Cool Air Intake

I just installed the MMG cool air intake, yes I know how some members feel about the product and his statements on ebay, I have to say it is a very nice product and only took about 30 minutes to install the intake and Green performance filter. Big improvement on performance, no more surges and my engine temp which was constantly in the 5 bar range never got aboce 3 bars, even sitting in traffic. I know I could have went to the local auto store and purchased duct work, but it is a $17k bike and I don't think $85 dollars for the intake and another $64 for the filter will break the bank.

I think it's a decent option and worth a shot at doing. His other products are hit and miss on quality IMO. The hitch is the one that concerns me the most - very poor design.

I am impressed with the overall quality, the only modification needed to install the intake is you need to cut a small piece of plastic on the inside of the panel used for fog lights, this allows you to get a good fit with the piece of rubber hose included in the kit for a tight fit, you can really feel the bike sucking air in through the scoop. The original BRP intake is way to long and restrictive, not to mention is sucking all the engine heat into the intake. This will definatly improve top end performance. The direction included complete with step by step pictures were very helpful. I used a small cut off wheel to remove the plastic flap on the inside of the panel.

I'd buy this too but another person told me that he has been riding with the MMG cold air intake and he doesn't think it made any difference from the stock setup. Have you ridden it enough to state confidently that the MMG cold air intake gives you a performance boost? What other mods have you done to your Spyder that could also affect the running (upgraded air filter, aftermarket pipe, JuiceBox, etc.)?

Just remember - if you add more air--- you need to add more gas somehow to get any real performance boost.

cool air

I think the whole thing here is cold air and that makes the difference. Thats why it runs better when you first start out while the compartment is still a little cool. Once it heats up thats it . It becomes a hot air intake.
So it sounds like What I am looking for. I Will go for it. Besides I already have the fog light bezels plastic cut out. Wanted to run some homemade duct work but I thought it was cheesy lookin. since we spent $ 22000.00 to get and customize the spyder. We might aswell finish it properly.

I am currently running the MMG cool air intake, Can-Am Hindle exhaust and Green Performance Filter. I've only had the bike for going on four weeks and have a little over 2,000 miles on her.

:agree:

When sitting in stop and go traffic, the Spyder tends to overheat, the stock intake is nothing more than joined rubber tubes that are straight and way too long, all it does is suck in warm air from the engine compartment, the reason the MMG cool air intake works is it pulls air in the fog light cut out on the right side of the bike, the cooler air definately improves engine temperature and along with a Green filter improves performance.

Jeff, just to be clear, are you saying that sitting in traffic at say, 90deg F ambient temp and 70+% humidity it did not go above three bars? In less than two minutes under those conditions, mine's at five. Are you stopped & idling or moving forward?

Yesturday, it was 87 degrees with 70% humidity and I mean stop and go traffice, sitting still, drive 10 feet, stop, drive another 10 feet, stop. Before the intake, my spyder would have reached 5-7 bars on the temp gauge.

Remember, it may be warm outside, but thats no comparrison to the temperature of the engine compartment.

Jeff, that's a dramatic improvement and, for those without fog lights, seems like $ well-spent, even for "just" a plastic tube! Any issues with rain water being ingested?

Seeing I had the first and only cold air intake :joke: I can tell you that the intake didn't drop your temp sitting still and if you dropped two bars afterward it wasn't because of the cold air intake. It will run better for sure and that's why I did this mod some time ago. Glad it's working out for you. :doorag:

No, I haven't had any issues with rain, bugs or leaves. I was wondering the same thing. I guess it wouldn't be hard to place some kind of screen over the plastic intake before placeing the rubber hose over it. I wonder if panty hose would work?

I'm just reporting the experience I've had over the last 500 miles. Before installation, the spyder was almost always running 5 bars and up to 7 bars while sitting in heavy traffic. After the install, the most I've seen is 3 bars, no other changes have been made and I had the most problems with overheating on Route 30 heading through construction areas on the way to the dealer, heading through the same construction at even higher temps, no problem.

Like Lamonster says it is not cooling while it is stopped. The product must collect cooler air while slow going or much cooler air while doing the speed limit on city streets.Glad it is working keep us posted.

Thx.
