek, WI, which is about 60 miles away. We've made a few of those. They also have an annual event, that's in its 5th year this summer, called Rendezvous. The group also gathers members to ride out to LaCrosse, WI in the spring for a sponsored event called Spyder Spin. No dues or anything, just a coordinated "group" of riders.

Menifee, CA

  1. Do you belong to one? NO
  2. Have you considered joining one, or have joined but since quit? YES. NONE IN MY AREA.
  3. Would you like to join one, but the nearest one is too far away to make active membership in it viable for you? YES. NEAREST TO FAR AWAY

You might want to start a thread asking if there's anyone in your area interested in doing rides together. A couple of people from Ohio did that just today. You never know what kind of response you're going to get. Good luck.

Thanks. I think something like this could work in our sparsely-populated areas of the intermountain west. I like your observations about the people dynamics, too. Something to keep in mind.

Some good ideas here. Thanks. It seems the less structured organizationally the group or club is, the more successful it can be. With the caveat it probably takes a handful of dedicated people committed to doing the work necessary to initiate and organize the events.

Spyder Club

My wife and both belong to the Spyder Ryders of America, Columbia River Chapter. I think we have around a 100 members, I am not retired yet and work full time so we don't participate in many of the functions, but the ones we attended are well organized. We ride 100 miles to make the monthly breakfast when we can then usually go for a day ride with some of the group. It has given us a chance to make some new great friends and have taken some week long rides with some of them. I think the age group is what has appealed to me the most as most of us have mellowed and the need for speed is not like it was 40 years ago.

That's a good point. Thanks.

Just FYI i got a reply from the listed Road Captain, saying the the club was ended because of lack of participation...Then I received another reply with a link for forms if I wanted to start a new club- I do not...

Thanks for letting me know. I contacted the national office and they told me they are working on finding a new President, hoping to keep the club in operation.

I belong to Rider Motorcycle Touring Club Pocono Mountain Chapter. All bikes are welcome even scooter if you can keep up. We ride Wednesday and Sunday. It's a nice club.
