I have a 2008 GS SM5. 50,126KM ( about 30,000+ miles)
The bike is serviced regularly by the dealer.
I have seen this before on this forum, but it always said the engine warning light.
Well, mine is not the engine warning light.
On my speedometer dash, the warning reads: CHECK ENGINE. This only comes on it seems when I have been driving on the
highway and the bike is really hot, just after I gas up, within a couple of seconds.
I pull into the gas pumps, shut engine off, fill with high test fuel, come back out, turn engine on, pull away, and sometimes I pull
over and park, shut engine off, and then go into pay, come out restart engine and get back on the highway. Within a couple of seconds
there it is. CHECK ENGINE comes across the speedometer.
I pull over to the side, shut the engine off, wait about 30 seconds, pull out the key, then put the key back in, re-start the engine
and no more check engine on the speedometer.
When I am riding around town, or the engine is not that hot, I do not get this warning across my speedometer when I gas up.
I called the dealer, and was told I needed a new gas cap, so I bought one, $16.00 + tax. He told me it should not happen
again. He also told me that there was a recall on the model in 2008 about the gas cap. I showed him the one that was on
it, and on it it had a sticker that said - Mexico -.He said that it was never replaced with the new gas cap. It is now.
Has anyone had this problem before. I know it's an old bike, 8 years old, but runs well.
I had this same problem on my car, and the gas cap solved the problem.
Any ideas or info from anyone would be appreciated. And thank you in advance for your advice. You guys are great
