• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

BRP Oil - Summer vs Winter

The key element here is "JASO MA2"- Should be good. I just don't personally like the 5W40, eventhough BRP specs it. I think for BRP it is one oil for everything, snowmobiles, watercraft, spyders or whatever, all over the world and any climate.
I think for my riding climate and given the fact I am much more concerned with the heat effects on engines than I am with the cold flow rate of oil, I will continue to use a 10W40 full synthetic.:f_spider:

I pretty much agree, however until BRP officially changes their specification to allow some leeway, we all jeopardize our warranties in case of engine damage, if we use something else. If you use an oil or viscosity not specified by BRP, including their own summer/winter oils, you take on some risk. It should be a conscious, informed decision on your part. I have a five year warranty, and am unwilling to take that risk at the moment, even if it means scouring the ends of the earth for a suitable oil, or running what I consider to be too light an oil in the machine. BRP could make this all so easy with a simple service bulletin. Their reluctance worries me no end. There has to be some reason for their refusal.

If I had warranty issues and I was using MOBIL 1 10W40 Motorcycle Oil. BRP would have to prove that this High quality/ highly rated oil caused the problem; I don't think BRP would want to take on the Mobil oil co. don't think that would ever happen. ( That is the least of my worries with the Spyder) Actually my dealer totally agrees with my oil selection. I think it would be easier to prove that a 5 weight oil in 100 degree temps would be more detrimental since the oil weight one uses should be tailored to the driving conditions. One of my concerns is that it takes a lot of Viscosity index improvers (VII) to make a 5 weight oil and especially a 0 weight oil offer the same protection as a 40 weight at high temps and under high pressure. VII additives are chemicals and are not in themselves lubricant so in any given quart a 5w or 0w oil actually has less lubricant than say a 10W or 20W. I understand your concern Scotty but for me it is a non issue. I just use what I think is the best for my ride based on what creditible research provides. IMHO.nojoke

OIL

It is 5W-40, API SL, JASO MA2 and designated for high performance motorcycles. Check out the Castrol motorcycle oil brochure at www.proformanceusa.com

I think this oil is a Group 111 synthetic (Hydroisomerized dino oil) and can only be considered a synthetic by legal defination here in the US. That may explain why BRP doesn't put much on their label since it is sold all over the world. A group IV synthetic i.e. Amzoil, Mobil 1, Red line ect. is 100% (PAO) synthetic. I could be wrong but this is what I think.:dontknow:

I need to change oil in my spider RT-S- what oil to use- live in NJ what brand to use

+1 Also, why would any manufacturer continue to ignore cries for a service bulletin relating to the fact that their own new oil does not meet their own spec? BRP has had plenty of time to respond to this, yet merely has released a PR type of dealer promo letter. Something is fishy here!

what have you found that works?

MAKING OIL

Honestly, does anyone think BRP is actually making / refineing their own OIL.....They are buying it from somebody..............And in the beginning BRP swore your Spyder would self-destruct if didn't use SYNTHETIC OIL in it......Now without changing the engine specs you no longer have to use synthetic oil......I wish they would make up their minds .......Mike
