I own properties in Myrtle Beach so I'm very familiar with the problems down there...
Bike week is a total headache for those who live there...you take the beginning of the summer holiday, Memorial Day weekend, and make it so no families are going to go there...period! This is a huge loss of revenue.
In fact, many residents head out of town to avoid the fiasco.
Merchants don't get any business (safe for the bars)...the bikers chase out what should be one of the most profitable weekends of the year...this is the take from the locals...
I have followed the news on Myrtle beach bike week for the past year and read forums with people saying I will take my money other places, but while looking last night for a hotel for the second week of Harley week I ran into trouble finding anything available. Either the hotels are not renting rooms that week or a bunch of the people saying they are not going have changed there minds.
As of now if we stay out of the city of Myrtle beach there is no real changes to bike week other than vendors being spread out more and able to sell a few less days. There was never anything much going on in the city anyways other than Broadway at the Beach. As far as a few less days is no real problem since most people do not stay the entire time. Just plan your trip on the days the vendors are there. Spreading out the permitts does not bother me any, I like to ride while there so it does not seem like such a bad idea to spread the crowds out a bit. When riders spread out we will spend money over a larger area at diffrent restaraunts and fuel stations which kinda spreads the wealth around.
I do disagree when people say bikers are not spending money while at bike week. For example in the fall my group spent
700 bucks for lodging
at least 2 meals a day eaten out at local restaraunts
fuel in bikes
fueled up truck leaving town
bought shirts from wings store
beer and food from food lion
smokes from several gas stations
tylenol from cvs
sunglasses from wings store
stainless steel bolts from ace hardware
It may seem like only the bars and out of town vendors get the business but we do spend money while there. Bike week for some is the only vacation we get and we make the most of it. I know a bunch of loud bikes and scruffy looking people can be a pain but we mean no harm and most of us mean no harm and just enjoy the company of other bikers. It always amazes me that there can be so many people together durring Harley week and see so little trouble going on. Bikers are a special class of people who ride for the ride and enjoy life. I would never take my kids to the beach durring spring break or senior week but as soon as they are old enough they will be at bike week with me.
Just my opinion
Everyone is entitled to their opinion...but from knowing many down there as I own land and properties, the bikers don't generate business as families would...period. Barefoot Landing is empty as are the other 'tourist' spots...bikers get rooms and eat, sure, but they also drink, make a lot of noise, and are not family friendly...they effectively scare everyone else out of town, whether they want to or not...that's just the way it is...

My opinion would be that in these tough economic times that continuing the event would be in the best interest for the community. Like it or not these type of events do bring in more money in a single week than a normal week of tourist traffic would. Certainly the Baskin Robbins might not do as well as a bar does during bike week, but you're still talking about millions going into the economy during the event. Not to mention that fact that with bikers invariably comes the civil infractions which bring revenue into the government offices. So good, bad, or indifferent Myrtle Beach may regret making the decision that they have.
Plus unless the citizens who complain have lived there longer than the bike week events then they don't have room for complaints. It's like the person who buys a house near an airport and then complains about the planes. I live in a county where our population more than doubles during the winter months. It increases traffic and often times we see an increase in traffic accidents during these months. It makes it a dangerous time to be a motorcyclist, but I don't complain because it's good for the community.
Several years ago when I was down there I saw the numbers the community was discussing in regards to the loss of income...it was a huge amout of money for many of the small businesses...someone wrote above that bike week is not Memorial Day weekend...actually, there are a couple of bike weeks, and the one I am referring to is during Memorial Day Weekend...Myrtle Beach collectively would like to get rid of this event and bring back families for this holiday weekend...
The memorial day weekend bike week is an Atlantic beach event and spills over into Myrtle beach and surrounding areas. I saw the kind of stuff going on durring Memorial day weekend and was not impressed with the self contol of the participants. I am trying to be nice here and not go into details about the activities I saw. Seems like it would of worked out for everyone if the Memorial day weekend is the problem if everyone involved would of gotten together and worked out an agreement to move that event to another week. It could of been a pretty easy compromise but I am sure some would of complained and sued claiming discrimination or somthing. Atlantic beach is still welcoming the bike rally which is confusing because one city says the rally cost to much money for law enforcement and loss of business money and the other city is welcoming the bikers. :dontknow:
Either way I hope some day there will be a compromise on all parts and everyone can just get along. I have no real opinion on the Memorial Day week because I have not been there that week since I lived there in 2001 and have no plans to return that week. I wish there was some way to seperate the two events and deal with each one seperatly without discrimination being hollard. None of the past rule changes were made with any thought of race I think it was done to help control the crowds. Durring Harley week we spread out over many miles from Murrels inlet to North Myrtle, durring Memorial day weekend everyone crams into north myrtle and down town myrtle. Same amount of people in tiny area. Ah well it would be good if city leaders worked with other towns that host rallied like sturgis and daytona and work together to for plans that work, brainstorming kinda thing, like a study group sharing ideas on what works for each area to make the even turn a proffit as well as keep bikers and locals happy. There should be a way to work together.
Can't we just all get along.
