• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Concern. By way of stock security, what's to stop someone from pushing your spy away.

On my 2012 RSS, aside from locking the handlebars and putting a full cover on it. What's to stop someone from disengaging the parking brake and moving it??

Am I missing something?

If I stop and park it, put the Parking brake on, pull the key and walk away there seems to be nothing stoping someone from disengaging the parking brake and wheeling it away....(I'm sure they could break the steering lock).

Thx

I installed a Scorpio i900 security system on our Spyder. I only have the perimeter sensor enabled to activate if someone gets on or too close to it. Works great for keeping the kiddies off of it while unattended. It won't keep someone from taking it but if they do the Spyder won't go quietly.

For an SE5 you pose a valid point of concern

I would think with a manual, they'd have issue if you shut it down and left it in first gear, but if left in N & they disengaged the parking brake, I'm not sure what would stop them.

I know on the RTs, we have the electronic parking brake that can only be disengaged after using the key, but on an RS model, you have no such added safety factor that I'm aware of
:dontknow: Good point of question & I'm curious what other RS ryders have to say :hun:

I really don't know how easy it would be to break the steering lock but I do not recall a posting of someone breaking theirs. I'm not real worried about some stealing it but I did install a Gorilla alarm to keep people from pawing it. The alarm works well (after installing for second time).

Well, unlike a motorcycle, a Spyder is too heavy to simply lift up and throw into a van/pickup to steal. Though in the garage I simply disengage the parking brake, and rock it a little to get the SM5 into neutral to move it around; just like any other motorcycle. You could always throw a big chain and padlock around the wheel.

I read in our local paper last week that thieves had been stealing oil field equipment including 2 7/8" drill stem which comes in 30 foot lengths and weighs in the neighborhood of 10 pounds per foot. If thieves are willing to work that hard to steal something, there's nothing on earth you can do to secure a Spyder. I usually take the key out of mine when I park it. If it's convenient, I'll try to find a seat where I can see it if I'm in a restaurant or cafe. Otherwise, I don't worry about it.

If they want it they will take it..

Very unlikely... As mentioned above... Pawing it sitting on it putting their kids on it for photo shoots etc. is more of a problem. If the lock holds its circles for them and if you add a disk lock it would be unmovable. If they can get past that they are going to get it...

Since spyders are equipped with BRP DESS Digital Encoded Security System. A stolen spyder will only be good for parts and the owner should immediately inform a BRP dealer so that the details can be loaded on to the BRP computer. This is important because if someone brings the stolen spyder into a BRP dealership for reprogramming of a stolen spyder ,BUDS will deprogram the spyder and alert the dealer that the spyder is stolen. When spyders are hooked up to BUDS the owners name comes up on the BUDS computer.

Our local dealer found a stolen snowmobile when it got hooked up to BUDS.

Last week, after parking in my Underground Garage (Apt Bld) It had been moved

Last week, after parking in my Underground Garage (Apt Bld) It had been moved 2 spots over.

I had to entertain that I "MAY" have parked it in the wrong spot. However, the 2 spot difference was behind a dividing wall.

Spooked me A tad.

Or you could get one of those kryptonite chain locks and loop it through one of the a arms, and slap one of those "if you value your life as much as i value this spyder, then don't :cus: with it" stickers on the :spyder2:. :2thumbs:

If it is in gear you just push in the clutch and roll it away.

Wheel lock

I have a lock that goes on the brake rotor. Works fine. I also have a flag that aIput on the handle bars that says, "Renive Befire Fkught". So I don't try to drive off and mess up a wheel and brake rotor.

It will not help with people touching and seating but with moving it is a good thing. I had lojack installed. Lojack give you a little fob and it the bike is moved more then 10 feet without the fob being on the bike a signal is sent and lojack notifies you and an alternate via phone, text and if you want email. The only draw back that I have discovered is that lojack in not in all fifty states.

If memory is right (at my age?) there was a Spyder stolen from a trailer at the owners event in MV in 2011. The RT does have the electronic parking brake. When I park mine I always set the brake even in the garage. If I'm going to be away for some time as at the movies, I lock the steering as well.

Well, that certainly would be disconcerting! :yikes: I think I would get in the habit of using the steering lock. It's there and it's free. They can still roll your Spyder, though, although only in a circle. Finding it in the middle of an aisle would be even more upsetting. The best alternatives are a cable lock through the wheels or a rotor lock. Both will do your Spyder great harm if you accidentally forget they are there and try to ride off while they are still attached. I'd strongly recommend a lanyard (preferably bright colored) attached to the locking device and looped over your throttle grip as a reminder. Many rotor locks come with such a lanyard, but for the cable lock you would have to get inventive, unless you just got one long enough to loop over the seat or handlebars.
