Clutch recall problems and how to fix

Ok I see there are some posts on Clutch recalls where people are now having issues. Here are the common causes.

1-If your machine now creeps in gear and at a stop it could be a few things. A- the outer clutch (friction) plate was installed in the wrong position. This plates tabs are inserted in the shorter slots of the clutch basket. If its mounted with the other friction plates the clutch can make noise and also cause it to creep. B- The disk spring must be installed with the concave side towards the pressure plate. If not the spring can cause the clutch to malfunction and not disengage.

2-If your machine revs goofy on down shift (higher than normal RPM). This is almost 99% because the clutch release shaft wasn't tightened down.

One thing for sure is if the recall was done properly you will be happy. If your not and its doing wierd stuff then the procedure wasn't followed and it needs taken apart. This is a simple job but it does require certain steps to be followed in a certain order. The procedure is nearly 20 pages long

Jeff,
Could you clone yourself and ship the copies to several dozen dealers throught the continent? :D Lots of them could use your expertise! Thanks again for the valuable information you provide.

Waiting to hear more of your post :2thumbs:

Jeff, like the other guys say, we could sure use more of you!
I do have a question, after the clutch recall it seems like there is now a noticeable pause when shifting up. Is this a result of the recall? It's kinda anoyying.

Thanks
Dwight

Is this for all years?

Just for 2010 SE5 models.. as for issues shifting after recall there should be none. If done properly shfting should be smooth and you should have a little more torque down low. If not then something wasn't done right. The above items in the post are things we know that have been done wrong but the bottom line is it needs looked at and have the dealer (yourself also) test ride the unit against a new unit (that has the updated clutch) to varify your issues. Duplication is critical to proper diagnostic as there could be some other problem. These units have a lot of sensors that can be of issue, however most of the time you would get a chk eng flash on the meter but not 100%.

My concern is the clutch vibration that was not there before. Seems to be more prevalent when your first start riding, before it warms up good.

John,
I would have the dealer take it back apart and go through the procedure again. Vibration can indicate the outter friction plate is in the wrong place. Let me ask you this: Does it make noise, creep or shift hard manually? How much vibration, if it chatters then something is loose.

Does not make any loud noise, however the vibration could be chatter. Have not had any creeping . It does shift hard at lower speeds. Feels like it is out of balance. Have had it not shift on command and cause serious hesitation on acceleration . Mechanic who did the recall noticed the low speed shifting issue but thought it would be ok.

John, I think your clutch release shaft isn't tight. This requires pulling the clutch back apart and checking it. Important to not ride it like this because it will fry your clutch in short order, :cus: @$%!!! not good

Thanks Jeff, I don't have much confidence in this dealerships maintenance . Unfortunately in this area the other dealerships are about as bad. I bought my RT-S at one dealership and 2009 SE-5 at another. Just hope by luck I get it fixed, generally it comes back with more problems from what they supposed to fix. Really appreciate your help.

One thing you can do is contact BRP customer relations and ask them where the closest certified roadster technician is. This could be a big help even if you have to drive a bit. Also, if taken to another dealer and the clutch was installed wrong you would want that dealer to call BRP first to make sure its logged and varify they will cover the work under warranty. If not you may be forced to take it to the dealer who did the recall. I know it a hastle but just don't want you to get an even shorter end of the stick.
