Is eliminating the cat converter legal in California? If not, what kind of "punishment" can I expect? Any ideas?

There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I assume that California does equipment-checks on motor vehicles...
Do they also test emissions? :dontknow:

Do they (DMV) require anual or bianual inspections or motorcycle smog checks. Not yet.
Will they at some point in time? Most smog station Owners will tell you they are not equipped to test motorcycles. So, we should know well in advance if they ever decide to implement a program.
That said, most MC dealers will not assist in removing any emissions equipment. The fines and penalties that can be levied against them are to onerous.

I don't like it, but there is too much uncertainty for me to remove it. I guess I could move, but I would have to pack...and after living in this house for 25 years, I have too much stuff.

Well; (This is completely your call...) If you did install a bypass kit; just keep the converter "around", in case you sell the bikes, or a warranty issue pops up, and it needs to become "stock" again...

Take a look at the first model Spyders that are out there ridding around
If they have an aftermarket exhaust then they have no cat
They had the cat in the factory exhaust
That was one of the fist things I took off my 2008 GS
rode it for 6 years next to CHP and all and was never stopped for it
Even when I got a ticket for speeding I was never Questioned about the loud exhaust
I will be removing the cat from the new 2014 RTL as soon as I can

New Harleys have a CAT. I forget the year they started and don't really feel like digging through the manuals to find the info, but they definitely do now. On the other manufacturers just about, if not, all FI bikes have a CAT.

I know the federal EPA busted a friend of mine a few years ago for removing his catalytic converter and was fined $5,000, it was third offence. They told him next time it will be $10,000 and up to five years in jail.

If its an individual, he must have parked outside the EPA building in DC with a billboard on top stating "The EPA can kiss my .... and my cat converter is already gone...What ya gonna do?
