Hi all, can anyone give me step by step information on how to replace the rear brake pads without taking off the tire on a 2012 Spyder RS-S would really appreciate it
No, a 2013 has Brembo brakes. 5/8 deep well socket to remove bolts. Once the caliper is free, remove clip, pin, then pads. Replace. Rotate caliper to press against a rag under muffler. Use needle nose pliers in divots on piston to turn while pushing in. Once piston is flush, insert pads. Mount caliper with pads on both sides of rotor. Easy job!
I have a brake caliper tool, but can’t find a small enough fitting for the rear Brembo.
I Hate using needle nose pliers on them, because I’m sure it will eventually gall it up.
I have made a Rear Caliper Retraction Tool specifically designed for the 2013-2018 rear Brembo caliper. This fits onto the end of a 3/8" ratchet/extension These are $14.95 delivered. No more needle nose pliers!

Utube has several videos, but the short answer is:
Pretty easy.Call if you get stuck. Joe
- Raise bike to be able to get at the caliper.
- Look thru the wheel on the left side and see 2 clips on bolts on the caliper.
- Remove clips.
- On the right side, remove the parking brake pulley and brake cable.
- Remove both allen bolts holding on caliper.
- Remove caliper, see pads.
- Remove rubber boot over parking brake shaft, put a large socket over it to protect it.
- Compress piston with a large "C" clamp, pushing piston flush with caliper.
- see retaining clip on bolt that holds pads in; remove clip, remove bolt, remove pads. Replace pads.
- install bolt and clip that holds pads in.
- slip caliper back over rotor.
- Install allen bolts.
- install clips on allen bolts.
- Pump brakes to move piston back to pads.
- Install parking brake pulley and cable.

What year bike are you working on?????What is the trick to removing the nut on the pulley? It just wants to rotate the pulley when I try to turn the nut.
Sorry Mikey, but I just gotta...What year bike are you working on?????
They work great Ron. Thx.Rear Caliper Retraction Tool

Thanks Peter, sometimes when someone drags one of these old posts out instead of asking their own question you get lost!!!Sorry Mikey, but I just gotta...
This thread does follow a bit of a convoluted path, but let's do a quick run thru - it was started back in 2017; revived in 2018 to ask if the 2013 Brembo brakes were the same; taken a little off topic in 2020; pulled back onto the original topic in 2022; then revived on the original topic in July 2025 to question the explanation given back in August 2017; and the title does say:
"Can anyone give me step-by-step instructions on Rear brake pads replacing without taking off the tire on a 2012 RS-S?"
So I guess it's not absolutely impossible to see how some might get lost along the way, but I'm pretty sure that @kerrro is asking about the early brakes - those from before the 2013 change to Brembo's. And this is further supported by the fact that, in another post, @kerrro does mention "My Spyder is a 2012, RS" So I'm reasonably confident that at least the first part of the thread and the latest part of the on-topic discussion in this thread is about the early brakes - specifically, those brakes found on 2012 RS's.Make sense?!
