• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

The Spyder does not care if the screen displays or does not display from an overheated condition. The reason it may not have started is because the mode button was not pressed which will prevent a start. With no instructions visible to press the mode button, only experience or luck playing with the machine could get it fired up.

I doubt anyone thinks your existence here is all about the DESS. Don't limit yourself.

On a RT you can pull your safety card down over the screen, I don't know about other models

Thank you for your contribution to this issue ..................however if you do have a DESS failure ..............Doing the card thing won't fix the problem...................................But your thoughts are appreciated :thumbup::thumbup: ...................Mike :bbq:

I tried to start it and again a blankscreen. I'm supposed to take it in tomorrow for frunk leak but I may have to have it towed there because I can't start it. :banghead:

I have done the cycling thing (5 times on then off) on each of the eight failures my bike has experienced. It worked first time and every time except one. That time it took a bit longer but, it did work. My dealer is replacing the DESS module next week. I hope to have the issue resolved with the new parts.
Good Luck! Please post the new part #'s. Deanna

Let us know what your dealer says about the "Blank screen". Good luck! Deanna

Looks like the stuff needed to disable the DESS is available. I'm going to see if I can find out just how involved it is. If it's not stupid I may spring for it.

Megatech License Features:

  • Changing the VIN and MODEL numbers (is useful for ECU replacing).
  • Advanced settings.
  • View stories in hours, rather than percentage.
  • Enabling/Disabling DESS (start vehicle with any key). Except Roadster Spyder.

What is it you are trying say here? I have already verified that a Megatech licence version of BUDS can indeed disable DESS on a 2014 and newer RT or F3 allowing a non-chipped key to start the bike. I purchased the licence upgrade for our shop.

I can also now verify that this does NOT work on 2013 and older bikes but they do not seem to have the problems either.

Brought the bike in, i was able to get it started by turning the key on and off about 30 times. once i got it running headed down to the dealer. when i got there i shut her down and went to get the tech. sure enough it wouldn't start for him. He saw the blank screen and said he things the entire unit is going bad. I asked about the DESS and he said it was not that because i would never get it started. When i hear more I'll keep everyone posted. Thank you for your opinions, I'm learning a lot about Can AM's.

Which "'entire unit is going bad?

Thanks for the update!
Looking forward to hearing more about " the blank screen" and what your tech says.

Is there a summary of DESS/Ignition Switch part numbers that have been installed, failed again, then installed again? I have a case open with BRP now and want to make sure I'm having an intelligent conversation with my dealer.

Hi, The Tech was correct - if He meant - the Spyder was in FULL DESS FAILURE ....Orange screen & KEY icon showing ....from your description I don't think you have/had a DESS failure ................With DESS failure we have been told to MOVE the Spyder away from it's location if possible ......remove key about 5 feet from switch ...wait a minute ......insert key and turn it on- off 5 x's rapidly .....sometimes this will get the Spyder past the DESS issue.......ir did with Me at SPYDERFEST 2016 .....I then had the latest version of the DESS MODULE installed........2 mos. later , I got a KEY flash but NO DESS failure ......so my fingers are crossed..............Please let us know what your issue was........good luck ...Mike

When I got my first DESS error ( on July 14,2015) the dealership installed the first D.E.S.S module( part # 710004190) that failed.

Then on Aug. 28,th 2015 I had the 2nd D.E.S.S. module installed( part # 710004190) with the Ignition Switch ( part # 710004413). Good Luck!

So far it seems to working, I have not had the D.E.S.S. error show up.
 Keep us posted!

EDIT: Apparently my short-term memory is going faster than I thought. It is the 4916 they're ordering; not 4190.

4916 is the part number they're trying to order; so far it's still on a slow boat from Canada. BRP's TSB (apparently there is one) doesn't include the ignition switch.

Thanks Deanna

I got the latest D.E.S.S. installed today. (the second replacement for this bike) The part was ordered by my dealer somewhere around June 20th. It was at my dealers within a few days. So far, it has started the bike about 15 times and all is well. I also had a new VeeRubber Touring tire installed on the rear of my bike. Balanced with little weight and it seems to be good so far.:pray::pray:

Just so you are aware, that is not the latest version of the DESS Module....the last version is part # ( NOW CORRECTED) # 710004916......:dontknow:......Mike

Thanks to everyone on the part number heads-up. I wrote it down but was going by memory when I replied to Deanna. The correct part number is 4916.

Roger,
Don't forget:
The memory is the second thing to go.

I've forgotten what the first one was! :yikes:

Mike if that is the part number DESS module installed in your Spyder by a team technician, you do not appear to have a correct part.

Read post #521 and study the chart, those are the valid part numbers as of today and yours is not listed.

There is no part number 710004961. Posting an incorrect part number on the career topic will mess up others that follow this like gospel.:yikes::yikes::gaah::gaah::2thumbs::2thumbs:

OK now I am confused

Part#710004961 is not the correct number?? or was the 4190 the incorrect part # and the new superseded # is710004961

Just trying to clarify

Part Number 710004961 is not a valid part number.

Part Number 710004190 is superseded.

The correct current available DESS Module is Part Number 710004916. Mikes simple typo mistake may seem small, but for a person asking the dealer to install that part makes a person seem foolish to request it. Accuracy counts when it comes to ordering or dealing with a service writer.

I apologize for my TYPO, I was in a rush this am to get to the dentist ( no excuse ) and transposed the last two numbers :banghead::banghead::banghead: ....The correct Module is # 710004916 ........Mike
