There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Dealers in NY

Hello Everyone,

Do any of you know of a dealer in NY that will allow a potential buyer to try a spyder with only a permit (short ride). The dealer local to me will not allow rides without a full motorcycle license. I am finding it very hard to make an informed decision without actually trying one. Sitting on one making vroom vroom noises, while fun is not helping. Any help would be appreciated.

As long as someone with a MC license is within a quarter mile of the permit holder it is legal. A dealer in my area leads or follows on all test rides.

From NY State DMV:
*you must be under the general supervision of a driver who is 21 years or age or older and has a valid motorcycle license from NYS or another state
*the motorcycle driver who supervises you must remain within 1/4 mile of you at all times

But as Raknid says it is probably an insurance issue.

Does the dealership keep spare personnel around to send out with permit-holders?
If you don't have a license; how much road experience do you have?
How much is a dealership willing to risk in such a situation?

In the "Perfect World"; they'd be able to go out with you, and take you on some sort of pre-selected route...

I know previously Dougs Powersports in Cortland NY would allow you to ride in his parking lot but not sure if that is still the same. I would recommend you go and get your motorcycle permit first....

I agree. Bill or another person always used to take a potential buyer out on a pre-determined route. Don't know about with only a permit. Call & talk to him as previously stated. They are also a great dealership.

Move to Ontario

Bob,
I don't know if they would let a "permit only rider" take a test drive. I was only pointing out their "escort policy" on all test rides.

Generally they schedule test drives in advance so that sales personnel are available for the potential customer.

My wife and a few others are taking a riding course to get her M2(m) license. The BRP spyder course is offered at a local college and is designed to get an M2 motorcycle license, with a restriction that you can only drive a trike or motorcycle with a side car attached. Since Ontario has graduated drivers license . At the end of the course you will have a M2(m). You will still need to take another course and pass to get your full motorcycle license but since you used your spyder your motorcycle license will be restricted to trikes and motorcycles with sidecars attached and that is where the bracket little m comes into play. BRP will pay for getting your M2(m) licenece only if you buy a spyder with in a certain time period but it is up to you to get your full M(m).

The province of Quebec(home of BRP) has the best deal as you only need to take an 8hour training course and pass the test and you have your full trike licence.

The solution here seems to be to get someone with the proper license to take you for a ride on the test :spyder2:. I would think that most dealers would jump at the prospect of selling another :ani29:. If that fails, that's what friends are for.
