There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Check Engine across spedo screen

I have a 2008 GS SM5. 50,126KM ( about 30,000+ miles)

The bike is serviced regularly by the dealer.

I have seen this before on this forum, but it always said the engine warning light.

Well, mine is not the engine warning light.

On my speedometer dash, the warning reads: CHECK ENGINE. This only comes on it seems when I have been driving on the
highway and the bike is really hot, just after I gas up, within a couple of seconds.

I pull into the gas pumps, shut engine off, fill with high test fuel, come back out, turn engine on, pull away, and sometimes I pull
over and park, shut engine off, and then go into pay, come out restart engine and get back on the highway. Within a couple of seconds
there it is. CHECK ENGINE comes across the speedometer.

I pull over to the side, shut the engine off, wait about 30 seconds, pull out the key, then put the key back in, re-start the engine
and no more check engine on the speedometer.

When I am riding around town, or the engine is not that hot, I do not get this warning across my speedometer when I gas up.

I called the dealer, and was told I needed a new gas cap, so I bought one, $16.00 + tax. He told me it should not happen
again. He also told me that there was a recall on the model in 2008 about the gas cap. I showed him the one that was on
it, and on it it had a sticker that said - Mexico -.He said that it was never replaced with the new gas cap. It is now.

Has anyone had this problem before. I know it's an old bike, 8 years old, but runs well.

I had this same problem on my car, and the gas cap solved the problem.

Any ideas or info from anyone would be appreciated. And thank you in advance for your advice. You guys are great

CHECK ENGINE

Glad that worked for you .........But after 125,000 Km. you should have realized by now how touchy the computers are on our Spyders. I had an 08 GS that regularly lit up like a Christmas tree, but Only went to LIMP mode once ( on a 106 degree day ) and then cleared itself and never re-occurred.......................Mike

I only had the limp mode come on once, just after I bought it. Nothing since then.

It can't be your gas cap causing the problems you describe. You could drive without a gas cap and the Spyder wouldn't know any difference. Not recommended by the way. It is not the same as some cars that can detect an air leak. If it happens again get the fault code and that should lead to a more specific problem. The gas cap replacement recall was for gas fumes leaking past the cap.

With ignition switch on (or engine running) press MODE button repeatedly until "engine hours" (total hours) shows on display.
Press and hold MODE button while pushing the "flash high beams" button five times within 2 seconds.
If there are no active faults "No Active Fault Code" will be displayed.
If there is an active fault, an alphanumeric code will be displayed.
If there is more than one active code, you may press MODE to cycle through them.

I had the exact same scenario play out on the way home today! It was hot, like 96°, and after I filled the tank the Check Engine light came on and the bike went into limp home mode. I pulled into a shady spot and turned off the engine, restarted it, and drove home with no further problems.
Weird.

Last october we started our 6 state ride, went to the gas station, gassed up, started the Spyder and the limp home mode came on, shut the spyder off, re started it and rode away, did 3600 miles and the limp mode never returned

Gs 2008

My 2008 GS would give me a check engine light too, after a hard ride on the freeway, or after a gas fill up on long rides also. Never had a limp home. It would always reset on the next restart. I road for 3 years with the check brake light on. Just make sure your brake fluid level is topped off.

There was a recall for the gas cap back in Jan 2013. The replacement also had "Made in Mexico" written on it at the time so that's not the best check. The recall ones have a habit sticking on after a couple of years use so I'd actually recommend replacing it with a Stant gas cap at some point - I use the Stant 10819 but I believe others also fit - also has "Made in Mexico" on it:-)

One thing - as it was a recall your dealer shouldn't have charged you for the replacement. Even if a bikes out a warranty a recall is a recall and entitles you to free replacement of the recall parts and labour (not that replacing a gas cap takes much labour:-)).

However I like others here think it may not be the gas cap. I've had exactly the same problem you describe once after filling up on a hot day with a hot Spyder. So I pulled over, turned off, pulled the key for ten seconds, turned on still had the message. Swore, repeated the process and it was absolutely fine after that.

I also started to get a petrol smell after a ride so I did the Canisterectomy . That may be worth considering if you've also noticed that problem. You'll find plenty of notes on how to do this on this site but in the following thread I did post some photos etc:
http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?92204-Air-filter-box

Not had the problem since - but then again only had it once before I made the change.
