CHAD Windshield - Helmet Buffeting - HELP!

I'm 5'10". I cannot find a position to eliminate head buffeting! Gives me a headache after a long ride. If I lean down it goes away.

Anyone else have this problem?

I looked at SAENG Micro Swirl but the reviews on this product are mostly unsatisfactory.

Can't find a Laminar Lip that looks like it might work on the CHAD.

I'm thinking about going back to the old reliable BRP Touring shield. I was hoping to find a shield that would give me some air while at the same time eliminate head buffeting!!

Any ideas?

P.S. Have already tried two F1's and they are not an option.

I am 6ft and with it back all the way and raked halfway up I get no buffeting at all. A little wind noise in my flip up helmet but that's all. :dontknow:

I found with the evoIII buffeting as well... I am 6'2" and went with a Rifle and they added 3 inches to their largest shield... It working great, no buffeting and have a quiet pocket, and I do get a little breeze as well.

Let me ask you this - if you flip your shield on your helmet up does the buffeting go away?

I know I get more helmet noise with my full face helmet closed up as opposed to flipping the shield all the way up. Since I have the inside sun visor, I often ride with the outer shield all the way up.

Hate to say it, but maybe try a different helmet if the shield 'up' test seems to reduce buffeting.

i don't have the answer

Yo Hevnbound,
I do not have an answer for you but if the CHAD doesn't do it for you when all is said and done, I would consider buying it from you. I am five foot, seven. I presently have the EvoIII slider and like it but I'm thinking of something for the colder weather. But the easiest thing would be if you can get it to work for you. I like to hear positive stories about the CHAD. :spyder:

I'm real surprised at that. No buffeting at all for either 5'2" Nancy or 6'0" me with the CHAD, except maybe in cross winds. Not even bad there. We have the 1" riser and stock seat. With the shield about 1/3 up with no added rake, the position is fine for Nancy, but I get a little wind noise if I sit real straight to help my back. With about 1/4 added rake, It works for me, too. Have not tried other positions. I hope you find a solution. You are the first that ever said the BRP sport touring shield was better. Good luck, but if it doesn't work out, I'm sure you can find a buyer.

Thanks for posting this I am 5'10 also and looking for a new windshield to replace the stock one. I have a sport/touring one coming and will try that first.

:agree: Are you getting some wind noise or buffeting? I have some noise, which is louder with my shield closed, but it is not bad compared to the stock shield or my other shield. I've had no buffeting w/ the CHAD. I'm 5-7

I'm 5'10" too and after trying a couple of taller windshields I went with the BRP Ultra Sport. No noise, no buffeting on my head because the buffeting is below the neck. Only problem I have is holding on when riding 70mph into a 50mph wind :yikes:.

But I'm a fair-weather rider, so I'm not looking for rain protection...

I have the F1 slider and I get too much noise because of my 4" risers. I have been debating between the CHAD and the F1 Queen. I don't really like the looks of either but now that several have commented on the noise I will most likely go with the Queen....

I'm 6'8" and have a chad. Still tweeking with the correct angle. I also noticed that if I flip up my visor, most of the buffeting goes away.

Maybe the new Ultra Touring model from BRP

I'm also 5' 10''

I'm waiting for some reviews on the BRP's windshield before I make my dicission. good luck,

Maybe lower your seat cusion somehow like others have done :dontknow:

Thanks for all the suggestions and statements. If I lean forward the buffeting goes away. I have NMN 4" risers so that might explain a lot?!

One idea given I haven't tried is a different helmet. That's the only reasonable explanation as to why some have no problems and others do? I'll let you know when I try it out. I have a HJC Carbon fiber full-face I usually don't use when I'm on the Spyder. I'll give it a try. Also have a Shark Evoline coming that I found on Adv Riders which I should have next week and will give it a try. I've been riding with the HJC Symax.

I get the most buffeting when the shield is up. Much less when the shield is down. One reason I purchased the CHAD is I had been told you can ride with the shield up .... really doesn't work for me!!!

You are the first that ever said the BRP sport touring shield was better.-Scotty

Didn't mean to imply that the touring shield was better; very little weather protection, loud, neck gets tired, etc. However, no head buffeting and good clean air. One SpyderLover PM'd me and summed up my feelings on the CHAD so far as making you feel like the scene in Right Stuff where Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier!!roflmao

Scotty,

No jokes today.

I have the CHAD also and have it all the way forward and up. It has reduced buffeting about 80%. I'm 5' 10"; would there be any reason to rake back or lower it? Isn't all the way forward and up the position for the least amount of buffeting? I know depending on your height you may be looking through the shield instead of over it. Actually, when I'm doing 65 or below I notice buffeting at the elbows. Once I hit 70 or above there is some head buffeting.

Me too! It must be the helmet.

I have the HJC Symax II, a modular flip-up, for about a year. At 5'7", the wind hits just above my eyebrows ( with my Cal-Sci windshield ) and on the expressway at time the helmet really has a LOT of buffeting going on - especially if it is also windy. The helmet is also noisy. While I liked it at first, and it worked well with my glasses, I am getting so I hate putting it on.
Let us know how the new helmets work.

Tom

I have the HJC Carbon Fiber helmet and I love it. I t may be a bit noisy, I don't really have much to compare it with, but it is so light, I don't get a neck ache or headache after long days of riding like I did with my GMax28.

I think that bringing the top of the windshield toward the rider (raked back) can improve the wind protection for some riders in some circumstances by changing the airflow around the windshield.

One reason that I think that everyone can have a different experience with all these different windshields is that no two people are physically the same. Even two people at 5'8" tall can be different in so many ways (120 lbs vs. 220 lbs, short torso vs. long torso, narrow shoulders vs. wide shoulders, long arms vs. short arms, S helmet size vs. XXL helmet size, etc.) Being your entire body is still out in the wind, everything about a person's body can affect the way they sit on the Spyder and the way the airflow moves around them.
