Dave & Teddy's Most Excellent Adventures 2012

Teddy's Tail Part V

So I started my search, trying the pound, the net, Craigslist and the papers for a Pomeranian puppy. The pound had plenty of pups, but none were Poms and the Poms that they did have at that time were all older adults and I knew I wanted a pup so I could properly train "spoil" him, so I kept looking til one day, I came across an ad in the local paper for a private breeder with pure bred Pom pups for $250, which wasn't a bad price. So I called, and the lady breeder was about 60 miles away in Ohio and she only had two pups left, a cream and a black. As soon as she told me that she had a cream Pom, my memories instantly went back to Romeo, and that heartfelt fealing was once again in my chest. I told her right then that I was interested in the cream and that I would be leaving right away and should be there within an hour or so if she would kindly hold the cream one til I got there, which she agreed. So, I stopped by the ATM and took out $300 to make sure I had enough funds (a little extra, just in case) cause I was intent on coming home with that cream colored Pomeranian puppy. The entire drive there was a fond trip down memory lane for me, of all the wonderful times and shared experiences that I enjoyed with Romeo and I was so looking forward to making new memories with a new "Best Friend" that I would once again fall in love with.

Sure enough, about 75 minutes later, I'm pulling onto a gravel driveway leading to a little old country house with a couple of small out-buildings out in the middle of nowhere I had ever been before. As soon as I opened the car door, I could hear the yap yap yap of mutiple little ankle biters, but none were in sight. So I walked up to the front door of the house and pensively knocked, not knowing exactly what to expect. A kind faced middle aged woman came to the door and instructed me to go around the side of the house to the back yard where the kennels were and that she would shortly bring the two Pom pups up to the empty kiddy pool for me to look at and play with. Never thought about it before, but an empty kiddy pool does work very well for corralling and showing little pups, so I could tell this lady had done this before and she seemed that she knew what she was doing, which is always a good sign when looking into potentially buying from a private breeder. Her kennels were neat, orderly and clean, and the dogs had plenty of room to move about, so that further reasured me that she was in fact a "good" breeder and not one of the "puppy-mill" type of breeders.

Within a couple of minutes, she brought out the two pups that she had mentioned, tho I wasn't sure why she even brought out the black one, as I wasn't interested in him, and told her that I was only interested in the cream colored one when we talked on the phone, but whatever. As soon as she put them down together, side by side, I was perplexed at what I was seeing. The cream colored pup was twice the size of the black one, so I asked her

"What, are these from two different litters?"

"No"
she stated, "their brothers from the same litter, just the black one is the 'runt' of the litter"

"Oh WoW, such a big difference in size, I'm amazed. And what gives with the black ones tail, or lack thereof, did you actually dok it?"
I asked, with a little disgusted inflection in my voice.

(side note: The Breed Standard for Poms is that they all should have fluffy, curly Q tails that drape over the middle of their backs, and the cream coloreds' tail looked perfect, but the black pup only had a straight little stub about an inch long, with no curl at all, making me wonder if she actually doc'd it)

"Oh NO!" she quickly replied "I would never think of doing something like that, that's just wrong."

"I agree, so what gives?"
I asked again.

"I was hoping you wouldn't notice," she said with a chuckle. "Since the black one is the runt out of a litter of 6, when the mom wasn't around and the pups were hungry, they'd all take turns sucking on the little black ones tail just like it was their moms teet, and I didn't think much of it, thought it was actually kinda cute to be honest with ya. But I'm guessing since the black one was so little, that he really couldn't defend himself and stop his sibblings from doing it, and after about 3 weeks of them constantly doing that, well, about half of his tail actually fell off, it was laying right there on the kennel floor one day, just the little black nub of his tail. I was a little worried and checked him out real well, no bleeding or even a scab to be found, but I took him to the vet to be safe and they said he should be fine, just won't be up to breed standard as he only has half a tail now. I tell ya, I had never seen anything like that happen in 15 years of breeding." she confided in me.

"Wow, poor little guy. He's already had life kinda rough and at only 8 weeks old," I was thinking to myself.

The lady continued, "Yeah, I doubt I'll ever find the runt a good home, not being to breed standard, you couldn't show him and being the runt, you wouldn't want to breed him either, cause they tend to be more prone to health issues, ya know? Heck, if I knew someone would just give him a good home, I'd let him go for only a hundred bucks."

"A hundred bucks, Really?"
I questioned.

"Well yeah, beats having to have him put down." she said matter of factly.

Her last statement hit me hard, like a ton of bricks to the gut. Having to put him down, just cause he's a runt with a stubby tail? I understood she was a professional breeder and they do it for the love of the animal, to better the breed but also for the financial incentives it can provide. If she couldn't sell him, and didn't have him put down, then she'd have to keep him, couldn't show or breed him, and he would become a financial liability for her, this I understood, but I still didn't like it.

So, with her last statement reverberating around in my head, I drew my attention to the little black runt with the stubby tail instead of the cream colored sibling that I knew for sure would one day get a good home, that I originally had set my heart on.

Funny how knowing circumstances can change not only ones perspective but also their feelings. Damnit, its not right that the under dog 'pun intended' always gets the shaft.

Teddy's Tail Part VI

So now my attention, along with my swelling heart, was drawn to the little black runt that nobody wants. When I say little, I mean "Runt little" as in his enire body could almost fit in the palm of my hand, and this was at eight weeks of age. Not joking one bit when I said his brother was twice his size, it was uncanny . This was also the first time I had ever seen a totally black (or so I thought) Pomeranian up close, only seeing them in the Kennel Shows and in pictures, where the reddish fox looking color was the most common.

My second Pom, after Romeo passed was Cocoa. I named her that, cause when I first got her as a pup, she had a beautiful black and gray colored coat, and she was only big enough to fit inside one of those big coffee cups, and thats what she reminded me of, a cup of Cocoa with whipped cream on top. Little did I know then, that was just her "puppy coat" and as an adult, she looked just like a fluffy fox, totally reddish bronz with just a hint of charcoal undercoat.

So I started looking closely at this little runt to see what all I could see about a pup I wasn't even really interested in, but his heart wrenching story of a bleak future reality made me want to help out if I could. So upon further checking ...... I noticed that he wasn't entirely black, but mostly black, with three solid white toes on his right rear foot, a blaze of solid white chest hair right down the center of his chest and just the hint of white right around his muzzle, pretty unique markings for a Pomeranian, and I like different, so I was a little more interested in him than I was before.

But everytime I tried to play with the little guy and see what his personality was like, his BIG brother would come over and basically walk right over him, pushing the runt out of the way so that he could get all of my attention. I kept pushing the BIG one back and trying to give the runt a chance, but the BIG brother would just keep coming back and walking right over the runt. After repeating this a few times, and getting frustrated with the BIG one, I finally asked the breeder if she wouldn't mind taking the cream colored pup away so I could have some one on one time with the little black runt. At my request, the breeder was all smiles and quickly scooped up the cream colored pup and took him back to the kennels, leaving me alone with this little black runt that couldn't even defend himself against his own brother.

How sad I felt for this little guy. Growing up, I was bullied alot in school, to the point I hated school with a passion, so I knew from personal experience what it felt like and how frustrating it was to be bullied. I think with that, I started allowing myself to open up to the possibilities that I didn't HAVE to have another cream colored Pom, like Romeo was and that maybe giving this little black runt a fair shot at life was the better way to go.

With his BIG brother out of the picture, his personality quickly started to become evident. He was very playful, liked to lick alot and was passive and loving in nature and not pushy or aggressive and I liked what I was seeing. Being so little and almost entirely black, all I could see from my vantage point of standing over him was that he had two black dots for eyeballs, but I knew that couldn't be the case, so I picked him up to my eye level. And when I looked into his big bright eyes, I kinda got lost in how deep and dark brown they actually were and not black like they appeared before, just beautiful. And then, cause I had him close enough to be looking into his eyes, he started licking on my cheek, and I think he had me right there, game over, I was hooked.

After further checking, he appeared to be healthy in every way, no abnormalities were evident besides his small stature. Having previous personal experience in breeding from when I was married, I knew all about the issues that this breeder had hinted at, when she told me she thought she'd never find this runt a good home. As runts grow to maturaty, health issues usually develop as well and can lead to expensive vet treatments, procedures and sometimes, lifetime complications and even death. But damnit, its not this little guys fault that he was born the runt, nor that part of his tail fell off. I made up my mind right then and there, I was the person that was gonna give this lil black runt with the stubby tail a good home and that I was taking him home with me that day.

Teddy's Tail Part VII

The breeder once again popped back up and asked if I had any questions and we went back and forth for a few minutes discussing papers, registering and other common formalities. She could tell that I had fallen for the lil guy and you could see the joy in her face to know that she had found him a good home and that she would no longer have to think about possibly having to put him down.

After getting all the paper work (BTW, he was born on 4/20/2008) and puppy supplies stowed away in the car, it was time for us to make our way out into the big old world for our first time, just the two of us together. We said our thanks and goodbyes as the lil black runt with the stubby tail that no one else wanted gave the loving breeder a couple more good lick'ns on the cheek to remember him bye.

This was the very first car ryde for the little black runt, and I wasn't sure how he would handle it, as many of the smaller breed dogs tend to get car-sick rather easily on their maiden voyages to their new homes, but this little black runt proved stout and didn't have any issues with motion sickness at all. Oh how little did I know then, that that fact would prove to one day be invaluable for the future of this little black runt with a stubby tail.

On the long ride home, I kept thinking of how different this little black fluff ball was from any of the other Poms that I had had in the past and that made it rather difficult to come up with a fitting name for the lil guy, so I decided to allow a few days interaction with him before we settled on a name.

Many people thru the years have asked me, why did I name him Teddy and upon looking at him now, I don't really see it either-LOL But there was a rhyme & a reason behind his name, I swear. Mind you now, we're not talking about the Spyder Ryde'n Teddy we all know of today, we're talking about a little black fluff ball of a runt with a stubby tail, with a coat of jet black hair about 3 inches long. Being the runt and so little, his entire body (minus his BIG HEAD-lol) litterally fit into the palm of my hand.

I remember a couple of days after bringing the lil guy home, I was harness & leash training him and we had walked for the first time down to the little makeshift park along the river that's right in front of our condo. There's an abandoned road thats not been used in many many years, that runs thru the lil park and it actually ends in the water of the Mighty Ohio river and thats where we found ourselves. Teddy was so cute back then, being so dang little, almost everything that I had bought for him was Extra-Small and even those items were still HUGE on the lil guy. If memory serves correct, it was the middle of June and the hot sun was beating down on us at the edge of the river.

Cliff hangers!

Dave, you really like to draw out the suspense, don't you?

But I'm enjoying your story immensely! Hubby (KCPete) and I have an RT and 4 furry kids at home but only one is small enough to ride with us (a dachsie). since we ride 2 up (at least until the budget allows for MY OWN spyder!) I don't think my little bud Sonny will be a passenger for a while.

If you two are ever passing through Kansas City, give us a shout! We (all six of us) would love to meet you and treat to some world famous BBQ!
Take Care,
Janet (SpyderRocks)

OK. I just sat down to read this and realized it will take a while. Pardon me while I go to the fridge for a cold Miller Lite to enjoy while I read Dave's tale,,,,,, :roflblack:

My guess, is Dave is doing overtime so he can take Teddy traveling this summer, or do some new mods!:dontknow:

I was working as much OT as I could and overdid myself with to much too soon. Worked a different dept. than usual this past Thursday, was on my feet the entire shift and that wore on me but I was still feeling ok, so my buddy & I took Teddy to the Disc-Golf park to play a round, and I contorted my back into a position that I shouldn't have and something "popped" in my back, so we immediately stopped playing, went back to the house & I was on the couch with an Ice pad on my back for the next 4 days. Was so sore and couldn't hardly move on Friday, so I didn't work and had to take a Personal day on Friday, Monday & Tuesday. Went to a Chiropractor on Monday, and he was able to realign my spine where I had popped it out of place, nothing serious, just painful & ice remedied it. And along with working OT, and my back issues, I've also been working on Teddy's "Canopy" mod for his Red Sled, gotta get it done in time for the trip to Durango, ya know

Teddy's Tail Continuation

attachment.php
This is the very first pic I ever took of "Teddy" and I'm thinking he's around 4 months old here, still cute and fuzzy but he was growing like a weed and he actually started fitting into his harness around this time as well.

At Teddy's first vet check up, everything checked out fine and well but we were told that the health issues in runts usually don't start showing up til around the 6 month to a year checkups, and at his 6 month check up, the Vet discovered the inevitable "health" issues that (could?) did arise and we were made aware of three of them.

One, he has allergies.
This was a new one on me, not that I hadn't heard of it, but in all my years of having and breeding Poms, I had never personally had one that actually had allergies. Well, one day out of the blue, while brushing Teddy, I noticed he had a perfectly round bald spot about the size of a silver dollar directly above his right rear leg. I thought for sure that he had a simple case of Ring Worm, but after many different tests at the vets, they were all negative for any type of parrasites. So his Vet brought up the possibility that he may have a food allergy cause they often manifest themselves in bald spots in dogs. Not having the funds to actually have Teddy go thru a full battery of allergy tests, his Vet suggested temporarily putting him on a Vet-Only HypoAlergenic Diet, nothing in it but "Duck & Potato" no preservatives no anything .................................. Seriously? Yes, believe it or not, this dog has his own prescription card and PetsMart won't actually allow me to buy his "Special" dog food without showing his prescription card, WOW, really??? YUP!

Two, he has a collapsing trachea.
Sounds really serious (& it can be) but with proper moderation and medicine, its mostly a non issue now, but back in the early days, I thought the poor little guy was dieing on me. When we'd start playing around, especially if it was hot out and he was already excited and worked up, he'd start uncontrollably hacking as if he was a 60 year old lady that had smoked her entire life. It would take a while of him coughing and hacking before he'd be able to get it under control, and I felt so bad for him when these eppisodes would attack him. After talking with the Vet and getting educated on the issue, we realized surgery wasn't a cheap nor viable option, with success rates being as low as 10%, it wasn't worth risking and we opted for a liquid medicine as needed. Granted, it IS a barbituate, so our little Teddy is a known druggard, but by golly, this stuff really works well for him, so he gets one liquid syringe a day and he rarely goes into the coughing fits except for when he gets REALLY Excited or OverHeated.

Three, like many small breeds, he suffers from a Luxating Patela.
To those of you that aren't aware, that's the technical term for when a dogs "Knee-cap" pops out of its socket, so to speak. To a trained and gentle hand, the knee-cap can usually be massaged back into its socket, providing instant relief of the pain and discomfort that it causes your little one. Before Teddy, I had once again only heard about "Luxating Patellas" being a health issue with smaller breed dogs, but had never experienced it with one of my own pets. On one of our car rides (pre-Spyderdom) when Teddy was around 5 months old, he was riding freely in the front seat of the Cougar when we got cut off by some !@#$% teenager on a cell phone, not paying attention. I had to quickly slam on the brakes and swerve out of my lane to keep from hitting the guy, but we just barely made it. Only problem, Teddy went flying from the front passenger leather seat to the floor and when all the comotion was over with, I noticed he was hoping around on 3 legs and holding his right rear leg up in the air. "OH SH*T!!!" is what I thought, "Great, now the poor lil guy has broken his little leg, UGH!!!" We immediately rushed to the Vet thinking the worse, when come to find out, its not broken, fractured or hurt at all, just "popped" out of socket. This is when the Vet trained me on how and where to properly feel for the knee-cap and to be able to tell if its out or in and also, if it IS out, how to massage it back into place, always good info. to know.
