• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

There is a motorsports dealer about 30 miles from me that are selling, and I'm assuming servicing, Spyders. Have to watch that "assuming" though. Just not sure what all their "Can Am" capabilities are at the moment. I need to call and ask, just in case.

That would be a good idea to ask them.

I'm not sure, I'm just assuming Deanna was talking about anyone in general, that's why I responded in the manner I did. This Spyder world is so new to me right now that I'm not sure what's legal and what's not. Thank goodness for this forum and it's guidance .
Still so much to learn about these dealers, their "cans and can'ts", and their "do's and don'ts". Its like Spyder Course 101 at it's finest! Still so much to learn. But having fun as I go! :2thumbs:

Biorick, Yes, I did mean anyone in general.

I have done the module twice.

Put the antenna on and still have to finish putting everything back together.

Wow, that really sucks! Sorry to hear that. Since you have had to replace 2 Modules, I can see how Mike's advice for relocating the module would definitely be of a great advantage for ease of access. OR, as others suggested, just have it disabled.

How many have really been stranded??

When mine acted up I just keyed it off and back on and it cleared the message. What is weird it always seemed to be when I was getting gas.

Anyway mine was hit and miss so I went with what the bulletin said.

Relocating will work but you will have to re - route wires and remove the frunk.

:agree: ... but let me ad, my fix involved NO Wire cutting .... the OEM wire harness ( for the DESS module itself ) is long enough to move it under the right headlight. you will have to clip the wire ties to get it to stretch that far though..... good luck ... Mike

Go to my Bio page and then to my Albums.https://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/album.php?albumid=4936 I have pics of the DESS module where it was and where I moved it to. From what I've learnt from others and myself, the module rarely fails completely on the first incident; it seems to be a progressive thing. But once it happens you need to take action ASAP.

The most difficult thing about removing the Frunk (lots of videos on it) is re-connecting the rubber elbow for the air intake. Go to cheapcycleparts.com & look at the Fiche'; it will show you all the parts and how they line up. None of the bolts you remove are actually "weight bearing"; what carries the weight are the metal hangers attached to the front upper frame. The frunk has reliefs that go on those two hangers. The upper two middle 10mm bolts don't have to be replaced; what the 10mm bolts do is to prevent any frunk movement that will allow it to come off the hangers so they aren't really stressed at all. I wouldn't bother getting upset if you can't re-attach that elbow. It doesn't have to be AIR TIGHT and it's not likely to get any water into it if it isn't. I removed the entire plastic Air intake and have a 3in. pipe into my airbox (as seen in another album https://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/album.php?albumid=4749)

If you have time, move the DESS module like I did because if it craps out it will only take you 10 min to fix if you have another module. The mega-tech BUDS license is not cheap.

Mike, thanks for this. What I understand you to be saying is to relocate the DESS module while in the garage. So that, if it craps out on the road, and IF you have a spare DESS module, you can easily replace it without tearing into the machine. I get that. But, doesn't that then require resetting the DESS with BUDS?

Good question .... When I re-located it ... it was the new one , and it was working. ... I was there when the BRP Tech's fixed mine. After they re-placed the DESS they just started it up .... As I re-call they didn't connect it to the BUDS computer first .... Maybe Billy Bovine or Snowbelt Spyder could answer that ??? .... Mike

trikemutha,

I was not stranded when I had the D.E.S.S error( it happened twice for me).

The first time when it happened I was able to start the bike, turned key on/and off, took the key with me and walked and waited about 1/2 hour, then the bike started.

Then I called the dealership and that is how it all started. Then I started this thread ( in 8/13/2015).

About all, if not the only thing, that DESS does is reads the code from the key and sends it to the Body Control Module (I think) which then compares the code with the stored OK codes list. If a match is found the BCM tells the ECM it's OK to start the engine.

Just remember that for many of us replacing the module multiple times with BRP's latest and greatest module...NEVER FIXED THE PROBLEM...TURNING OFF THE DESS SYSTEM DID...larryd

Also for those that owns a 2013 and older. You can’t disable the DESS.
