Day 2 experience/observations. - Questions

So today was my official 2nd day with my Spyder.

60 miles since pickup... I know some of you would already have had 200 on it, but I have this job that is paying for said Spyder...

I washed it today, dried her off, and waxed the hood and fenders for now to help with the bugs... will wax the rest of it this weekend.

Filled up for the first time. Took 2.2 gallons, though I'm not sure just how full it was from dealer. Checked oil - perfect.

Biggest observation so far... This thing throws some serious heat. Yeah, I'm getting the right foot cooked (08 model). I'm not a complainer, so I can live with it.

But the side of this thing gets freaking hot. My normal riding posture so far has my legs resting/squeezed in on the sides... and my legs were baking at times.

So...

Does anyone notice a big difference in the 09 with the heat shield BRP added? Did anyone have it added to their 08 and how did it compare? Does the heat shield cause the Spyder to run hotter vs venting the heat properly?

Is there an aftermarket add on for the sides? I think I saw a BRP gizmo that protects the sides, but might also insulate a leg against the heat better?

Guys and gals... I'm loving this thing so far. It is beyond cool. Finally getting wife new helmet tomorrow, and we'll be putting some miles on it.

I'm probably going to order one of the F1 Windshields. Seems about right for a 6' 2" rider. I'm thinking that the adjustable F1 will allow me to rig a decent GPS mount by potential latching on to the adjustment hardware of the windshield. Any thoughts?

I think you'll find most of the heat coming from under the cover where the pipes are - not from the muffler itself - which is where the BRP 'heat shield' goes - it was really done to cover up the burnt paint spot in my opinion.

I would really think twice before getting the F1 slider. While I know many are happy with the F1 shields and Marcel - he just does not run a good business, or make quality products in my opinion. He's not computerized, can't track orders, doesn't know who ordered what - and runs your charge card through some sign company in Arizona.

That aside, people of your height have been very pleased with the CHAD system. I've never heard a single complaint from a CHAD owner.

Get ready for plenty of fun on your Spyder!

The right side does get hot. We ended up adjusting our riding positions to compensate during the summer. It was comforting during the cold weather. I was not aware that BRP had taken any further measures with the 2009s to mitigate the heat. I'd be interested in more details, pics, part numbers.

From what I have seen of the FI Slider, the adusting hardware is mounted quite high. It may not offer the mounting capability you seek, or the GPS may interfere with adjustment. I added a RAM mount to the adjuster on my CHAD, just above the console, and it works very well. You can see the details under my post in the My Mods section, or in my picture album. It works very well.

After using an F1 slider for about 6 months, I'd agree with Scotty. I'm not sure if the slider hardware is conducive to mounting a GPS but "where there's a will, there's a way". You might be able to figure something out. As a windshield, the F1 slider works very well.

You don't need to wax your plastic but it doesn't mean it isn't fun to do so...I use products that are more like a 'quick wax'.

The best product on the market is Geoff Bodine's Waxing Frenzy(liquid)...higher quality carnuba that withstands higher heat than other brands...I buy the same product that doesn't have his name on it...you'll see it used for a lot of boating products...if it works well in salt water, it's fine for my Spyder...

Read about the product and you'll see why it's better...don't take my word on it. I will say that when I wax my cars with it, it holds far longer than any other product I've ever used...this includes Zymol, Mother's, etc...Waxing Frenzy is really amazing...

Yep I know what you mean about the heat. Was hot last weekend ryding so I didn't wear my normal mc boots. Instead I wore my Converse Hightops (with rhinestones I might add) and it felt like my right foots was melting.

Nope... Talking about the right foot heat... as well the heat off the right side body of the bike, and to a degree the left side. No issue with the exhaust.

I don't think so. On the one hand, you have the right foot heat with is due to the heat flowing from the radiator. The engine coolant is going to run the same basic temps regardless of exhaust pipe. :dontknow:

As for a more free flowing exhaust...Exhaust temps are probably in the same ball park regardless, and if a more free flowing exhaust had some effect I think the added horsepower boost/output from said pipe would actually counter that with higher volume of exhaust gases due to the engine breathing more. :dontknow:

I can tolerate the heat to a point... It's not that big a deal. I don't like the rumor of burned paint.... Though that would be an excuse to paint the bike grabber blue...

I never even noticed either way...all I know is that the hindle makes the bike more responsive...definitely seems to accelerate faster...I think it might have helped the mileage a bit too...
