BUYERS BEWARE -- 2014 Spyder RT

Bought my Spyder, serial #2BXNBDD19EV00402 Date 1-2014 on Feb. 20. Had it 4 days and it would not start. Was told sensor in gas tank was put in wrong and laying at the bottom of gas tank. Had it towed home plus a taxi ride that I paid for. Called dealer and it would take them 4 days before they could pick it up. Called Cam Am assistance. They said it would cost $800 to take it to the dealer I bought it from and they would pay $200 since the Can Am dealer was less than 10 miles from closer Cam Am dealer. Tried to pack the fronk and then tried to open it and the lid and seat would not open. Now the dealer is saying I put to much pressure on the switch and I have to buy a new switch because I forced it! The sensor was put in a week, now I have to wait 7 to 10 days to just get the part from Canada before I can get it installed. Thankfully to this board I have been able to open my seat which I have had to take out so I can at least fill it. When I took it back to the dealer they opened the fronk and took my pack out and said they had shut it. I now have a $30,000 plus machine with wire's hanging from my latches so that I can open my hatches and that has only been from the help of this board, which I have had to do. The frustration I have had to own this machine is more than I really have wanted. This has been not only to get someone to wait on me, to actually ride the machine before I paid that much for it, to now being able to really enjoy it! Think before YOU buy yours, maybe I should have……

It's unfortunate that you're having some issues with your sypder and I can understand your frustration but to tell people that they shouldn't buy a machine because of an isolated incident IMO is alittle harsh.

I hope that everything gets sorted out and that you can get as much enjoyment out of your spyder as I have.

It sounds as if you should have perhaps bought from a different dealer...
Good Luck; please let us know what happens next!

I can fully understand your frustration with your less than helpful dealer. Have those scars myself.

I do hope you get things worked out and can enjoy the bike. BRP does need to do some work on a better dealer support network for a touring bike. Its a great product and nothing else out there like it.

You do have a support network here though. Keep us posted and we will all try and help where we can.

Plan to head to Durango in June for the Owners event, your pretty close.

I bought a Can Am dirt bike in the 70's and enjoyed it BUT they were the only one's that could or knew anything about them. Had it about a year before the Can Am dealer went out of business and NO one could work on it because of their electronic system, I was told. I ended up giving it away and paying 2 more years on the bike. I believe Can Am makes great machines but your at their dealers knowledge and understanding of a machine they are only interested in selling. This Spyder is the most wonderful machine I have ever rode, makes me feel like I'm 15 and do see more on the road so I do know what you mean.

Just try and remember if you bought a 2 Million dollar Bugatti they still have repair and service departments, because they can also have things go wrong with them. I know that his doesn't help with your current problem but I believe that the Spyder is one of the best machines out there!

When I brought my 2013, I was told by two dealers , the first six months , had an un gradational warranty. Which meant everything was covered, even if I broke it ! Don't see why you would need to pay for towing when it was do to manufacture error! If there is a dealer closer, call them and see if they meet your needs. You don't have to go to the dealer you purchased it from. I had similar experience when I brought one, went to a better dealer and they took care of me and corrected mistakes that original dealer made, missing clips, bolts etc.
once you get to ride , you will love it !!!!

I am very sorry to hear about the issues with your brand new 2014. It does sound like you have a "less than perfect" dealer when it comes to customer relations issues.

I cannot see the dealer footing the bill for $800 in tow charges--but the issues with gas tank sensor, and broken frunk latch should be taken care of fully. No questions asked. Also, IMO, they should put you to the front off the line. $30K is a lot to spend and then be treated badly 4 days later.

BRP Care (Steve) was on here just the other day, telling how customer service oriented they have become. I would contact him ASAP and let them start to carry the ball here.

Please keep us posted as to how this all transpires. We are concerned and want to see your issues solved and getting the enjoyment out of the :spyder2: that you want.

I am wiring the latches now. Almost scared to go anywhere, can't wait to see what's going to happen next. I did get AAA for motorcycles and hopefully can depend on them. Its just waiting some place for 7 to 10 working days before a part can be gotten that worries me! As young as I feel on this machine I hope to stay on it this summer as much as I can. Wanting to stay gone all summer ridding, you may see me in Durango. Planning on taking 101 up into Canada, June 6 have to be in Washington and then to South Caroline and back to Az. in Oct. Just can't seem to get going.... Without this support network I WOULD NOT BE RIDING MY $30,000 SPYDER!!!!!

Your issues are with those dealers. The warranty is clearly stated as being a "limited warranty", with the conditions stated. The written copy is in your owners manual.

*BUYERS BEWARE -- 2014 Spyder RT ~ Really?

Problems

#1. Manufacturer error. Fixed by dealer. Stuff happens.
#2. Owner error. To be fixed by dealer. Stuff happens.

Buyer beware?
Of what?

You need to find a new dealer. My guess would be that you bought it from Ride Now as I have never heard a good report about them.

:agree: It's a good place to start!
The trick; is in figuring out the legitimate complaints, from the ones by folks who are just NEVER happy...

I think you are fully justified in complaining after dropping $30K. You certainly should expect it to be functioning 100%. The 2014 is in it's first year and definitely has had some teething problems, so I think your warning is also valid for potential buyers. I hope you get things resolved quickly so you can enjoy your new bike.

13, The last year for the RT with the V-twin was not much better! Turns out the best year for the RT was 2012, 13 was the "change over" year and gave us a list of issues with random heat issues and the start of the 14's had some issues as well. But what seems to be the worst is how the dealer network is handling and fixing the issues. For some finding a good dealer is a crap shoot at best. The dealer network for these this is few and far between and some people are driving huge distances to buy a Spyder only to find out that if there is a problem its tough to get it fixed by a decent dealer.

Still trying to figure out why you had to pay for towing? I thought that was included during the warranty period. I did try to call them once when I had a operator error and no one ever answered the phone. Where is this mysterious "Steve" when these things rear there ugly heads.

You would be doing all of us on this board a big favor if you told us who your dealer is. Ride Now has a monopoly on this product in AZ. They are the only dealer here in Tucson. Only other dealers in AZ are one store of Apache that handles Spyders and Desert Dog in Fountain Hills. In other words only two dealers in Arizona that do not belong to Ride Now. They Charge $130 per hour for maintenance?????? What gives?

First thing BRP should do is get some other dealers in AZ. Ride now is holding everyone up not only in maintenance but sales.

Try Apache or Desert Dog if you have not already.
