• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

California Emmissions Requirement

As I see it..!!

California does not smog check motorcycles. The issue is registering them here if they were bought out of state. I think they really believe they are special and better than all the rest. When I went to change my license from CT to CA even though I had had a CA license before they said we had to take a written test (in pen on paper). I guess they feel the rules are different outside of CA but we didn't have to take the driven test probably cause we drove ourselves there..:roflblack:

Oddly, California is one of the few states that doesn't require a motorcycle endorsement if you ride a trike. I think trike riders are also exempt from the helmet law. <------ correct me if I'm wrong. :dontknow:

There have been 49 state motorcycles and California motorcycles since at least the early 80s. I don't know if CanAm s are built so all are CARB compliant or if they do 2 separate models. I would ask you favorite dealer or BRP directly.

Nope

Does anybody know if Spyders sold around the country meet California Emmissions requirements? Specifically the 2015 RT models?

Depending on the year and the model there may be a California model or not. Specifically 2015 RT there is no California model so the North America model is compliant for all 50 states and Canada.

We worked on a 2013 RT yesterday that was being registered in Utah since it could not be registered in CA where the owner lives. He said the DMV showed him the label on his Spyder and the CA compliant label and they are different. I believe that his can be registered in CA after it hits a certain mileage threshold, this Spyder was purchased used from outside of CA. So check before you buy if you live in the land of fruit and nuts (but not all Spyders)

I wanted to get my F3S from Texas, cost a few grand less but California DMV said no way, you can only buy a used one with over 7,500 miles on it if you intend to register it here in Ca. So I bought it here and paid more money. Was glad i checked before flying to Texas and riding back here

California does not require a motorcycle endorsement but they do require trike riders to wear a helmet
Nevada changed their classification this year due to Slingshot
Trikes are now a tri mobile and it does not need a motorcycle endorsement and does not require a helmet

Yes, used and at least 7,500 miles on the unit, but I wanted F3S and all were new in Jan. When I told the Texas dealer I lived in Ca. He said he couldn't sell certain models to California due to Carb compliance. Be sure to check before you buy!!!!

You will NOT be able to regester and
license any vehicle 2-3-4 or more wheels
unless it has the label by the Vin number saying
it is 50 state legal.
I have 3 friends who bought new motorcycles
out of state and DMV would not reg. them.
2 were from ARZ. and the third was from Utah
they bought them because they got them for
around 2000 less thzn in California.
All three tried to return them, they had to sell them as used
in the other states. you can register a used bike from out
of state but it has to have a state specified milage on it first

CA motorcycle endorsements

From Feb 1970 until July 1971 my wife and I were transferred from LA to Kingston, NY, to Valley Forge, PA and back to LA. We got her a motorcycle in PA, and I changed motorcycles.

We had to take the CA written exam, and the MC riders exam, but not the car drivers exam. I pulled her bike off the homemade trailer and the examiner asked my wife the location of the clutch and front brake levers - wrong answer given. Then he asked how many gears - wrong answer given. She rode the course and passed.

I started to pull my bigger bike off the trailer, and the examiner told me to forget it - if I could load and unload it, surely I could ride it.

I believe that when my license expires in 2017, I must take the exams again because of my elderhood. I'm not currently worried about the motorcycle exam, but guess I'll have to practice parallel parking:banghead:. Wonder if I can use the Spyder for both road exams:rolleyes:?

Is there any advantage to living in California? When you see all the restrictive rules and regulations it just makes me want to stay as far away as I can.

Oh Yeah

Sure there is:

I don't need a MC endorsement. The Weather, and the fact that California has almost all of the different ryding terrains that the other 50 states have, and we don't have to leave home. I can do the Iron Butt without ever leaving the state. And I met my wife here!:yes::yes:
