Brake light OK - No running tail light?

Great photos and explanations, Dean! Of course, now you'll have to install Dzus fasteners in your splash pan and cut the change out time in half, lol.

As mentioned, I used a Dremel cut wheel and cutting pliers, small bit by small bit I got it done, carefully. My concern was cutting into the wires or weakening the lens box in some way, so I was careful, took my time, held back the wires and stayed away from the corners as much as possible.

I understand the frustration as well, both of our Spyders have the BRP Sport Racks, and have had to be removed and re-installed a few times already.

I can tell you that I would be frustrated if I had to remove the rear rack everytime a bulb needed to be changed also. With this mod, once you get in there the first time and trim the plastic a little, you can forever more change bulbs without removing the rack, or even the lens boxes. The BRP sports rack and lens boxes are not required to be removed even now to do the mod !!

Thanks, Scotty. It was just a mod to a mod - a mod to Neez's trimming idea, with no need to remove anything (rack or lens boxes) from the Spyder.

:thumbup: Indeed, the Dzus fasteners would be faster, ha-ha. I'm just glad to see this being a road-side 10min job now, instead of a major piece of work. So, if we have to replace one or both bulbs, a 10-15min road-side rest stop would do the trick!



Ok, now I have to get another spare bulb to have on hand, store it in the toolkit in the trunk !!!

Thanks Lamont. No, I don't think it was hot or deformed from heat in any way, if I recall correctly the back side of the connector is rubber, maybe giving the 'look' that it was altered from heat just in this lighting/photo.

Way to go. I was contemplating doing this mod as I can't swing the ESI LEDs at the moment... I was unsure where to start. Given that I have the Givi top mount and side mounts, I was not looking forward to dealing with burned out bulbs. I'm going to do this before my next trip.

Thanks for posting, Roger. I went to the shop yesterday and picked up a couple 1157's as spares for my tool kit. I did see some LED replacement bulbs similar to what you've posted, but only in amber and not clear. I've made a note of the post and the type of led replacements, thanks.

Just did this on mine finally... Other than some hot plastic from the dremel burning me... it was cake to do...though my tail piece was still installed. Not as neat as yours yet as I'm going to file some of the plastic shards out of the way... But this is a quick and easy mod and I'm no longer fearing a burned out bulb.

I have 8500 miles on the original bulbs, and I know many have had them burn up before that. Going to install new ones while I have them out.

Wear eye protection if using a dremel....I got some hot plastic on my safety glasses too!

Dan, glad this mod worked for you also! The bit of time doing the mod up front sometime when the splash pan is off really saves time later when the bulbs go out. Most importantly this really makes a road-side bulb replacement a 10-15 minute job, now!


Ah, yes, I agree with you on the safety glasses. I had a pair on when I fired up the dermal also. Good safety tip!

I got 18,000 ( about 11,000miles on my stock bulbs ).
