Helmets tend to reduce the severity of injuries in a bad crash. They don't necessarily prevent them. Here is my EPS liner from a Shoei Neotec after a crash. Still had TBI and Bilateral Retinal Detachment...

Yes I buy a new helmet every 5 years or so. I don't spend more then $250 on mine and usually get them on sale. When I was working as a machinist and riding to work every day I would stink of cutting oil by days end. There was no way I was putting my stinking head in a new helmet, so I used the 4 yr old helmet for commuting for a couple years. I rotated helmets that way for years. Scorpion helmets have been my brand of choice but I always wanted to try a Bell, so that's my next one. Most manufacturers specify that you should buy a new helmet after about 5 years even if you have not had an accident or dropped it. How many follow this practice. Mine is now 7 years old and seems in good condition. I have removed all the padding and inspected the foam lining and the styrofoam interior and everything looks good. I really like my helmet and hate to spend a bunch of money if it is only a marketing ploy.
To be honest, if you store your helmet inside away from the damaging effects of the sun's UV rays, and all the foam padding inside is still intact and not squashed, why even consider buying a new helmet?? Just make sure it wasn't dropped or was hit in any way. Most manufacturers specify that you should buy a new helmet after about 5 years even if you have not had an accident or dropped it. Can you provide any backup information on your statement:To be honest, if you store your helmet inside away from the damaging effects of the sun's UV rays, and all the foam padding inside is still intact and not squashed, why even consider buying a new helmet?? Most manufacturers claim that 5-year replacement to increase profits.
YMMV...
And how do you ride if your helmet is store inside away from the sun?To be honest, if you store your helmet inside away from the damaging effects of the sun's UV rays
