Dave & Teds Most Excellent Adventures 2013

The thing I most look forward to on Spyderlovers is the updates to "Dave & Teds Most Excellent Adventures 2013" Ted is one incredible companion and Dave is an excellent story teller. I hope to have my own Spyder by Spyderfest 2014 and look forward to meeting the two of you then.

Dave when you get a few days off and can travel down to Cherokee area or deals gap you need to send me a PM. I will be in robbinsville area from july 1st till the 7th. My wife and I enjoyed having you and teddy as house guest at the owners event. Teddy was a blast. I always get a large cabin when I head up that way so im sure we have room for yall. Just let me know.

Sent from my Galaxy S3. I may have made a spelling error or may have some grammer issues. My fingers are way to big to type on this tiny screen!

so how are you two doing today?

better I hope

My vertigo and Parkinsons kicked in yesterday so its been fun bouncing off the walls and furtniture

dont let things get you down - just take care of yourself and Teddy and the rest of the world will deal with itself.... for better or worse.... lol

Brain Dead

I've started this post at least 6X now, only to just sit here blankly looking at the monitor til the laser or one of the other machines red lights, then I just exit & get on with work. Every time I try to start thinking about picking up our Adventure to SpyderFest 2013 my mind gets into a tizzy with everything I'm trying to jugle right now. We have so much to do and it seems every day, more is added to the pile, til the pile is so large it seems overwhelming. I know the logical thing is take one thing at a time, baby steps and eventually we'll get everything done. But sometimes, trying to figure out the priority to put things into, just in itself can be mind boggling.

Safety comes first and even tho I've made changes to Teddy's set-up, I don't have the confidence in it that I used to. I mean, before, we had tested it many times, always with the same result, he just hung on top of or next to the saddle bag, and never once did his adjustment strap release like it did in his real-world emergency. I thought I had forgiven myself for this, but maybe I haven't, I don't know. I thought it was behind me, but I went & got my hair cut on my lunch break, and I awlays have the same stylist (Great Clips:rolleyes:) and she always asks about Teddy and our adventures and to see his latest pics, but when I was retelling it, all I could think of was the look in Teddy's eyes, when I realized what had happened and I looked in the mirror and saw him wide eyed and panicky. Just to think of it makes me nauseous.

I've got his passenger area tore apart right now, awaiting a couple of parts that I had to order on-line to hopefully make his compartment area safer along with adding protention for him when we're caught ryding in the rain.

Baby steps...... I know ...... I'm trying

Take One Thing at a Time

Dave ... yes, baby steps -- one thing at a time and you WILL get there. Sort of know how you feel ... got notice of a "resource action" (fancy word for layoff) and my last day of employment is July 12th. :yikes::cus::cus: Fortunately, I SORT OF saw this coming and was SOMEWHAT prepared (financially). I also have enough years to retire with full pension, so I'm pretty lucky there. It also gives me more ryde time with spydercowboy .... YAY!

HOWEVER, trying to make decisions about retirement benefits, how to continue medical coverage, if I should look for work, and so on .... all the while working on closing out my job (transfer of responsibilities) has me feeling like I'm "chasing my tail" (sorry for the doggy metaphor)!
It's all a bit stressful, even if I don't really want to admit it ..... lots of "stuff" to do and not much time left to contain it all.

So, like you ... one thing at a time and it will all get done. :D Maybe I have a bad attitude, but after July12th, what does or doesn't get done at work IS NOT MY PROBLEM! :sour:

Best Regards .... Ann

Dave & Teddy

I bet if Teddy could talk to you, he would have already told you that "ALL IS FORGIVEN". He's ready to ride!!! I'm sure you will fix his area to where it won't happen again. Life is experimenting with you pal. I have faith that it will all come together and you and Teddy will be just fine. :D

cant' eat the whole elephant

Sometimes when I'm feeling overwhelmed, I have to just stop and remember that you can't eat an elephant all at once. It requires a plan. Get out a piece of paper and put those thoughts / duties / etc down and get them out of your head rotation. I call that Step 1 - get the elephant into the pen. Then prioritize what is important to YOU. That's Step 2 - decided which end to bite first. And then put your plan in action, without letting others lead you astray from your objective. That's Step 3 - Get on with it!

When all else fails - just pray. God will never give you more to deal with than he give you the tools to handle.

Sorry for the repost, but I think this is Important Enough that ALL RT owners see it

Did my own totally unscientific test & you may be shocked at my findings***I WAS***
Ok, here's a quick update on our own personal situation concerning our broken Center Dog-Bone shaped Windshield Support. Our 1st one that broke a while back was replaced under warranty, but since its a complete unit, meaning the support is built into the motor housing, the entire assembly has to be replaced, at a rough cost around $450 :yikes: Sad thing is, it was replaced by the same exact part, as BRP has not made any changes to this cast center support. Our 2nd support broke soon after returning from this years SpyderFest, which honestly, since it was replaced with the same exact part, wasn't a big surprisenojoke The shop manager got BRP to cover it under our now Extended Warranty minus the $50 deductable, which honestly, I think is unacceptable, but I wasn't pushing it, and was just happy that he was able to get it covered, seeing (as mentioned here in this very thread) I'm sure they could've denied it if they wanted, seeing as we do have an after-market shield on:lecturef_smilie: All that being said, I'm still sad, and even more FRUSTRATED to report, they still have made no changes to this cast center support, and once again, have replaced it with the same exact part :lecturef_smilie: I really don't get their logic on this:lecturef_smilie:

Not wanting to go thru this again, I went ahead and got with the shops parts guy and ordered all of the upgraded 2013 windshield support bolts (hardware) that they have changed to. On 2010-2011 RTs, the adjustable windshield is held, on all three supports, using a solid bolt with a circlip at one end, loosely holding it in place:sour:

That was changed for the 2012 model year RTs and now all three support brackets come with hollow threaded bolts that a screw goes into on one side, along with a little plastic sleeve about a 1/4 inch long that goes on each side to keep metal from rubbing on metal.

This :bowdown:New & Improved  set-up does take most, if not all, jiggle/shimmy/slop/etc.... out of the shield  My total cost for the 3 bolts, screws and sleeves was right over $40. Personally, I think BRP should retro-fit ALL PREVIOUS MODEL YEAR RTs with this new set-up, as it would make more of us happy by reducing the vibration and slop that many have dealt with, and even reported here, and ultimately save BRP alot of money in the long run if it helps to reduce the stress on the center support, causing less failures

:shocked:Ok, all the above pertains to me personally, but this next fact just may get your attention

DISCLOSURE***Let me first say, I'm not a mechanic, nor scientist nor anything like that***

But while at this years Owners Event in Maggie Valley, and at the Snappys Italian Diner we stopped to get dinner at one night, whenever Teddy & I got a free minute, I'd go walking around looking for RTs that their owners left their windshields in the middle or full up position. This is best for viewing the majority of the center dog-bone support that we're talking about here. So I ended up inspecting 17 dog-bones in total, and out of those 17, I found 6 to have visible cracks in the support:shocked:

:yikes: I was shocked that it was that many :yikes: I thought maybe one or two, but 6 out of 17 :yikes: BRP has a MAJOR ISSUE with this :lecturef_smilie:

Out of the 6 that I did find cracked, I was only able to show or tell 2 of the owners about their issues, and sadly, neither of them had even heard of SpyderLovers.com  so I told them to get in contact with their respective dealers when they get home from the Event and they should cover them under warranty without issue, and for them personally to join the site:firstplace: cause we usually have more information available to us than even our dealers have

Both were very appreciative of the fact that a total stranger would look out for their interest in such a way, and that surprised me a little, as I guess I've just taken it for granted, at least with fellow SpyderLovers.com members, we all try to look out for each other and help in any way we can. We're all in this together, like an extended family, so why not make it the
:firstplace:Best we can:firstplace:

Do yourself a favor if you have an RT or know someone that does, and keep an eye on your center windshield support. One that I checked that was ok, the owner had almost a grand worth of video equiptment mounted to the top of the dash, and if his support gave way at highway speeds, well .......................... :cus::shocked::sour::yikes: I think he'd be none to happy about that:cus:

Revelation can be a scary thing

The more I try to put this behind me, the more I struggle to understand just what 'IT' is that I'm trying to put behind me  I really do appreciate all the comments and posts and PMs of support and well wishes

After a few back and forth conversations discussing this, I think I'm starting to understand the underlining issue that just may be the root cause of 'IT' ALL :opps:

Are you aware?

I remember when we traded our Hell on Wheels 2010 Timeless Black RT-S which ended up being a Bait & Switch that I settled for, for Teds Red Sled. After the long trip home from doing the deal with Len (then at Cowtown) I carefully backed our new ryde into its new home in the garage. And there it sat, for 3 days. I was mesmerized, captivated, enthrawed. I'd just open the garage door and stare at the machine for countless time. Even had a neighbor come up & ask if I was ok, cause I had just been standing there for almost an hour, and he was worried I may be having a siesure or something, seriously ..................... But all in all, truth was, I was scared. It was just to beautiful a machine to ryde, to risk damaging that pristine new paint job.

Coming from a poor family, that 2010 RT-S was the very 1st Brand New Automobile of any type that I had ever bought in my life, so it was a big deal, especially costing a little over $30K with the trailer and everything else. I had worked every bit of overtime I could, 7 days a week, 12 hours a day just to save up for the down payment to get the loan for the machine.

TBC.................. work work work

windshields / brackets checked

Dave, were any of the windshields that you checked the vented type? I'm wondering if that decreases the bracket cracking issue? You can bet I'm checking mine now before every ride.

You would think that woulda been something I looked at, but ........................

Dave, were any of the windshields that you checked the vented type? I'm wondering if that decreases the bracket cracking issue? You can bet I'm checking mine now before every ride.

It didn't even cross my mind at the time to check what type of shield was on the inspected bikes. Mind you, I tried not to be obvious about it, as I didn't want ppl to think I was trying to mess with someones Spyder, so I was just casually glancing up under the shield as I was walking by, and if I saw one that looked cracked, I'd stop and try to actually see if I could feel the crack by rubbing my nail over it. But I didn't even think to check the type of shield on them, tho just by memory (not too good :opps:) & guessing, I'd say most were the 2011-2012 smaller shields without the holes in them, as those didn't come out til this year. Again, that's a total guess :dontknow: Having Teddy to drag me around and try to keep me in the shade most the time can make things a lil challenging

getting on the road again?

Well, are you going to have everything back together and be able to get back on the road for the upcoming holiday weekend? I'm sure there will be lots of people ready for a Teddy sighting! I'm sure he's ready to get rolling again.:2thumbs:

Creative minds, they aren't all the same ya know:lecturef_smilie: Mine, not so creative:rolleyes: but it did come up with this for a sun-canopy to protect Teddy from getting sun-burned while summer ryding, and to help provide the lil guy with a more comfortable ryde;) which for the past year, it worked as hoped, designed & executed
attachment.php

Above is our prototype Version 1.0 tho it had gone thru many different incarnations, coverings, colors, looks and numerous mounting techniques, it worked. My major flaw with it however was drilling my own hole at the front center point to allow a mounting point for our third pole ram-mount/pvc leg support. Whenever you drill something like a shield, you weaken its integrity, and along with all the vibrations and turbulence from the wind, it finally gave way and cracked on our rigid ryde to this years SpyderFest:(

So now, we're on Version 2.0 and soon to be 2.1 cause I'm not entirely happy with our new set-up, even tho it is performing well, its just not good enough, and then I've really been struggling with being able to add rain protection for our lil star, cause at past events, both Owners, SpyderFest and SITA all three that we try our best to regularly attend, we've always been caught in the rain, sometimes heavy downpours as many of you are all to familiar with yourselves. Well, as with any prototype, when you go on to the next Incarnation, you try to improve and make better your project, correct as many weaknesses as possible, and that's our intent here, with Teddys Sun-Canopy V2.0 as seen in this pic from this years Owners Event (thanks btw to Arrrrrr for the pic;))

HuH!!! Something was wrong with Teddy??? Thank YOU ALL for your kind words of support

I've cut his pain meds back down to his normal 1cc daily dose, not for pain management, but to keep his collapsing trachea issue under control and the pup seems to be doing just fine :ohyea::bowdown::doorag::bowdown: I mean, if you didn't know what had happened just 2 weeks ago, you'd never think there was an issue with the way he's acting now :yes:He's back to his normal rambunctious lovable self :ohyea:

We've not ridden any this week, as I'm still waiting for the new ram-mount that I ordered last week to arrive :sour: I was hoping it would be here by now, but still no shipping notification :( and I've got his rear compartment area taken apart ready to do the mods.

Its a good thing today is our last day of work before shut-down, I can use this coming week to work on everything and hopefully make some headway. Didn't know if we were going to be going to CA with my brothers to visit family out there or not, but my one brother had a complication after his arm surgery, so the CA trip isn't going to happen, which honestly, is a relief, cause I knew we couldn't afford to go anyways, and hated the thought of my brothers having to pay for everything for Teddy & I, so it all works out for the best. We'll have the entire week to work on getting everything done:pray: I hope
