Carrying a golf bag??

I guess the bicycle carrying system has hope! :2thumbs: Thanks!!

Yes, before I ran across the one I have, I was trying to figure out how to convince my wife that the RT hitch was a great idea so that I could have the ball mount you linked. I think the trip to Spyderfest has convinced her that more is better (funny how 7 hours in the rain will make you think packing lightly is not such a good idea), but it'll still probably be a while, so I'll just enjoy this one until we make the move to the system. Maybe we'll pick up a trailer at the next Spyderfest...

I wonder how a bike rack would work on top of that?

Thanks Guys!! Lots of good ideas. The trailer deal might be alright for long trips, but I'm looking for somethingeasy to put on and take off and for one up riding. I noe have several good ideas along w/ whatever stevemac comes up with so I'm pretty enthused. Bottom line is that the job seems immenintly doable which keeps my thoughts of a spyder in play for me. Now I'll have to look towards deciding between the 2 models. Do they sit?? significantly different?? Are you hunched forward considerably more with the rs than the rt. My elbows and wrists were never sportbike friendly and I always gravitated towards "standards" as opposed to cruisers or sport bikes because I found them much easier on me ergonomically. Hopefully I'll get to sit on both of them before too long.

My best suggestion is too simply go ride both of them. I LOVE the look of the RS and saw some mods in Cuba that make it more comfortable for long trips. The stock RS does put your riding posture more into the sport bike position. However, I chose the RT because I do ryde two up very often, and my wife is simply more comfortable on the RT. Frankly so am I. So while I wish the RT had a little more of the RS sporty look, I ended up going with the touring comfort of the RT. Not that the RT isn't a fantastic looking machine mind you! :ohyea:

I also chose the manual tranny because I love shifting those gears!

Have fun making your selection. I wish I had found this site before I purchased mine. There are some very knowledgeable folks on here. :chat:

Giving a little bump here. Just wanted to let you all know that I have all the parts ready to begin assembly. And I got the OK from a buddy of mine to allow me to use his MIG welder this weekend.

I am going to do something that may make the engineers here cringe.

I am going to cut a wedge out of the BRP hitch and level it out. I don't like the way it tails off following the line of the swingarm, so I am going to "mod" it, cut the wedge out with a cutoff wheel, leaving the bottom of the hitch still intact, then pull it up the 1/2 to 3/4 inches to level it out and mount the golf bag, as well as the luggage/cooler carrier.

When finished, I will have a BRP hitch that is level with the riding surface, that I can easily hook the trailer to the ball, or use the adapter to attach the luggage/cooler carrier, OR the golf bag carrier. I should have all the bases covered that way.

I picked up a nice hard side travel case that I will be mounting. Got it off Ebay.

I'll be sure to take pics and post total costs when the project is complete.

If the golf travel case arrives this week, I plan to complete the project on Sunday. Honestly, with the use of that MIG welder (with which I have experience using) I should be able to complete this mod in one afternoon.

I'll keep you updated!! :ohyea:

:roflblack: You're right, I cringed a tiny bit. :roflblack:

I want to throw out a couple of things for you to think about. First, one of the strengths of the BRP hitch design is a one-piece "yoke" for the hitch portion. There are no welds, making it much stronger and lighter. I would highly recommend some substantial reinforcement if you elect to cut your hitch the way you planned. If you are not an experienced MIG welder, I would get someone who is to do the work.

Second, I hope you realize that the revised hitch will only be level at one point. It moves in relationship to the Spyder during use, so it is going to be at a different angle when you load the suspension. If you climb aboard, carry a passenger, carry cargo on the Spyder, or hit a bump, the angle will change. This will move your golf bag closer to the Spyder at every bounce. Be sure to allow enough clearance...at very least. It would be stronger and less likely to have interference problems if you modified your attachment to bring it level (at some chosen point), rather than modify the hitch itself.

Excellent advice Scotty. I'll definitely look at that load angle. I am not worried too much about the strength of the weld. I owned a muffler/brake shop for ten years and have substantial MIG experience. I just don't own one anymore. Wish I did! will definitely have reinforcement if I do actually cut into the hitch. But before I do, I'll take your advice and look at that load angle.

Thanks for all your posts on the board. You are a wonderful resource on SpyderLovers!

OK Folks, here is why SpyderLovers ROCKS.
I have this grand plan to make my golf bag carrier look better.
However Scotty, being the guru he is, politely pointed out that I should look at a couple of things before I jumped into cutting and welding.

Well, I am here to say THANK YOU SCOTTY! nojoke Your advice just saved me a load of headaches. I may or may not have realized when I started the project how the hitch reacted when a load was on the Spyder. But the end result is, with your excellent advice, I got my son to sit on the Spyder while I took some measurements and made some observations. You are right the hitch does pivot up to a "near level" position when a load is in place (In this case my 180# Son sitting on the passenger seat).

So two things,

First this makes my mod MUCH easier. I just need to make some brackets and attach to the travel bag, then slip into the receiver.

Second, Scotty saved me from potentially making a very costly mistake.:bowdown::bowdown:

My dad always said, measure twice, cut once. I am glad Scotty reminded me of that.

THANKS! Three thumbs up. :2thumbs::thumbup:

Very bummed out today. My travel case didn't arrive. Since the whole project depends on this, I am at a stand still. :cus:

Still on go. Just delayed. The case I really wanted for a vertical install arrived. The problem is that it doesn't fit today's 46" drivers. :( So after an exhaustive search, I ordered a different and unfortunately bit more expensive case. However this new case combined with an epiphany of sorts has led me to modify my original plan slightly, but I think for the better. I won't give away too many details, save to say that it will now have some LED lighting installed. Stay tuned!!

Stevemac, What happened with your golf bag carrier prototype. Sounded interesting.:ani29:

golf bag carrier

Been awhile since I've been on the site. I visited my spyder dealer and did some measurements and a quick drawing of the trailor hitch. I then fabbed up the carrier shown in the attatched picture. The 1st one was steel and when it worked well I decided to lighten it by making it out of aluminum.I had a 2008 RS and then got a 2010 rt.....Love the RT.seven.jpg
