• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Changing GPS prior to Durango trip.

MOgang Member & Monster Member,
Preface: I'm not interested in carrying a separate device. I know the dedicated GPS units probably perform better, but I like to only have to keep up with one device. The iPhone.

Up until recently, I have been happy with AT&T Navigator. But lately it has been taking me to some crazy places and I have lost faith in it and will cancel the subscription.

I don't mind paying for the right App or even paying for a subscription is fine.

I've been doing some research and here are the best apps I have found. There may be others that I need to investigate and that is where I am asking help from iPhone or other smartphone users.

In no particular order:
Navigon
MotionX
iGoMyWay
TomTom
Garmin

Of these, Navigon and MotionX are getting high reviews. As is iGoMyWay.

Does anyone out there use these or recommend others????

Do any of these allow you to pick your route? I know most have avoid highways but sometime you want to do a little of both and I haven't found anything (free) that does that.

Navigon is the best of any gps I've used. Love it

I knew you had posted about one that worked well for you, but I couldn't find the post. There are a few negative reviews in the app store, but several independent evaluations rank it highly. And with all the travels you do, if it works for you, it should be good for me! I think I'll give Navigon a shot. If I'm unhappy with that I can always try something else! Just about anything will be an improvement over AT&T Navigator.

The one thing that bothers me is that apparently Garmin bought Navigon, and most of the bad reviews relate to V2.0 after the Garmin purchase. Still gonna try it and will post results.

I use Tom Tom with four wheels and love it. Seldom use GPS on bike however I have used Google Nav on my droid with good luck and like hearing the commands in the headsets.

Does this mean I have to "reorient" my map,( make sure it's north and south?)AND get all the folds going the right direction???:roflblack::roflblack: So far I haven't had any map put me in the wrong place!!!:dontknow: I however, Have gotten messed up with the wrong road signs!!:opps:;) That are hard to see going by at 55 mph!!!:lecturef_smilie: BUT!!! just think, I never would have seen that part of the country if I hadn't taken a wrong turn.:opps: :roflblack:

I just started using Motion X. For $9.99 a year it does voice. The app will also allow you to listen to your music library and will interrupt it when a turn is coming up. So far I'm liking it but haven't gotten too deep into it---couldn't tell you if it allows different routings.

Motion X gets my vote

Tried Navigon..never could get it to work..Lamont and others say it is great..the only great I got fr it was frustration :banghead:..my absolute favorite is getting Personal Service by talking to people..

If you don't mind the GPS to decide by itself where to route you, there are a few option on the iPhone.

If you want to be able to customize the route to force it to use the roads that you want to be on, the choices are few.

I am using ALK CoPilot live on my iPad, which I leave in the trunk and connect to the iPod cable. It allows me to customize my itinary before I go. It is definitely not perfect, but at the time, it seemed to be the best option for custom routes. (Although I do not know how good is the user interface on the smaller iPhone screen)

Let me know if you consider it and would like more pros and cons.

Decision criterias

One thing you also need to decide is if you need the maps to be onboard, or if it is ok to use a server based system such as Motion X (meaning it works as long as you are within cell phone coverage, and if you data plan is sufficient to accomodate the maps download)

I know in my area, you can get outside of cell phone coverage in some places. Google maps or Motion X would not be good options in my case.

Yep. This was a concern as it has happened to me before. I went with Navigon and just spent quite a bit of time actually downloading the maps to the device as I want them available when there is no service. I plan on testing it this week to see how it does in comparison to AT&T Navigator.
