• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Break-in period

I have a 2015 ST LTD, with about 400 miles on it.

The dealer who sold me said that during the break in period, I should be between the 3,000 to 4,000 RPM range. On this forum, I read that the spyder is happiest when shifted at over 5,000 to 5,500 RPMs, and drive it at 4,000-4,300 RPMs. Should I ever be in 5th gear, unless I am on a highway?

Is it Ok that I do that now, during the break-in period, or should I be more cautious?

Any other advice until I reach a certain mileage? And what should that mileage be? When I do my 600 miles maintenance, or beyond?

Thank you.

That advice is for the twin 998 engine, not the triple 1330. However I have always been a believer that you should drive it like you stole it from day one.

My apologies I should have noted it was an ST.

Sorry..!!

we sometimes forget to mention that the two types of engines are different. All RT for 2014 and all RT and F3's have the new 1330 cc engine. All those prior have the v-twin 998cc engines...:agree:

we have warranties so my break in is ride it like you stole it, have done this on all my bikes and never had a problem. but please don't listen to me

Break In Period

He has an ST Ltd, not an RT so he has the 998 V-Twin. Up shift it at 5500 RPM's or above, and downshift when RPM's go down to 4200 or below. Do not use 5th gear below 65 mph and you will be fine. First service is at 600 miles. Let the dealer do the first service and oil change so that they can check everything. After first service do oil changes yourself if you are so inclined to save money.

I suppose that during the break-in period; I tried to vary the rpm a lot... I'd keep the revs above 3,500, so that the clutches would live, and then I'd just run different gears in order to "run the rpm scale" a bit.
I also ran the engine through a LOT of heat cycles: I'd get it up to temperature, and then shut it down. Any long ride involved lots of picnics and picture taking. :D
Watch your oil levels; the 998s will tend to burn some off between changes!
And enjoy the ryde! :D
