• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

WilcoJunoHotel—My brake light switch went out at about 9000 miles as well. Replaced the switch myself and it was good to go. There is a new part number for that item, so I’m guessing that a problem was identified! I also have the 2020 RTL. When I took the switch out, there was metallic dust on the actuator rod. Hope that helps!

Thanks. My buddy who was riding behind me on Friday explained what my brake lights were doing - in your thread above you quoted:
My switch failed in a bizarre way. If I pushed lightly on the brake pedal, the brake lights would flash one time extremely fast. Think like an old flash bulb. If I continued pressing harder, the brake lights would come on and stay on while held. If I pressed even harder, they would go off and stay off.

This is exactly what he said mine were doing.

As and update, yesterday while on my way to my car in my garage to run some errands, I pressed down on the brake pedal on my Spyder and got no brake lights at all. When I returned from my errand, I turned the bike on and still no brake lights.

Today I am going to get it up in the air and see what I can find but it sound like a switch failure like yours. My bike has right at 10K on the odo so it starting doing the VSS error thing around 9400 miles.

We were going to stop for a beer on the way home Friday but I opted out because of the VSS error and I am glad I did because we would have been 1 hour driving after dark in heavy traffic which could have been very dangerous for me not having any brake lights!

Can you or Jetfixer please confirm the part number for our 2020RT is 710005480 - SWITCH BRAKE, $39.99 ?

I will call round tomorrow and see if I can find one and change it myself rather than bother with a warranty repair ordeal.

Thanks.

Sooooo, I got it up in the air today and took a look see.

When I depressed the brake pedal I got no brake lights. I tried to manually move the plunger of the switch and I got an intermittent brake light: Not every time and the light was never on solid - it flickered.

Looks like the switch is bad and has to be replaced.

As someone else noted, the switch itself is easy to remove from the mounting bracket (24mm open wrench) but the wiring harness connector is way up inside the plastic so most of the body panels need to come off to get to the connector and the 2 zip blocks that secure the wires. I had to remove the 3 body panels that are fairly easy to remove but got stymied by the big black piece so I wound up just removing enough screws and push-pins to where I could pull the panel away enough for me to get my hands and arms down in there. I used a couple of wood blocks wedged in there to hold it away while I unplugged the connector and cut the zip ties. Note: The wiring connector has a little clip inside where the red tab is held - you have to use a small screwdriver to depress it away from the red tab otherwise it is never coming off.

I am guessing they put that connector way up high to keep water away from it put they failed to make the switch itself "element proof" as it is fairly obvious that water and crud caused mine to fail - see pics.

The part number of the one I took off is 710005480 and that is the number the parts fiche is still showing so if someone has the new part number please advise so that I can make sure I get the most current one as I don't want to have to keep changing this every 9K miles. Maybe if I call my local dealer tomorrow they will advise me of the new part number.:dontknow:

Thanks.

Brake Light Switch part # 710005480 has been superseded by Part # 710008326. I paid $38.99. They are in very short supply right now, like most other things. Your local dealer has the ability to search other dealers to see who actually has one. I bought mine from Motomember in Purcellville, VA. At the time they had two in stock. If you want to contact them, ask for Russell at 703-552-9988

Found the switch (PN 710008326) locally (Atlanta area) but it appears to be the only one on the shelf in the south US. Can Am has them in Quebec but a 2-3 week wait, possibly longer due to holidays etc.

Looks the same as the old one so I'm guessing they changed the innards and/or beefed up the seal.

EDIT: Added a couple of pics of old one and new one. Only external change that I can see is the threads are finer pitch on the new one.
