Considering buying my first Spyder

My wife and I are going to a 1.5 car arrangement which means I get to consider getting a Spyder. I've always thought they seemed great when they were announced but I never got the chance to really consider buying one.

I'm thinking of getting a 2012 RT-S SE5 that is still brand new from a local dealer. Price seems reasonable ($18,999) but of course it may be lacking some of the improvements from the 13 and 14 models.

I'm considering this a "starter" Spyder so not dropping 30K on a brand new model is appealing.

Is it a good idea to buy a 2012 or should I just suck it up and drop the $$$ on the 2014?

If your finances permit go for the 2014, they are great machines and worth the money!

Personally I think it is ALWAYS smart buying a new, older model and saving big bucks!!

Others will have to input on any known issues w/ a 2012 RT.

Good luck on whatever you choose!

Choices choices..!!

if it's a starter save the money and go for the 2012. It will give you miles of smiles and you will have a great time. When the time comes to upgrade there will be newer models. You will have to decide. The 2015's will be announced soon and you can add them to the mix. When will make a difference as well...

I'm pushing 20,000 mi on my 2012 RT.
Stlll runs like new.
By the time I'm ready to upgrade, I'll be looking to see what the 2016 or 2017 Spyders will offer.

I loved my 2012 RT-S sm5 and only had a vac hose issue at the map sensor at low miles. After the repair at the dealer I spotted the 2014 RT. This is the Spyder the way it should be ( for me ) with the smooth engine and 6 speed transmission and not having to wind it up to shift within the power band. Base RT in std. shift is around 22, 400.
Good luck.

The '12 is a good year for sure. ('13's did have some heat issues due to some design changes preparing for the '14 model/engine change). I have a '10 that I bought new in '11 and have had nothing but great service and good times from this machine (24,000) miles so far. For the money and this being your first one the '12 sounds like a good deal for you. As others have said, the '15 and '16 could have more positive changes to go for later.

I have a 2012 RTS with 29k great bike good year no problems I got it for the same price in nov 2012 you will love it

:welcome:

I would say go with the '12 or '14, or wait for the '15s, but avoid a '13. I haven't heard anything major about the '12s, except the heat on your right foot, and Spyderpops can help with that. From there it's just about what you want to spend.

I can't wait to hear what you decide. Of course, we want pics when you get it home!

2012 RT is a great bike based on my experience

:agree: with the other Spyderlovers !

The 2012 RT Limited was our first Spyder and was a very good bike. Very dependable, never stalled, no major issues at all. That would be a great "first" Spyder. I think the 2012 RT is a very solid machine which would provide you a great experience!

We elected to upgrade to a 2014 RT Limited only because of the newer engine/transmission combo (1330 CC triple / 6 Speed trans). We are at an age where we like the lower RPM of the 1330 triple and like cruising with less RPM's, vibrations, noise, etc. The 2014 RT is an AWESOME machine, but you will pay dearly for it vs. a used 2012 RT.

Good luck in your decision and welcome. :2thumbs: It's always good to do your homework before a major purchase!

:welcome: and :congrats: on your GREAT taste in motorcycles... :D
The 2012 is the best of the "litrebikes" for certain... It would carry you around the World and back if it was lucky enough to be bought by you.
But the 2014s really are in a completely different league...
You money, and your call... you really cannot go wrong! :2thumbs:

I will also chime in. The 2012 is considered the best of the pre 2014 :spyder2:'s. Seems to have the least of any problems--which were pretty minor on 2010 and 2011's.

Money wise, if you are getting your first :ani29: you can't go wrong with the 2012 for $19K.

Machine wise, the 2014 is pretty good--but I can understand not wanting to put out $30K for a new first ryde.

A test drive may help your decision. If you do test 2012/2014--you are going to note "big" differences. You will like the 2012 a lot--until you jump aboard a 2014.

We continue to keep our 2011 and are still very happy with it.

Actually; you can find a Base 2014 RT for less than $25,000
Depending on your horse-trading skills; you could close the gap even more!

Tough question..... I had a '13 , put 11k on it no problems....the '14s improvements trick me into upgrading this yr.....yes lost a few$$$$$ ....but the upgrades were worth it..I'd wait until fall got the '15s....then decide......

good luck ......and let's share some asphalt soon....

I have a 2012RTS-SE5, which I bought brand new 2 years ago, I have not had any major problems, I have 8,000 miles on it, and I love it.

You will love the 12RTS-SE5. I think the 2012 would be a good starter bike until you get use to the way the spyder handles, then maybe upgrade to the 2014RTS-SE6. Good luck on which ever Spyder that you choose.
