• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Brake Pad Life?

Going to be hitting 12k soon...

How many miles should I expect out of the brake pads? I know there will be a lot of answers all over the map on this, but they are starting to squeal a bit and I'm getting concerned... Stopping just fine however.
 
I check my pad pretty often. 10 G miles and plenty left. I don't romp on the brake often though. I try to gear down coming to stops as often as possible. Probably count on two hands still how often I've had to really jump on the brakes. Could easily see getting at least 10 - 15 G more out of these pad before having to think about replacing. Like most I get brake squeal sometimes when I start out on a ride but it quickly goes away.

But like you said...your mileage will vary. Just monitor the pad thickness and if you think they need replaced, do it.
 
:2thumbs: I have 25,000 miles on mine,ride 2 up most times and pull a trailer for about 5 k. Still lots left on the pads .
 
Squealing has nothing to do with the pads being worn (unless they are way too far and the sound is metal-to-metal). The pad thickness is the determining factor. Minimum pad thickness is 1 mm. If you are very close to that, they need to be replaced. As for the noise, there are several suggested cures, including the new third generation pads. Easiest cure is to stop hard a few of times from 45-50 mph, to wear off the glaze.
 
I got 20K on my first set and I'm 28K on this set but I will be changing them soon. Most of the miles are pulling a trailer but I use engine braking more than pads.
 
Brake Pads

I completed a 14000mi trip this summer:2thumbs: which, with the 3000 mi I already had on my Spyder meant that I had a total of 17000 mi.:clap: I had the dealer inspect things back in CA and they found that the rear brake pads needed replaced:lecturef_smilie:. I have the old pads and, yes, they needed replaced. They were about 1/4 mm thick. I also note that I'll need to replace my rear tire which I will have done this maintenance cycle.
 
Thanks guys... I do a fair amount of engine braking, so I guess I'm good at least for another 10k... I'm pit stopping at home base in Charlotte to do laundry, kiss the wife, and service the Spyder before SITS. So I'll look at the actual pad thickness then.

I guess stopping at home base doesn't allow me to call this trip a 4000 miler anymore...:gaah:, But it will be a personal high miler still.
 
I downshift a lot too and use the engine to brake, but it occurs to me that if I want to brake and have to use a part that'll eventually wear out from use (& cost $$ to repair), wouldn't it make much more since to wear out brake pads than to wear out a clutch?

Mind you, it is important to maintain the proper gear for your speed while slowing, but could it be more efficient and cost effective if you're coming to a complete stop, to disengage the clutch and down shift & hold the clutch in the entire time? By keeping in the proper gear you can release the clutch anytime you need if you decide not to stop completely.

Your thoughts?
 
I just had the rear replaced at 15K. The caliper was causing the pad to wear unevenly which also caused the two pins to wear a groove causing premature wear. The front pads were OK.
