• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Cost of Belts

While at my dealer yesterday I priced a belt for my RT mainly out of curiosity, and it was $299! The mechanic said it was made by Gates, a prominent belt maker but he had no idea what the cross ref numbers might be. If anyone knows, how about sharing that info.

:popcorn: My guess is that you might get some answers by contacting Gates directly; at least you know who makes them for BRP!
Good Luck and please let us know what you find!

Check with your local NAPA store as they sell Gates timing belts for Goldwings,Valkyries,ST1100 and most bikes. The Drive belts are also of the same design so they may also carry them at a much reduced cost. Virtually all the Grimler style belts are made by Gates.[/QUOTE

Have inquery into Gates corporate for part #(s) for 2008=2012 and cost. Asked for by model break down for # and cost. Will keep others updated as information becomes available (or not)!!!

DRIVE BELT

Bumblebee,...33% cheaper is not a little cheaper.....it's a lot cheaper...a very lot cheaper.....Thanks...Mike....

Bates Video

Find the info you need to buy from a Bates distributor here.
One way to get the outside length of the belt without removing it is to duct tape some thin electrical wire to the belt, then rotate the rear wheel til the wire comes out where you can lay the wire down on the start point. Then cut wire where it butts up to the start point. remove it then measure the length with a tape measure,or steal the wife's cloth sewing tape and feed it through the same way. Then count the teeth in an inch and multiply X the length.

I have replaced two belts now at the $300.00 range. My only wonder is that if you use someone elses belt--will the dealer be willing to install if you are not mechanically inclined?

just my .02.

Wow.... 2 belts?

Guess I've been lucky. I don't run any belt guards at all... at least for the last 35,000 miles.... but I do carry an extra belt on long trips just in case..... ;-)

$200 is a great price for a belt.

Both belts were NOT defective. We picked up a rock by driving on gravel and it made a big crack in one belt. The other, I buried the back wheel in loose gravel and it caused the bike to come down on the belt and break it.

Bluedog sent me to Pro Calibre on line. The belts are $260 there.

Alaska - you need to get SpyderPop's "missing belt guard" - it's a bunch cheaper than a new belt - we've got a ton of gravel roads (and driveways) too.
