C.H.A.D. is here...

Preliminary ride report...

... on C.H.A.D.

I'd give it an 8.5 out of 10.

Comfort

I currently have it adjusted mid-way up and mid-way on the forward/back swivel. There is still room to look OVER the shield... which you need, IMHO. There still is about 1.5 inches of adjustment left going UP.

Although not recommended, if you are buying a shield to look THROUGH, this is not for you. There is some distortion in the plastic from the top re-curve. Like I said, I wouldn't buy one to look through... not too good when it rains or....

Wind protection... at the mid-point adjustments, I still have a slight amount of air hitting the very top of the helmet at 70 mph (available UP adjustment would probably solve that). Two rides are scheduled for this weekend where speeds MAY exceed that. :joke: More on that Monday.

Buffeting is all but gone... can ride with the helmet shield up and not be blown away. That is good. This will be a great winter shield.

Adjustment

There is no way you are going to safely adjust this shield while riding. In fact, the thumb screws themselves may not be enough to keep it in the desired position. At 70 mph, with the adjustments firm and tight, the shield moved backward to its rear-most position. Not a big deal... but.... this is why the points decreased from a "10" to "8.5".

Quality

As I said earlier, the plastic and metal mounts are both great... no complaints. The slight re-curve on the top of the plastic seems to help quite a bit.

Appearance

Because it's relatively big, and the metal mounts are visible (I got a clear screen), it is less than beautiful. The mid-sized CalSci is about as big as a shield can get and still be attractive, IMHO.

However, for winter, comfort is paramount. In this case, function over form wins.

Vendor

No Magic Neon is the re-seller of the product whom I used. I just love those guys. I ordered this shield months ago when it was first announced and before the manufacturing delays from I7. Evan's wife called in late October telling me they were going to refund my money because of the delays. I declined... as it was destined to be my winter shield... and we waited it out. NMN folks were concerned and kept me informed on multiple occasions.

Would I Do It Again?

Oh, yes.

Good report Bro. :doorag:
What do you think about reshaping the top so it's not so squared off?

It's so "weird" (in a sci-fi way) that I'll probably leave that as it is for better winter coverage. It does provide great protection as it is... wouldn't want to lose any of it. Keep in mind, I'll probably re-install the CalSci in March or so.

However, there are a few machining mods to make the mod "positive lock" that I'm thinking about. Shouldn't be hard... I7 should have done it that way to begin with... a series of half-holes for the adjuster bolts to fit in along the sides of the forward/backward swing adjustment slots.

.

What's the adjusting bolt hardware look like? Would adding a internal star lock washer help it hold position do you think?

1/8" thick brackets sliding against each other... with the thumbscrews through the brackets... forces the brackets against each other.

Keep in mind there are two different... but integrated... adjustments... up/down and front/back tilt.

A star washer might help but only between the sliding brackets... under the thumbscrews would be no help. They don't loosen up... its the wind force from the front which pushes the shield back on that front/back tilt axis. The up/down axis is not a problem at all and stays put just fine.

I may try them between the brackets just to see what happens.

Thanks!

Update...

Now with several hundred miles, I can safely say that this is a great winter windshield... great protection and easy adjustment. Adjusted full up, with the tilt halfway back, I get just a slight breeze at the very top of the helmet all the way up to 100+ mph.

The "problem" with holding the adjustment "set" was resolved by using a stainless steel "star" lock washer on each of the top two adjustment bolts between the sliding sheet metal parts.

good review

ataDude, thanks for the great report. I've been looking at the CHAD but haven't bit the bullet yet. Question, how tall are you? I'm 6'1" and am looking for full protection for a cross county trip in May.

5'10" but.....

I'm using the Corbin seat and Kewl Metal 7" bars. If you're using stock seat and handlebars (even with the 1" riser), I'm actually sitting "taller" than you with my set-up.

This is not the same "ICE" who was active in the VTX Texas community, is it?

Regarding the wind, is it strong enough to damage the CHAD or its stability mechanism? Wouldn't the manufacturer have tried the windshield at high speeds to be sure all was stable?

Happy new year to all.
Please see photos below. This screen is set at about 50% of the rake adjustment and close to the top of the slide adjustment. Other riders would probably have it set lower.
At this with my upright seating position (I am 6ft and have 3” risers on the bars) at 110kmph I can open my visor and the wind is clean over the top of my helmet. I am looking over the screen, not through it.
I can hear the engine noise now, that I could not before because of wind noise. Very good hand coverage- see photo two.
No turbulence and no negative pressure behind the screen as it is spaced above the Spyders bodywork due to the brackets.
This is about the best I could ever expect in the way of protection. It may need the "star" washer between the adjustment plates to stop wind pressure making it creep back - not sure yet but if it does that's no big deal.
However this is not some dinky little sports screen that is there just “for looks”.. It is big to give the complete coverage and it looks “different”. I am however getting quite used to it - I think. It does not look too tall probably because of the width, its just "big" compared to the standard Spyder screen.

Absolutely not, the screen and mounts are strong enough. One of the test days had speeds up to about 85-90 mph but with winds... at different directions... of up to 60 mph gusts. Windy day, it was. /understatement off :D

Nice to hear that the C.H.A.D. is working out for you mrb. I do find it interesting that they delayed release of the C.H.A.D. windshield for about 4 months to "get it right" and some of the first reviews I've read suggest that it doesn't maintain a set position at sustained highway speeds. Maybe ataDude's need for the star washer was an isolated incident.

Good to hear...once I started reading the complaints of additional hardware needed to keep it stable, I started to cringe.

I'll be getting a new windshield this year...if not this one, then the BRP ultra-touring...I do like the ability of this windshield to move...knowing it's build very well is a good thing...certainly don't want a windshield to start moving around when you're out for a ride...yikes!

Keep in mind that the ONLY movement I had without the star washers was the tilt, or rake, adjustment function. The up/down adjustment was/is fine.

Even if that happens, it does not affect driveability or safety... only the possible amount of wind hitting your helmet.

I like this shield!

got out today to test my new Industries7 Chad windshield......And it worked great! I am 6'4" and have been on the search for a windshield since last april......and have tried many with no success.

I road today for about 40 miles in 20 and 30 degree weather including highways and up to 90mph......and it is an A+!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really like the looks of it compared to the others out there as well!

It took me about 10 minutes to install it.
