Camping 2 UP

Had a great June 2014 trip with our 12 RTS this summer. 1500 plus miles riding our Spyder up through Northern California. The Spyder did great even with all our camping gear. We sold our Bushtec Turbo 2 trailer to another Calif. Spyder rider recently and went with a hitch rack and a trunk rack to carry all our camping gear. It worked great! We kept only about 22 lbs on the hitch rack (plus the 8 lbs for the rack itself) and just used the trunk rack for our tent and sleeping pads. Hit some high winds near Mojave and Reno but no issues. Also got into a nasty rain storm at 8700 feet while going through Ebbetts Pass just south of Lake Tahoe. The only thing we couldn't carry that our trailer could was a screen room which we never really used when we had the Bushtec trailer. A few pics from the trip.

(note the use of all the Wolfman gear. Wolfman Tank panniers used over the trunk, Yellow Medium Dry bag on hitch rack and tank bag. Cannot say enough good things about Wolfman products. I use all these items on my dual sport rides for Death Valley trips but they work great on the Spyder and are very high quality!)

Thanks for the pics and info. We currently camp (I mean RV) in a 5th wheel trailer and take the Spyder with us. But I would also like to do some road trips and camp along the way on our ST. My thought was to purchase a trailer & install the hitch. But abviously there are other option out there. I did not look into it that much so far. We will have to see which way we want to go.

We are into our seventh week on a trip. We pull a RT-622, our tent is a Whirlwind Guide 5 made by Chinook, self-inflating thermarest air mattresses, and decent sleeping bags. It is comfortable gear and we can get torn down and packed up in about an hour, but I have to admit I am sometimes jealous when I see the folks with pop ups setting up.

Great..!!

down sized and still manage to do it all. Looks secure and well packed. Also sounds like a great trip..congrats..!! :2thumbs: thanks for the pictures..

Very cool. Nice packing job.

Thank you all for all the great responses! It is nice there are so many options for us Spyder riders to go camping. We used to have a 11 Spyder RS that I built a rack for the back of and then using the BRP side cases for our camping needs. It was tough and we had to leave a lot of stuff at home with just not enough space to pack. The Spyder RTS has worked well with our current setup.

Hey Don, we must have gone right by you. After hitting Weldon (near Lake Isabella) we went down 178 to the 14 and 395 and then up the 395 to June Lake. After camping at June Lake, we took the 395 up to the 88/89 to get to the East side of Lake Tahoe. Wish we knew or we would have met up! We did see a total of two other Spyders on our trip which seems to be about typical on our previous rides.
