County Geting in on Myrtle Beach Restrictions

As usual, the few ruin it for the many.

My take is, it is their city and they should be able to run it any way they want as long as they stay within the law. Not sure they are doing that but that's another story.

There are plenty of places that will gladly take our money. If we behave ourselves then we can stay. If not, then they may ask us to leave and not come back.

Again, the problem isn't the 95% of us that do it right. The shame is that it's always the same 5% taking the rest of us down.

I own properties in Myrtle Beach so I'm very familiar with the problems down there...

Bike week is a total headache for those who live there...you take the beginning of the summer holiday, Memorial Day weekend, and make it so no families are going to go there...period! This is a huge loss of revenue.

In fact, many residents head out of town to avoid the fiasco.

Merchants don't get any business (safe for the bars)...the bikers chase out what should be one of the most profitable weekends of the year...this is the take from the locals...

I've heard several different stories as to why this came about. I've heard that after an killing that was actually unrelated to the bike week festivities that the city said enough is enough, I've heard that it's related to them wanting to stop a different event but decided to get rid of both bike events to be fair, and of course there's is the one that says loud pipes and other behavior is to blame. Bottom line the city has to do what's right for it's citizens and it's businesses. If they don't want bike week than it's their right.

A few years back Daytona Beach enacted a noise ordinance for bikeweek and biketoberfest activitiies. Most people said it was going to ruin the events and that they were chasing off bikers. Well the Police are very good about enforcing it, the ones who get the tickets are the ones who sit in traffic rapping on their pipes.

The Harley Bike week is May 7-18 The Atlantic Beach bike week is memorial day weekend, always wondered why anyone would schedule a bike rally that weekend. Almost always attend the Harley Rally and the Fall Rally. I have never been there for the Atlantic Beach Rally, so can only report what I've been told. A few years ago the traffic was so rowdy on Ocean Blvd at the Atlantic Beach Rally the city made traffic one way. The NAACP threatened to sue, the the city make the second weekend of the Harley bike week one way to accomadate them. I've been told a lot of the restraunts and even some of the bars close up memorial day weekend, and that rally is the one they want to get rid of, but are afraid of suits, so to be politically correct decided to get rid of both. Can't say there is not any trouble during the Harley bike week, but almost all I have spoke to are glad to see that Rally, especially the money it brings in. Been going to Myrtle Beach almost 40 years, the Rallys regularly for about 10. This will be the 69th year of the Harley Rally.

I have followed the news on Myrtle beach bike week for the past year and read forums with people saying I will take my money other places, but while looking last night for a hotel for the second week of Harley week I ran into trouble finding anything available. Either the hotels are not renting rooms that week or a bunch of the people saying they are not going have changed there minds.

As of now if we stay out of the city of Myrtle beach there is no real changes to bike week other than vendors being spread out more and able to sell a few less days. There was never anything much going on in the city anyways other than Broadway at the Beach. As far as a few less days is no real problem since most people do not stay the entire time. Just plan your trip on the days the vendors are there. Spreading out the permitts does not bother me any, I like to ride while there so it does not seem like such a bad idea to spread the crowds out a bit. When riders spread out we will spend money over a larger area at diffrent restaraunts and fuel stations which kinda spreads the wealth around.

I do disagree when people say bikers are not spending money while at bike week. For example in the fall my group spent
700 bucks for lodging
at least 2 meals a day eaten out at local restaraunts
fuel in bikes
fueled up truck leaving town
bought shirts from wings store
beer and food from food lion
smokes from several gas stations
tylenol from cvs
sunglasses from wings store
stainless steel bolts from ace hardware

It may seem like only the bars and out of town vendors get the business but we do spend money while there. Bike week for some is the only vacation we get and we make the most of it. I know a bunch of loud bikes and scruffy looking people can be a pain but we mean no harm and most of us mean no harm and just enjoy the company of other bikers. It always amazes me that there can be so many people together durring Harley week and see so little trouble going on. Bikers are a special class of people who ride for the ride and enjoy life. I would never take my kids to the beach durring spring break or senior week but as soon as they are old enough they will be at bike week with me.

Just my opinion

Everyone is entitled to their opinion...but from knowing many down there as I own land and properties, the bikers don't generate business as families would...period. Barefoot Landing is empty as are the other 'tourist' spots...bikers get rooms and eat, sure, but they also drink, make a lot of noise, and are not family friendly...they effectively scare everyone else out of town, whether they want to or not...that's just the way it is...

What most of us know as The Myrtle Beach Bike Week, the Harley Bike week IS NOT MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. Many people seem to get the 2 lumped together, although there is a week and a half between them.
As far as Barefoot laning goes, don't know about there business, but there couldn't be much as there parking lot is full of vendors, its hard to find a place to park a bike. I'm sure they get something for this. I know my Boss Hoss dealer is always setup at Colonial Mall, at the Bass Pro Shop Parking lot. He has to pay the county for a vendors permit and pay for the space in the parking lot. Like I have said earlier I don't know what happens during the Atlantic Beach weekend, Memorial day weekend.

I lived in Myrtle Beach for a summer and worked for Pirateland Campground. We bagan work in March and the place was empty until the first week of June except for Harley week we had several hundred bikers there. We only had a couple guys staying durring the other bike week. Just from the camping families goes there are not really any until the kids are out of shcool. I have visited Myrtle well not really Myrtle but surfside are every summer since I was a kid but we never really spent any time in the city of Myrtle.

Last fall rally we went to Broadway at the beach and the place was packed including inside the stores.I don't know if much buying was going on but it was crowded, same goes for the bass pro shop. As you said everyone has opinions but I just can't understand that no money is brought indurring harley week when I spent 400 bucks last fall in four days not counting my room which was split between 3 people and paid in advance. I bought one pair of clear glasses from a vendor but everything else was spent in local stores and restaraunts.

Maybee if it is shortened up to one week it would make everything tolerable. I don't think it is a good idea to combine both events into one because it would be hard to seperate the problems between the 2 groups of people that attend the two total diffrent style rallies.

:doorag:Either way bikers have been going to the beach for 68 years and soon to be 69. Old habbits are hard to break. If nothing else I am going to do my best to ride down for a couple days just to see how many people did show up. For me I like Myrtle beach rally because I can be there in 5 hours from home and I lived there so I know the area well and really like the area. :2thumbs:

:popcorn:I guess the best thing to do is set back, follow the laws and enjoy what we all like to do which is ride. With a large grouple of people in one place they have to be on top of things or it will get out of hand quick. I will visit the beach this spring, follow the speed limits, I don't drink anyways, ride safe , and enjoy the week with good friends but I will stay out of the city for the simple fact I don't want to put a helmet on just to go inside the city since they are nothing going on there anyways.

Again just my opinion.

My opinion would be that in these tough economic times that continuing the event would be in the best interest for the community. Like it or not these type of events do bring in more money in a single week than a normal week of tourist traffic would. Certainly the Baskin Robbins might not do as well as a bar does during bike week, but you're still talking about millions going into the economy during the event. Not to mention that fact that with bikers invariably comes the civil infractions which bring revenue into the government offices. So good, bad, or indifferent Myrtle Beach may regret making the decision that they have.

Plus unless the citizens who complain have lived there longer than the bike week events then they don't have room for complaints. It's like the person who buys a house near an airport and then complains about the planes. I live in a county where our population more than doubles during the winter months. It increases traffic and often times we see an increase in traffic accidents during these months. It makes it a dangerous time to be a motorcyclist, but I don't complain because it's good for the community.

Several years ago when I was down there I saw the numbers the community was discussing in regards to the loss of income...it was a huge amout of money for many of the small businesses...someone wrote above that bike week is not Memorial Day weekend...actually, there are a couple of bike weeks, and the one I am referring to is during Memorial Day Weekend...Myrtle Beach collectively would like to get rid of this event and bring back families for this holiday weekend...

The memorial day weekend bike week is an Atlantic beach event and spills over into Myrtle beach and surrounding areas. I saw the kind of stuff going on durring Memorial day weekend and was not impressed with the self contol of the participants. I am trying to be nice here and not go into details about the activities I saw. Seems like it would of worked out for everyone if the Memorial day weekend is the problem if everyone involved would of gotten together and worked out an agreement to move that event to another week. It could of been a pretty easy compromise but I am sure some would of complained and sued claiming discrimination or somthing. Atlantic beach is still welcoming the bike rally which is confusing because one city says the rally cost to much money for law enforcement and loss of business money and the other city is welcoming the bikers. :dontknow:

Either way I hope some day there will be a compromise on all parts and everyone can just get along. I have no real opinion on the Memorial Day week because I have not been there that week since I lived there in 2001 and have no plans to return that week. I wish there was some way to seperate the two events and deal with each one seperatly without discrimination being hollard. None of the past rule changes were made with any thought of race I think it was done to help control the crowds. Durring Harley week we spread out over many miles from Murrels inlet to North Myrtle, durring Memorial day weekend everyone crams into north myrtle and down town myrtle. Same amount of people in tiny area. Ah well it would be good if city leaders worked with other towns that host rallied like sturgis and daytona and work together to for plans that work, brainstorming kinda thing, like a study group sharing ideas on what works for each area to make the even turn a proffit as well as keep bikers and locals happy. There should be a way to work together.

Can't we just all get along.

It'd be nice...but human nature...no...people will not get along...and that will not change...history is our guide...if it's not money, it's land...if not land, then religion...if not religion, then resources...if not resources, then....you get the point...
