• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

D.E.S.S. experiment

Hi Paul,
I never said that they were 100% blameless... nojoke
beefy went off on them, and then included his own employers, in an attempt to create an indictment of large corporations in general.
His own words:
"I work for UPS and they are the same way. They care less about there customer's. Big corporate scum at its best."
As a business-owner: this offends me... :banghead:

Looking at the DESS problem from a problem-solving perspective:
They start getting complaints from customers
They see it in the forums
Their dealer network is ordering the dang modules at an unprecedented pace...
Something is up...
They have to try an identify who the problem affects; both from a model and model-year standpoint.
Then they must figure out what is going on?
Is it a parts problem? Assembly protocols? A QC breakdown?

Finally: they get to figure out how to fix it, and then start implementing that fix.

NONE of this happens overnight! Folks get impatient and cranky... and the term, "Corporate Scum" starts showing up.

You must remember how long it took them to implement the 2013 RT heat attenuation fixes. It wasn't fun waiting for it... but it does work.

Second key also does it.

I have never tried the second key. At this point, I don't want to introduce any additional variables. If I can get many more restarts without the problem, I will try the other key and see what it does. It would be really nice if the problem didn't happen again but, the jury is still out.

I leave my key in my bike in my garage so the orientation is the same as when I last rode it. Today it would not start and the DESS error came up. Tried the 2nd, no change.

Must have been the same engineer that engineered my clock that gains 30 minutes over the summer, (unless it's set on Canadian time) and designed the fuel tank with the bottom of the fill tube below the level of the top of the tank.

Miss my Gold Wing when stuff like this happens.

I had this problem on my 2014. The keys were replaced and set to the machine and the ignition was replaced as well. Worked great for a while and I would only get the error now and then. One day for kicks I checked the battery cables and my Neg was not tight. It wasn't falling off loose but just loose. Tightened it and never had the problem again. As stated above not scientific, but did solve my problem.

Well, today I started the Spyder three times. Two of the three were good. One included a D.E.S.S. code. Oh well, it was good for about 29 of 30 starts. When I got the code, cycling the ignition brought it back to life, it started and I went on my way. :gaah:
What do you mean by 'cycling the ignition'?

Thanks.

I never knew when mind was going to give the DESS code. It would be any time. I had my Spyder less than a year and had the DESS code maybe 10 to 12 times. It started to be more often. I purchase a new DESS modular from Cheap Motorcycle Parts and replaced it myself. Never have had the code again.

Hate t bust your bubble, but the error can come in cycles.
Once it goes away, it could be weeks or months before returning, but believe me it WILL return and with each return it takes longer and harder to clear.

AJ
:agree: it sure can, and it will leave you stranded!

DESS / ESS "Failure to Start" still a problem?

I notice this thread being picked up again after a two year hiatus.

This was one of the reliability problems that caused me to decide against a purchase years ago.

I'm interested in knowing if this DESS / ESS related "Failure to Start" is still occurring on later model ('17+) Spyders?

Since I replaced the DESS modular on my 2015 RT I have never had a DESS Key again. It looks like it was in some of the early models. Don't let this stop you from purchasing a Spyder.

The DESS failures were in the earlier spyder models. I started the D.E.S.S. KEY CODE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thread. I have a 2014RTS-SE6 and I have the D.E.S.S. Module/Switch replaced twice( both times under warranty). Since then I have not had the D.E.S.S. error show up.

All mind seem to be was the module. I never changed the switch but have never had the DRESS KEY CODE since I changed the module. I am sure you are right it was just on the earlier models.
