These are IMHO the best there is out there and the only chargers we use. :2thumbs: (we have 8 of these units in service)

They turned out to work so well we now sell them ourselves.

If you need more information on these chargers we'd be glad to answer your questions, just give us a call.

Hey guys. Just wanted to thank you again for your replies on this topic. I dropped by the local dealer today and picked up the Battery Tender Jr. for a good price.

Cheers and thank you again, everyone!

One reason why I like Battery Tender chargers is that they prevent a spark from occuring when attaching or removing them from your battery. There may be other chargers as well that have this safety feature.

I had a car battery explode in my face while giving a jump start with my patrol car. If it were not for a helpful nearby business owner, who rushed me into his store and flushed me with water, I might have been blinded. Jump starting and charging batteries can be very dangerous !

Just an update:

This morning at about 11am, I connected (after reading the charger and Spyder manual), the Battery Tender Jr. to my Spyder's battery. It started up with a SOLID RED light, indicating it was CHARGING.

I noticed at about 4pm, 5 hours after I connected it the light had moved to a FLASHING GREEN light, indicating it was more then 80% at that time.

Cheers.

another update ;).

Got a solid green light on the battery tender now, after 7 hours of charging. So now it is charged and being monitored.

Not promoting or demoting, first I have tried one. :dontknow: So far so good.

My reasons on this one, automatic & it will cover the cage batteries also.
This scares me. Selecting the wrong charging rate could ruin a motorcycle battery in a heartbeat. Anything over 2 amps will sulphate a bike battery or blow the lead out of the "plates". Even less can damage a smaller battery than the Spyder. Best to have one that is error-proof, IMO.

Thank you for your reply, John. So you think the MotoMaster Trickle Battery Charger in my first post is not a good choice for charging the Spyder battery?

thanks

I have I think it is the battery tender plus...go with that or the jr...get it on amazon and it's quite affordable...I keep my bike hooked up all the time...the leads are attached to the battery so no need for alligator clips...just unplug and go...pop up the seat and plug back in when you're home.

I know there are other options, but the battery tender is used by many here and it does a really good job...not too expensive either...

Yep, I have the Battery Tender Jr. It charges at .75amp by the look of it, and I'm happy with it so far. I've used it only once, but will put her on charge again tonight - I was riding today.

Cheers and thanks for the useful comments, everyone.

Battery tender Jr with a female cigar lighter socket running out from the battery to the passenger hand grip. Male plug soldered to the lead off the tender.

Had all kinds of battery trouble with my Honda VT1100T with it's weird T shaped battery...saw a Kureakyn LED battery gauge and wired it in, gluing it to dashboard for piece of mind

Groundeffect: Don't let anyone rag on you for being over zealous (me included :D). There's nothing wrong with asking questions and wanting to understand more then the average owner... I for one am enjoying your excitement both in the early anticipation and then in finally owning your Spyder, and in your attempts to learn as much as you can about it.

Keep it up and RIDE!

Battery Tender Plus here.

Thanks for your note. Looks like the Battery Tender Plus has a couple more features over the Battery Tender Jr., one being "Temperature compensated to ensure optimum charge voltage according to ambient temperature". Interesting.

I've been using my BTJ for the last week or so and it seems to be working out great. I like it! After the first day of charging (4-7 hours), now I get a solid green light (monitoring) about 5 mins after I reconnect in the evenings after riding.

I suspect it will be on there for the next 4-5 days, as it calls for snow and freezing rain :(.

Cheers
