cruise control question

I'm using the Audiovox Electric Servo version. I had the Vacuum unit for a few thousand miles (and I've installed the vac units on other bikes as well). But vacuum has inherent issues and I decided to try the non-vacuum version. Figured it would be a more positive unit, smaller too.

I swapped the servo unit for the vacuum unit before the California trip. Was not as happy with it as the vac unit but I didn't have time to dial it in before I left. And there isn't much help in the instructions because (DUH) the Spyder is not a supported application.

I didn't mess with it again until just before this Canada trip to Magog because it worked ok. But I did some adjusting just before we left and I've got it working really well. It is very positive and never releases due to lack of vacuum.

Now I like it at least as well as the previous vac unit (which actually worked pretty well) and I'm sure I can get it better. I want to try some different dip switch settings that I think will make it a bit more accurate. On flat ground it is dead steady but it drifts 1-2 mph on hills. I think I can improve on that.

Otherwise, it's great. Engages instantly. But if it never gets any better than now I'll be happy.

OK, we finally found a guy that has installed the electric version. How about some help? I called a dealer selling the electronic version and he said another guy tried to install it on a spyder and the vss wire on the spyder wouldn't work so he had to buy the $50 sensor kit for this unit. This is getting real expensive, $250 for the kit, $45-$65 for the switch, and another $50 for the sensor. Did you use the vss on the bike, and if you did, where do we find it? I'm thinking about getting the $100 vacuum unit just because of price. This is getting out of hand! LOL

Compared to the MCC unit--- if you can do this for $300 it would be a deal. Many that have used the $100 version had to do things to supplement the vacuum to get it to work properly.

Perhaps Ron can share some more info about his install----(ask Lamont just how he hooked it up for him--- :roflblack:).

Great idea! Love to hear Lamont's reply to this! :D

I did not use the VSS wire because I do not want to mess with the electronics of the Spyder and it isn't necessary. The kit comes with a magnet sensor kit and that works just fine.

I put the magnet on the countershaft sprocket. A much better way to go than the rear wheel rotor. There is a nice little bolt right there to mount the pickup unit, it's protected, out of the way and only needs 1 magnet instead of the 2 that you have to install with the McCruise.

Works great!

If you get the vacuum version be sure to get the reservoir or you'll have problems. I think you can find them for around $20 plus shipping.

I've installed several of the vacuum ones and I never bought the vacuum canister. I always made one out of PCV pipe. Very easy to do and a lot cheaper. You say the electronic kit comes with a magnetic pickup? When I talked to a retailer, he said I'd need to buy the $50 magnetic kit. Now I wonder if they all come with the magnetic kit or it is a special "package" deal you got? The questions never end. Do you have any pictures of your installation you could post, like where you mounted everything? thanks

I ended up combining my vac and servo unit components. It may be the vacuum set came with the magnet pickup component (which I would not have used on the Vacuum unit because it runs off the Tach and not the VSS feed).

Checking the current parts list you do have to purchase it separately with the electric unit. Can't find a parts list for the vacuum unit but I do have one at Lamonts house (can't imagine what it would be doing there).

Of course, if you hooked it up to the VSS it would be less expensive and might work better as well.

Well, the dealer said one spyder guy in CA tried hooking it up to the bikes vss (does anyone know where that wire is?) and it didn't work or else didn't work well, so he bought the magnet kit. I'm afraid I'll have to buy the magnet kit. Now tell me, is it really worth the extra money to get the electronic one vs the vacuum one? I always had great luck with the vacuum one (used to pay $79 for them) but they were a bit of a bugger to find places for that large server and the equally large vacuum canister. I thought maybe the electronic one would be a lot easier to mount? A little easier? Not much difference?

I don't think there is much difference between the two systems for install. You don't need the additional vac canister for the electronic unit but that isn't a big deal either way.

The electronic unit is smaller but heavier. It takes up a little less space in the engine compartment. If someone is installing it let me know. I'll check my current dip switch settings. That part was a bit of trial and error because the instructions don't support the Spyder.

If somone does come up with a successful VSS install I'd like to know about it. But the magnetic pick-up works good and is easy to install.

Ron,
I ordered my electronic unit. Will be installing it as soon as it arrives. Please share your dip-switch settings. Thanks. Also any pictures of where you mounted items would be helpful (no use re-inventing the wheel).

switch mount

OK, guys... how about everyone posting pictures of how they mounted the control switch for their control. I'm sure there are a lot of good ideas out there. Also, would someone post the dip switch setting for the electronic audiovox cruise control that you found most appropriate? thanks

Anyone installed the electronic audiovox cruise control? Is it easier? No hassle with vacuums? Pics of install?? Or the Rostra electronic cruise control?

I bought a Rostra Universal Unit for my 2008 SE5 and am ready to install it. Sure would be nice to have those dip switch settings before beginning.
Also need to know which wire is the VSS. Anybody?

Cruise control settings

I installed the Audiovox electronic cruise control with the following settings:
1 On. High Gain Sensitivity
2 On
3 On 4000 pulses per mile.
4 Off
5 Off
6 Off
7 Off Engine setup timer. 6 cylinder High
8 On
9 On
10 Off VSS source sine wave input. Use magnetic speed sensor on output pulley
11 Off Manual transmission
12 Off. Open circuit. Rostra 250-3592 control switch

Everyone I talked to has used the magnetic speed sensor, not the VSS wiring.
