• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Can I get a definitive answer on trailer hitches?

Best of both worlds

The best solution: a PM from a member willing to sell his BRP hitch kit at the BBP price because it looked like too much trouble to install.

Thank you Joe.

Double check to make sure it is truly a BRP hitch and kit! Ask for the part number. It should be #219400432 for the RT and 219400431 for the ST.

Both will fit

Both the RT and ST hitch will fit on your RT. The ST hitch kit has an extra license plate relocator bracket you don't need, but the rest is the same. Just something you should know if you are looking in the used market.

I am sorry but what your dealer told you is a large steamy pile of BS. Your Spyder does not know your trailer is attached unless you choose trailer mode in the menu.

Looks like I'm not the only one who was told this............

After my wife and I spent an entire summer long vist in the hospital (1977) due to a motorcycle accident we are extreamly careful of what can affect our health & safety on a bike - We just
started riding again 2014 via a Spyder (She will never get on two wheels again) So this info on hitches and "Trailer Mode" stuff is on the top of our most important list as we are about to purchase a trailer
this spring to go on trips.

It is one of the many often parroted myths about the Spyder. Some other example are: The magical key walk. Filling engine oil to the full line will fill the air box with oil. Not filling oil to the full line will cause a SE5 not to shift right. A new battery will fix all electrical problems even if the battery load tests good. Not plugging a battery tender when parked will a destroy your battery in days. There are more of course and some have a basis in a small grain of fact but have been exaggerated to the ridiculous.

Filling the oil to full cold WILL dump oil into the filter. Leaving it 1/8- 1/4 inch low hot has no effect on a SE5 shifting. My air box is clean. I know I do it and never had an issues so it is not a myth. Not using a tender for several weeks not days (or riding it) will drain your battery maybe not to a level that destroys it but to a point that it may pop a code. Stators take a looong ride to recharge batteries.

The definative answer is: The BRP hitch is engineered for the Spyders period.. If you're looking to buy a less expensive hitch as some do,, than that's the definative answer.for you..They are not the same and in my opinion are priced accordingly.. I have some issues with BRPs pricing on a lot of things but the hitch ain't one of them...

Just have an adjunct question for the wisdom of the group....... My 2012 RT had a trailer mode that was accessible from the setup menu on the display..... my 2014 RT Ltd does not have this option.... how does the 2014 know when I am pulling my trailer?:dontknow:

Thanks for your replies!:clap::popcorn::popcorn:

Pretty sure the 14 -15 RT's don't have a trailer mode

No trailer mode on the 14-15. Its simply does not care.

I was thinking about this "warranty" part of the discussion this morning while swimming around in my coffee cup... :coffee:
Early on; there were a bunch of instances when faulty control modules wreaked havoc on RT electrical systems. With the BRP hitch; they were on the hook for the repairs.
If you let your best friend's cousin's, sister's, ex-brother in law hack into the wiring to light the trailer; what do you think BRP will have to say about it, if things get ugly?

Stators take a looong ride to recharge batteries.

What is that suppose to mean. Since all since all electrical generators, alternators, magnetos and electric motors have a Stator. Maybe you are confused by the terms and mean that the alternator on the 1330 engine is better than the magneto on the 998 engine. That is true. But the mag in the 998 was often blamed for problems that it did not cause.

Not using a tender for several weeks not days (or riding it) will drain your battery maybe not to a level that destroys it but to a point that it may pop a code.

So I take you agree with me that a tender does not need to be plugged into your Spyder every minute that it is parked. But is a good idea when sitting for long periods like a few weeks. Depending on addons that have a parasitic load of course.

Filling the oil to full cold WILL dump oil into the filter. Leaving it 1/8- 1/4 inch low hot has no effect on a SE5 shifting. My air box is clean. I know I do it and never had an issues so it is not a myth.

So I see you agree that the oil level being a little low will not affect shifting of SE5. I hope we can agree that when the oil gets about 1 quart below the add line shifting will be affected.

So you believe filing your oil to the full line will somehow force oil into the airbox. I would be interested in your explanation in how and why that would happen. Please be detailed in explaining the route that the oil would take from the oil tank to the air box. Also why it would follow this route when near full and not when a little lower. Here is a copy of the oil plumbing to help you.

Oil in the airboxes, has never been a big issue with the RTs...
Although some of the earlier GS bikes got a bit messy at times.

Excellent point well made.
