There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Buying a used Spyder

Is there a year that I should avoid due to mechanical problems? I heard from a guy that I should avoid older models before 2010. Anybody lnow any truth about that?

What I have read on this forum is the 2013s have had the most problems, , a big one being heat problems. Heat to the point of boiling the gas and even fire. This is being investigated by the National Highway safety committee. BRP has some modification panels to help release the heat. I have a 2010 with only minor problems. Good luck.

:welcome:

It would depend somewhat on which model you're considering. I had a 2011 RTS and now 2014 RTS, & loved them both. The only issue I've had is some heat on my right foot from the '11. There's lots of threads here about how to mitigate that.

If you're still shopping in April, come to Spyderfest and see Len at Pitbull. He'll have some for sale there as people trade for the newest on the floor. If you have bought before that, come on to the party, anyway!!

Good luck in your quest.

I understand your concerns, but it's like anything, if you don't maintain with regular service and ride it hard any bike will have issues down the line. I happen to have a 08 for sale on this site right now and I have never had a major issue. I have always serviced it religiously and ride it like I love it. Wish I didn't have to sell but other priorities must come first. There are other older spyders out there that you can buy for a lot less money than the new ones and that are in good condition, just keep looking. I'm sure you'll find one. Good Luck in your search.

:welcome: If you're looking at the GS/RS series of bikes; you have some things to consider.
If it's the 990 series engine that you want, (more horsepower, throttle by cable), look for a 2012.
As far as the 991-engines bikes; I'd go for 2014...
The ST series: 2014
RTs... either a 2012, or a 2014...
They made some pretty good bikes last year...
Personally; I'd try to avoid 2013.
But if you find a good one; they can also be a very good choice!

The only year with major problems was 2013. I would also avoid that.

See my signature below. I have owned everything else except for a 2012. I would not hesitate on recommending any of the others.

Have a dealer inspect and run the VIN on any used. You can get a history and see if it was properly serviced. Many times in the shop, and I would let that one go by.

If a SL member bike, look up their posts. You can also get a history of the bike from the owner's perspective.

Hi Morlin,

Re: I heard from a guy that I should avoid older models before 2010.

9 months ago I bought a '08 with 4k miles on it; I'm 3rd owner; it was in near perfect condition.

I have not had one problem in the 1,000 miles I've put on it since.

"I heard from a guy" is right up there with 'my ex-wife's sister's son-in-law said . . . . .'

i have a 2009 RS/SE5 and except for 1 issue with the electronic shifting system, i have had no problems in over 44,000 miles....
my advise is, to check the service record of any
SPYD3R you're thinking of buying.... SERVICE is the key to maintaining a good product... :firstplace:

While this is true; it's just about equally true (except for the 2013s), that they've improved them each year.

The 2013 owners are not going to like this thread one bit........................... :roflblack::roflblack:

Those who have posted are not trying to rub it in. Just friendly advice, to those who do not know the history of the machine. I would be very happy if someone gave me a heads up like that.

Yes, there are many 2013's out there that have not had any problems. It would be nice to latch on to one of them, but will you?
That is the $64,000 question.

I have a 2008 Can Am Spyder GS Roadster SM5. The only issue was the park brake. A friend of mine who works on bikes solved that problem for me. I have over 37,000km. (20,000 miles). NO MAJOR ISSUES.
Highly Recommended.

Thanks

Thanks. It was one of my Dads customers. He owned an 08 10 and now a 14. Maybe he just had bad luck with his.

I am a completely new rider and wanted some more Input.

I am looking at a 10 roadster RS

I had a 09 RS....put 54,000 miles trouble free besides general maintenance ......now own 2013 ST many problems....but the 2010 RS you will live it

I did not say the SS was 64K--where did you get that from? :roflblack:

I have offered my 2011 non-premiere RT edition for sale for $24K but have not had any takers yet. So it's looking like no SS for me. :roflblack:
