• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

cold air vs fog light theory

I just installed some fog lights in Rons Spyder tonight and while I had it open I was looking at the path the air would have taken before I installed the fog lights.

If you notice the inside tube is right up next to the "hot" overfill bottle and only about half a tube is to open air. The fog lights or vent sit way outside of the path of the intake tubes so I don't see how that's going to get much cold air at all. If you see something I don't let me know.

now that this is your 2nd set that you put on were you able to do it any faster? is there hope for the other riders that want the dealer to do them? still waiting for down time to do mine. there still in the garage.

Lamont,
How did you fit the cool air exchangers in that tight squeeze?

I removed the snorkels when I installed the Evoluzione air filter... I'm thinkin' that might make it easier to attach some duct direct to the airbox... whether routed to the fog light opening or external scoop.
BTW, did you route ducting from both scoops to the airbox, or is one a dummy?

Damn... I'm retired and I have less time to play than you do!

I think what you may be overlooking is the overall effect of the cooler air entering the engine compartment through the fog light holes. It has to help keep things cooler in the engine compartment, which will help things run better.

It just might be that with that really closed in engine compartment, that the cold air vent you added on the lefthand side is helping as much as the one that vents into the airbox.

Just a thought.

The only way to know for sure would be to Dyno before and after installing the fog lights.

Not siding with booglasti just because we are up here in Michigan, but what is missing from the photo is the stock air inlet with the extended diverter that puts the airflow only about 4"-5" away from the snorkels. If you shine a light in the stock airflow opening you can see how the diverter directs the air to the snorkel. I agree that completing that path with duct would ensure the best airflow, but the real issue is once fog lamps are installed, you really have reduced whatever fresh air flow you did have.

What exactly is the purpose of fog lights? I never use the ones on my cars. It would seem that cooler air would be more advantageous than fog lights. Unless you're in The Midwest or Northeast.

coldair ducts

OK,looked atthe same area that the duct work has to rout thru.To make it correct and fit well it looks like the snorkel has to be trimmed abit.I took measurements and the 2 routes are either thru the top(like Lamonts)or the bottom right side under neath the front airdam. So,went to the local speed shop and purchased an airram sys. that was for VW dunebuggies, the kind thats mounted on the body at the roof line. The pickup scoop will look good and the inlet is large enough to pull in some serious air.The ground clearence is fair but it is an experiment only.Anyway, cut down the tubing and snaked it around everything and trimmed the snorkel somewhat.Used hose clamps and as an addition sealed the edges of the aircleaner w/ducttape.Started it up and you could HEAR the air being sucked in fm the bottom scoop.Only got to drive it for 60 mi. but there is a difference.BIG DIFFERENCE!Having problems keeping the duct in contact w/the snorkel.Cheated and ducttaped the s**t outta it and IT WORKED GREAT!Still experimenting w/the whole setup.

The whole idea of the fog lights is to be more visible to cagers - I aimed my fog light up to match the hight of my hi-beams for daylight driving so I guarantee oncoming traffic can see me coming.

It still took me way too long. The dealer that installed the frontend stripped out a bolt and that took some extra time and I spent a little more time really looking at all the cables and such to see if you could go longer on the risers. I also did a little shock work so I still had a good 4 hours into the thing. :opps:

sounds like a good idea!

Take any pics??

another option is to reduce the air temp in the engine compartment. i wrapped my exhaust and the air temp in the engine compartment was reduced significantly.

coldair update

From the previous thread i've updated my mod for the coldair ram.The scoop fm the dunbuggy setup was way too large for the bottom of the spyder.Had to streamline it somewhat as it sometimes bottomed out on small bumps on the road.My 15yo son made a recomendation and showed me the wide pattern scoop fm a gas leaf blower and the diameter was 5" across and 2.5" deep.Had to taper it down to fit the 3" duct but the clearence was better.Hooked up and went for a ride,30mi.to work and it WORKED GREAT!!!Lamont is on to something,I got total performance satisfaction fm this mod and the motor really delivers terrific low and top end power.Along w/the pipes wrapped and the engine compartment being cooler, the airram is a simple and easy mod.If you want to try it in a quik and simple manner, just run 3"dryer duct fm the snorkel to the outside of the spyder and go for a short ride .Afew blocks will convince you to do this.:2thumbs::chat:

Might want to watch having it mounted that low. In addition to possible bottom-out issues, you'll get more dust, dirt, rain, etc from down there.

Might want to put a pre-filter inline and some wire mesh to catch anything big!

More lights = better seen (plus it does make your spyder look more like a spider) :spyder:

Just got back from about a 80 mile ride after taking off the o2 modifier and the Spyder is still running great. I'll do a plug reading but forsure I was running a little rich before. That cold air intake really did wake this ride up. :doorag:
