Congac Paint Questions

I am really interested in painting the lower rear fender on our 2014 RTL to match the bike and have a few questions I like to ask.

I have searched the site and came up with this discussion on color match;

but has anyone else used US Paints? How hard was it to spray and did the color cover well or does it need a Base Color? Also does anyone know what type of plastic the lower rear fender is made out of? I want to be sure to purchase the correct adhesion promoter.

Bob, I tried those Paint codes at two different Paint Dealers and neither one could cross reference to a formula? But thanks for trying, Lord know I need all the help I can get!

Get in touch with Mike or Denna about off the shelf color matched to the brp cognac. Dennas dash cover looks great :thumbup:

Yes, I'm sure BLUEKNIGHT911 found a very good duplicate of the cognac paint. Other have painted the lower fender with success. Hope someone that has done it comes forward with their process.

Nothing against Blueknight, but I personally think the color is too "Coppery" to be placed right next to a factory colored piece. With it separated by other panels it looks great. But remember all this is only my opinion.

Any one know what type of plastic the lower fender is made from?

And thanks for the compliment in sentence #2, it does look great....................As far as " coppery " goes, I think people who have actually seen it in person would dis-agree with that........After I painted Her Dash surround I placed it on the Frunk of the Spyder, and called Her out from the garage................She didn't notice it on the Frunk....:roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:...............................Mike :bbq:

Blueknight, thanks for the clarification on the color, I will look up your post to find the color you used and give it a try myself, it might be all in how the picture came out! Also Blueknight I do not remember if you posted what you did to treat the plastic so the paint would adhere. I will also search for that thread, Kent.

A non-perfect match could actually be cool for those who would inspect the paint job closely. As in "ranges" of Cognac.

Blueknight, thanks for the clarification on the color, I will look up your post to find the color you used and give it a try myself, it might be all in how the picture came out! Also Blueknight I do not remember if you posted what you did to treat the plastic so the paint would adhere. I will also search for that thread, Kent.

Kent, the finish paint is a High Heat paint for Metal......so used on plastic, the plastic needs to be Primed with a Paint designed to be used on Plastic....No PROMOTER is necessary.......Now if you want a Finish that more closely resembles the rest of the Spyder, you have a bit of work to do......Sanding the plastic smooth would take you forever.....However filling it in won't......This part should be off the Spyder to do this !!!.....Paint it with a FOR PLASTIC paint first, then get FILLER PRIMER PAINT,( get light red if possible ) this will need to be wet sanded to get a smooth finish, after you are happy you can start the color coat......The VHT is sort of translucent ( not quite ) and is tricky to use .....I would try it on scrap first, it is easy to have it SAG.......Use light coats and build it up....The key is after it is HARD DRY, applying 4 coats of CLEAR.....this will deepen the color - DRAMATICALLY......if you did this with OEM paint I think it would cost about $ 200.00 + --------- my way about $ 35.00...........Paint - VHT " Burnt Copper " SP402, most Auto Parts stores should sell this.........good luck.......Mike :bbq:

I used the same paint on my Spyder and it matches perfectly.

Thanks Blueknight for the info on the color and primer :thumbup:. I would very much like to keep the texture, but that is still to be determined. :dontknow:

Well that makes your job easier.....But understand - because you are painting a TEXTURED surface this will effect the way the color looks......Even a PRO painter using the OEM BRP paint would not get a PERFECT match because of the surface.......Ask a Pro, I think they will confirm this.................Mike :bbq:PS, you still need to PRIME the plastic......someone here didn't and it " alligatored " ......I'm still debating whether to do my rear :yikes:in white PEARL.

I won't suggest things unless I know they work !!!....But I personally have not used this Paint on that part...., However others have painted that PART with some success.......Exactly what paint they used I don't know, I don't recall them saying what it was .........I wouldn't be concerned about the flexing issue....I certainly wouldn't try twisting the bottom of the fender by hand to find out....But that is far more than anything that would occur normally......Mike :bbq:

Thanks for the reply and candor Blueknight, hope to pick up some paint this weekend ad give it a try on some scrap plastic I have laying around from other projects. I know it' not the same texture or composition of the fender, but it should give me a good representation of how the color will look.
