Clutch issues on 2011 RTS SE5

Took delivery of my new RTS on Tuesday and had some fantastic times getting used to it and put about 40 miles on it. Next morning road to work, then ran a couple of errands. Noticed after reversing back out of a parking space and shifting to first that it hestated on take off. Drove about 1/2 mile to put gas in it and after the fillup the brake system indicator was flashing and while it went into gear it would not move until I reved it up.

Called the dealer, and must have talked to the wrong tech, no help at all. A bit in a fluster since my new toy was broken. Decided to see if I could get it to go at least to move it to a safe place. Got 300 feet and dead in its tracks. Would not roll, clutch would engage but it would not move. Had it towed to the dealer and now they are saying it needs a new clutch. The dealer is still working on the diagnosis, but initially says it appears that it was caused my riding it with the parking break engaged.

Any suggestions on this issue would be greatly appreciated. I did not think it was even possible to go with the PB engage. Sounds like a similar issue to what I found in the forums on the 2010 but nothing on the 2011.

Honestly I think we need more info to do a seat of the pants diagnostic. But from what you described, it is possible. But I would lean more towards a Brake issue as damage than I would the clutch...

Question... How long did you leave the brake on? Is it that half mile? Performance should have been HORRID, and you would have noticed.

Weird things can happen. I know from other horror stories on the 2010's that if you did not place a certain spacer in the correct position (During a Clutch repair on the SE5's) that the entire assembly would begome a pile of trash and a lot of costs to correct...

If the parking brake light was flashing when you tried to move, that means that the brake was engaged, and you may have burned the clutch because of it. The dealer should have explained this to you instead of taking it for granted that you would know.

Sounds like you were driving with the parking break engaged.

When I was early into owning my RT in March this year I tried to reverse out of my garage with the PB on. I only went a few feet but in that short distance I learned my lesson. It shuddered and shaked and I had to use a lot of throttle. After I'd done it I felt like an idiot, but a relieved idiot cos I didn't cause any damage, except to my self esteem. :sour:

Interesting none of those things happened. It hesitated after I shifted to 1st and gave is some juice but then it picked up just fine. Thanks for the info.

I'd appreciate it if you would keep us in the loop on what they find and on a personal level I'd be interested in what you think of your dealership response. I ride a CSC Goldwing trike and my wife is selling her Goldwing to buy a RT. I'm looking for a dealership that I can trust to do the maintenance and get a good price on the the trike. I see you're in the southbay area so I'm guessing you went to Del Amo Motosports in Torrance. I've been monitoring this site for the last couple of months so I can get up to speed on the Spyders and I must say some of the problems with the product do give me pause. Again, I'd appreciate hearing the outcome and what you think of the shop.

Like others, I have forgotten to take off the parking brake and there was significant resistance to movement. Hope they get you up an running again soon.

Right now the dealership is being very helpful. It seems that BRP is the holdup. And the service manager is trying to replicate the issue as well given the circumstances. It may be that the PB was not fully releasing.

We shall see what happens, and I will keep folks in the loop.

Parking brake on our 2010 RT SM5 won't even let me think of moving. I think, if the brake is properly adjusted. it should be a tight lock, otherwise the Spyder can roll freely if it is an SE5. If that is the case, that it was not tight enough, then I think the dealer needs to eat this one because the Spyder was not set up properly.

GM of dealer as well as SM called yesterday in concern about mypost. I have read on several forums what a pain BRP can be about warrantee repairs, and that seems to be playing itself out. At this point I give the dealer an 8 and BRP a lower score. Don't understand why it takes more than a day or so to resolve an issue on a put put with 50 miles on it. Final scores will be posted if I am able to feel the wind in my face when I return from a week in Seattle. :yes:

Got a call from dealer last monday all repairs will be under warranty. :2thumbs: It will be 3-5 days on the parts.

Called today to check status, another 3-5 days on the parts:dontknow: Dealer looses at least a point for giving bad info. BRP loses another point for parts availability. Unless I found out I was lied to, :lecturef_smilie:

It would seem that a part shortage has hit BRP. My repairs have now been postponed for another week. I am not a happy camper since I had to cancel a trip to Oregon with the bike still in the shop Looks like I will get to make my first payment on a put put that has spent most of its life being repaired.

Not off to a happy start with my :spyder2:
