Dealer setup and freight

I have seen older threads on this subject, but would like to know what seems to be current.

Dealer in Florida is advertising NO set up or freight and only $99 doc fee.
Also discount new 2010's

Sadly I live in CA. and the Hayward dealer is charging $1400-$1800 set up and freight. plus very little discount on 09's and none on 10.

No kidding. That is why I am looking elsewhere.

Perhaps your dealer has a magic fairy that delivers his Spyders but trust me , they pay a full ride on freight , that is not something that they get for free. So a dealer that charges it is merely recouping his money , and the dealer that doesn't is just burying it in his profit elsewhere. Guys , its left pocket right pocket. Around here theres a few that discount the Rt's to death and then charge freight , then theres a couple dealers that dont discount heavily and throw in the freight. guess what , the end result is the out the door price is almost the same. In my opinion , who cares if I pay freight or setup , what I want is a fair price comparable to other dealers out th door price AS LONG AS I am dealing with a dealer that is =an expert on Spyders and has a service department to back it up. Several forum members have travelled out of state to save a few hundred and then are left knocking on the doors of the local dealers that invest in their service and parts business for their customers , asking for warranty assistance. Drives me nuts. :spyder:

Try speedsports in livermore or the other dealersip in Lodi, I stayed away from eastbay motorsports after they wanted to run my credit just to test ride the spyder... real shady sales guy...

Additional Costs

I have 2 experiences to share.
I bought my RTS unit from a Dealer in WV at full price. Was told that if BRP finds any dealer discounting New Units, they could have their License pulled :lecturef_smilie:(no clue if thats true) so he couldn't offer any discounts on actual units, but everything else was free game & up to the individual dealer. Here's my breakdown for the RTS as of my purchase date of May 26 2010.
Unit $26,499.
Doc Fee $50.
Tax $1,593.
Title Fee $9.
Lien Fee $5.
License Fee $21.
Temp Plate $5.
I wasn't charged any freight, dealer prep/set up or anything else. Not to mention, he threw in a free Helmet, Jacket and Hitch Kit as well:2thumbs:

Now, my local dealer in KY is a different story. I purchased the RT-622 trailer from them, & they like to pad their pockets a little more. The break down is as follows & this was just yesterday June 26 2010.
RT-622 $3999.
Freight $175.
Tax $254.
Doc Fee $55.

I'm sure that if I purchased my actual RTS from my local dealer, they would have added all the extras that they could. For this reason, along with poor customer service, I will not be using this dealer anymore. A friend from on here suggested another location only about 45 minutes from where I live & all communications with them have given me good feelings that they will be more than happy to take care of my future servicing needs & earn my business.

Hope this helps, shopping around may get you a better deal, but be sure to find a good servicing dealer as your future enjoyment with your Spyder heavily depends on it

I always thought that the manufacturer (BRP, Ford, or whatever) reimbursed the dealer for the warranty work? Of course I could be wrong :dontknow:

That is where I am going to take a test ride, but they have been out of demo bikes and don't let you ride a new one.

No idea about the OTD cost there. Would have to be close to $20k for a 2010 at Eastbay Motorsports. Maybe $1000-1500 less for an 09.

Dealers are reimbursed for warranty work, but at the rate that BRP expects that the work should be done. If they have an item listed as 2 hours and it takes the dealer 3 hours for whatever reason, they just ate an hour. At least that is how I understand it. I know there are some dealers on this site and they can correct me if I am wrong.

Deb , you are absolutely correct.

there is NO TRUTH in the statement about getting caught discounting a product by BRP. A) it is illegal and B) BRP makes the same profit regardless. The RTS has a dealer cost of just under 23k. The 622 is a 3500 dollar dealer cost Item. If I'm a dealer and I'm going to have to bring in an RTS , floorplan it (ie: finance it for 6-7 months through my bank), set it up , and then deal with whatever idiosyncrasy it (or the customer :yikes:) may have, I'm thinking
I better be making 2500 or 3000.

Dude, sorry you had that experience with East Bay Motorcycles. I bought my 2010 RS-S there and I thought I got a pretty fair deal. Of course this was Memorial Day week-end, they were pricing stuff to move, I knew exactly what I wanted, AND I scheduled everything in advance. I had a few hassles during the process and I got up to leave a couple of times when they tried to change terms but I had everything in writing so they made good on it.

Of course, now the problems are setting in, so we'll see how the service dept. does. They did well on the 600 mile service, but this is different. I'll keep you posted. I have also talked to the guys in Livermore, and I get a good vibe from them. It's good to have an alternantive...

What problems on a 2010?

Speedsports in Livermore does a buyer some favors (still need to know bottom line).

They give buyers a discount on shop rate.
They bump you to the head of the line, unless other buyers (theirs) are in line.
And according to the guy I talked to, on some service you can schedual nd wait for it to be done.

Wonder if all that is true once they sold you a spyder?

Well, the first one was the no- start issue. I went to go for a ride 2 days after I bought it and it just wouldn't start. No turn-over, no click, nothing. But I called the owner and he sent a guy over who actually fixed it. Seems I shut the engine down in gear and the SE5s do not like this.

Then the clutch recall. I am waiting for the part to come in. But this is a BRP issue and not a dealer problem. The part is finally in and I am scheduled to have that replaced soon.

Then on Friday I stopped for gas. First it wouldn't start again, so I had to mess with it again to get it to start. It did, but now the :cus: CHECK DPS alarm went off. Now I have to call the dealer again and tell them of the new problem. Again, a BRP issue, not the fault of the dealer. I just wonder how the dealer is going to handle it. All of these problems are starting to make me wonder about this thing now...

Widowmaker2011 is spot on ... I will add... If we remove the profits away from the dealer. Where will we go when they close? If one dealer wants to eat the freight, oh well. If another wants to "Split" it or hand it all of to the customer, so be it.

Seeing that this is the first year for these bikes, and they are hard to keep on a lot of dealer floors, the dealers have more wiggle room than say if it was three years from now and the market has calmed down, and the "I must be first" folks have made their purchases. Now a dealer will advertise lower prices per the contract guidelines, and those dealers that may have at one time eaten those freight charges no longer will.

In the end every dealer must make a profit. There is not much in the $6000 crotch rockets or $7500 ATV's...

That said. You as a consumer have the right to do exactly as you are. I would not hesitate for a second in your situation to shop around. Heck, you might even go right back to them and make your purchase! The grass may be greener, but the fertilizer they put on it may stink more :roflblack:

Even my wife and I have a simple way to shop... If we feel sales pressure, the price we are willing to pay drops fast. If we are being helped, felt to be an important part of their business... Then we are willing to spend more because we "Want" to pay for this kind of service.

Good luck in your search !!! :spyder2:

I agree with most of what is being discussed. However I still wonder about excessive charges for freight and set up.

I thought one I saw on Ebay (San Diego) was high at $695 until I saw Haywards prices. The San Diego dealer is offer a 2009 or $13000, but he is keeping the $1000 from BRP.

Livermore doesn't have the prices on the bikes.

I am opened to a quality used on if still under warranty, but have been unable to find on close enough.

Found a 2008 with only 50 miles but no warranty, and with the problems Raptor is having, I wouldn't buy without a warranty.

It's True!!:2thumbs: We purchased our new 2010 RS-S at Central Florida Powersports June 3rd. We got a discount off suggested MSRP and paid a $99 Dealer fee + tax. We live in North Ga and got it while on vacation saving $1300 out the door as compared to what a local Dealer would offer. I even gave the local Dealer a second chance and told them what the Dealer in Fla was selling it for, they replied "that's Good" :yikes:
Guess they didn't think I would go to Fla.:shemademe_smilie::roflblack::ohyea::spyder2:

I think that is a smart move man. But do not let my issues deter you from buying. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would still buy the Spyder. These things can be a bit eccentric (the electronics are touchy), but overall it's a blast to ride. And for people like me (unable to ride 2 wheelers because of physical constraint, so my Dr. says) it was the answer to my prayers. It got me back in the wind. I might just do what I want some day and get that 2-wheeler, but for now I am stoked about having what I have. Thank Goddness for the warranty though! :D

BTW, I resolved the DPS issue. I did what Scotty said to do (remove &reseat relays and fuses) and the alarm went away. Whew! One problem down! The clutch will get done on Wednesday, and I SHOULD be good to go after that. THANK YOU SCOTTY!! You are the man!

Glad to hear you almost back in the saddle. I am just to old to start ride a 2 wheeler again after all these years.

Maybe with any luck I will soon be a Sypder Rider.
