DESS Key code again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

8 days from Quebec to Las Vegas seems acceptable.
Beside the only thing that comes and goes quickly to Las Vegas is MONEY! :p

Thanks for the info on the key, but that kind of bothers me.
If the same key is used with a new ignition switch , then that says to me ALL Spyder RTs a Keyed alike and only the DESS module chip is different????
Confused.
And if they only reprogram the key and the teeth are the same why do you need a new trailer lock?
More confused.

Obviously I'm missing something or can't see the forest for the trees :)

Thank Deanna

AJ, To me 8 days from Quebec to Las Vegas works for you, if I had to wait 8 days( Quebec to Derby Line, Vermont, my dealership is there) I would not be happy.

My dealership had to reprogram the key to the new switch ( that was done in Aug. 2015) so it would work with new switch that they installed. Also, my dealership changed the look of my 2 keys to match the new switch.
Does that help?

Deanna

New DEES and Ignition Switch Installed.
Part numbers were as you previously posted.

One Correction.

When they install a NEW ignition switch, the switch comes with two NEW keys and a new Trailer Lock.
These keys are "programed" to the new DESS and the OLD Keys, Ignition Switch & DESS are sent back to BRP.

If a new DESS module is installed WITHOUT an ignition switch, then the OLD keys need to be preprogramed.

So now we wait and see if we ever get another error :D

The final bill was $720.00 with Labor. One would think BRP would want to solve the problem but maybe a eating the repair is cheaper then redesign ;)

AJ, That is good to know that you got the New D.E.S.S. and Ignition Switch installed, with the part #'s that I previously posted on this thread.

When I got my ( 2nd D.E.S.S module, and Ignition switch installed) I did not get a new set of keys, but I did get a new trailer lock. Also, I still have my Original keys, they ( dealership changed the shape of my keys to match the new the Ignition switch).

I hope that you do not get the D.E.S.S. error.

The D.E.S.S. module/and Ignition Switch is UNDER WARRANTY. I hope you did not pay the $ 720.( final bill). I see that you have a 2014 spyder.

If you do get the D.E.S.S. error or need to have the D.E.S.S. module/or ignition switch replaced again. Please post on this thread, BRP needs to get a grip on this. Deanna

Of course I did not pay, that was what it cost BRP ;)

BTW - considering where the DESS module is located, I am no longer buying BRPs statement that it is "saturating" the key.
If anything, the cause is a signal that is too weak. But with 40 years working with RF what do I know :p

Left stranded DESS error - again. Lucky for me my trailer and motorhome was at a campground 5 miles from where I was stranded. Hitched a ride back to camper then took to my dealer another 20 mile. This is the 4th time same issue. Last time they just cut new key. Still under warranty :opps:

You need to have them open a case with BRP.
Change that.
You need to DEMAND they open a case with BRP.

BRP won't argue they will replace BOTH the DESS module AND your IGNITION.
It takes BRP up to 10 days to respond to dealer and then the ship time.

Job takes dealer 2.1 hours (at least that's what they charge BRP).

The part numbers for a 2014 are DESS = 710004190 / Ignition = 710004413

Thanks I'm going to do just that. 2014 R-t-S
Do not back down at your dealership. Their is a lot of excellent info. on this thread/with pictures to go to your dealership with.

Be sure your dealership has the parts ( D.E.S.S. module, and the Ignition switch parts at your dealership) before you leave your spyder. Get a copy of your work order, and A CASE # for future references.

Good Luck! Keep us posted please!

I did take a pic of the orange screen as soon as It happened. I will let you folks know what dealer has to say.

Looking forward to hearing what the dealer has to say.

Don't forget that this thread has some excellent info to take to your dealership with. Good Luck! Deanna

Had the dess error pop up once over the weekend after my dealer had reprogrammed the keys. Headed to spyderfest wednesday. I have an appointment to have the sway bar installed and will ask pitbull to look at the dess error. I had my dealer open a case number with brp when they reprogrammed the keys.

Thanks for letting us know. Keep us updated on what Pitbull says about the dess error. Deanna

Reprogramming your keys IS NOT a fix for this problem.
There is only ONE FIX and that's to replace both the DESS module and the Ignition, anything else is a TEMPORARY workaround at best.

BRP knows this - seems like your dealer does not.
If they open a case, BRP will send your dealer the appropriate parts to fix.

Get your dealership to replace the DESS module, and the ignition switch, both are covered under warranty.

I had the DESS Module replaced twice( on July, 2015, Aug. 2015) the ignition switch replaced once, and my dealership reprogrammed keys, gave me a new trailer lock. My dealership did open up a case with BRP, and they fixed it. Deanna

I got the dess code again on mine this morning. I thought I had the issue taken care of but I guess not. this is very maddening. I have had the switch replaced already. I am considering a harley trike

I bet those are trouble free, right! Might want to search Tri-Glide Problems first. Here is a question from a tech.

Hey tri-gliders!

I was just wondering what you guys are seeing with problems on these models.
I service 3 of these and all have some sort of issues.
So far i have seen:
Steering Damper leaking
3 oil cooler mounts getting loose
all 3 had the transmission trap door bolts loosen up and the exhaust mount bolts fall out.
Left side mufflers hang down a slight bit more than the right side
Shift arm on transmission loosening up
all 3 needed rear rotors/pads at 4k-8k miles.
starter was loose
exhaust bracket at rear of trans case bolts falling out
parking brakes not working
reverse assembly loosening up

IMHO everything that has wheels and a motor will have problems of some kind, and the more computerized they get, the more issues they will have.

If you get the D.E.S.S again, take a picture, ( show the picture to your dealership) the D.E.S.S. Module is UNDER WARRANTY, and have your dealership open up a case with BRP, and be sure that your dealership has the D.E.S.S module, ( so you are not spyderless) and also, have your dealership replace the Ignition Switch which is UNDER WARRANTY also, have your dealership reprogram keys, and get a new trailer lock from your dealership.

The part # for the 2014 RSS is: 710004190.

I got the following info. ("Solution: Replace the D.E.S.S. module. Program the keys using B.U.D.S. NOTE: If after the replacement of the D.E.S.S. Module the problem reoccurs, update the previously opened BOSS Web Case and report this situation) from my dealership.

Also, try "Turn on/off immediately and DO NOT LET YOUR SYSTEM SHUT DOWN for 4 to 5 cycles. Also, I got this from an email from a BRP TECH " We have had cases where a cell phone or magnetic card, placed near the ignition switch cause this. This includes any device that may emit some type of frequency".

Where do you carry your spare key?
Keep us posted!

Please post on this thread, so new/and current spyder owners now.
I will check this thread, when I get a chance, ( I am still in the work force). I hope the above info helps.

Deanna

I will definitely take a picture this time. We bought the Spyder brand new in March. It had been sitting on the lot for a while. Warranty coverage started in March.

The problem actually just started when I carried both keys to Spyderfest (figured it was better to have both on me, in different locations, then to have one of them 250 miles away). I think I may have caused the issue by confusing the DESS module with both keys. Going to put one back in the house and see if it comes back.

Thanks for all the research and part numbers. It will help if I have to take it back to the dealer. This dealer only does a few Spyders and mostly does crotch rockets.

This taking pictures thing is TOTAL B.S. ...IMHO..... Anything that occurs to/on/with your Spyder that has anything to do with the COMPUTER system is LOGGED IN "FOREVER" even if the Techs "clear" it ...... IT IS STILL THERE ...... any good Computer Hacker can find and retrieve ALL the so called "cleared codes"....... In Law Enforcement I've talked to Forensic Computer Retrieval Experts, and I don't think they lied to me when they said "if it's in there we can get it out"............. Remember "Apple" is still trying to find out How the FBI got a computer Hacker to break APPLE's code!!!!!!! ............. So if a dealer tells you "IT'S NOT IN THERE" - They are flat out LYING to you OR are in-competent ................ KNOWLEDGE IS POWER, My friend ...... Mike
