I have changed my front brakes on my spyder rs 2012 and the brake failure light comes on please help me
Hey Cirruss. After working on brakes or brake fluid, the brake failure message may come in. It’s always for one of two reasons.
1 - The brake fluid level in the reservoir chambers is still just a bit low. The remedy is to top it off. Observe the floats in the sensors in the rear of the chambers and add fluid until the top of the float is at least level to the outer ring of the sensor. Yes, it looks very full. Also make sure that the rubber gasket in the cap hasn’t unfolded and expanded. If it has, just push it back in. Should look like the picture in your manual. If this is the problem, the message will clear out on its own.
2 - What Joel was talking about. You possibly triggered the low pressure switch brake failure. It’s one of the few faults on a Spyder that sticks and must be reset. I believe that an RS is the same as an RT in this regard. Try this to reset;
- Ensure that the key has been off for at least 30 seconds to a minute so that all of the computers have shutdown.
- Turn on the key and wait for your display to completely boot up.
- Stand on the brake pedal hard as if you were heavily braking. Really hard. You will hear one click of the brake light switch, and possibly - but not always - a second click of the low pressure switch.
- Keep standing hard on the brake pedal and turn off the key.
- Continue standing hard on the brake pedal for another 30 seconds to a minute until your display completely shuts down. Now you can let your foot off of the pedal
- Cross your fingers and turn on the key. Do not stand on the pedal. See if the warning clears. If not, turn off the key, wait until the display shuts down again and go through the sequence again.
Keep in mind that if you got any air in the system during your brake work, that this is a valid warning. The air in the system causes the low pressure. It won’t reset until you bleed the system. As Joel said, sometimes you end up needing to have the dealer reset it with BUDS. Too bad you’re not closer. We’d do it here. Good luck.
