Boiling fuel, hot legs & feet, melted boot glue & passive limp home modes

Sounds like it..!!

Where is La Quinta in relation to San Diego...sounds like a combination of problems. Will wait to hear more..!!

Boiling fuel... nope

Hot feet... SpyderPOPs took care of that

Melted Boot Glue... Nope. The Heel of the boot came unglued, but it would be hard to blame it on heat.. It could be a quality issue with the boot.

Hot legs.. Only when wearing shorts, but all is well there too, because if I come off the Spyder, the pavement will scrape all the hot skin off anyhow...

Never went into limp mode

Jer,
Since you've brought this one up; what steps have you taken with your bike to quell the fires down below? :dontknow:
Did they help at all?

Hot foot- 2010 block off plate installed. 2012- No block off yet but heat doesn't seem to be too bad.
Melted boot glue- Nope. Don't but cheap boots.
Boiling Fuel- Haven't noticed. Do have fuel fumes on 2012.
Hot legs- She does have hot legs :roflblack:. Mine, :yikes:. (no heat related hot legs)
Limp mode- Had it on 2010 one time. No codes. Hasn't happened again. 2012, nope.

Both are RTSs.

This post is a compilation of information followed by a question.

It's Not a personal complaint.

Oh too, something I forgot to add - 'diminshed fuel mileage' when operating in high heat.

That last one is a definite problem for me. 18 - 19 mpg in high heat 25 - 26 mpg in cooler temperatures. No, I didn't buy my Spyder for its fuel mileage but I've had full sized 8 cylinder pick up trucks that got 19 mpg while towing a travel trailer!

Here is another question; where does the boiling fuel go if the tank is full?

Sorry Jer; I just wasn't sure where you were going with this discussion... :opps:

Hmmm OK... I have only logged 230 miles now in 4 days on my 2011 RTS SM5 with less than 1000 miles on it. 130 of it was in 95 degree desert heat.
1) No hot foot for me at all. But I do not have highway pegs yet.
2) No boiling gass. First fill up when I pulled over to the gas station spyder ambient temps said 102. I was worried to crack the gas cap based on reading of the boiling gas problem. Sheesh nothing... not even a venting sound! Filled it up no issue.
3) Hot legs and feet? #1 shows no hot foot. However sitting at a light I can feel some heat coming up around my legs. I am 6' 4" and my knees are well past the front of the seat side knee pads. But this was not uncomfortable so I am not complaining yet :)
4) Limp mode? Have not had that yet. However I can make the screen appear which freaked me out the first time I saw it. In the instructions it says you can keep the radio playing when your turn off the key by holding mode. When I do that the display shuts off and before the radio comes back on, I get the orange screen of death! After about 15 seconds it goes away and standard screen with the radio playing shows.
5) Melted boot. Since I do not have #1 ony way I can see that happening is if I tried to drag my boot on the ground ;)

I think he may be referring to a collection of problems that some of us have been experiencing lately

Precisely.

And I wonder. What makes one riders experience so different from another.

Seems it can only be one thing.

How they use their equipment.

Meaning, whether their personal experience is based on short jonts around town in high temprature conditions, or long hours of continued use in those conditions.

One does not compare well to the other.

Spyder is a 2012 RT-S SE5. Temperature range during the Summer lows in the 80's Highs most of the time 95-98 with periods of 101-105. Highest recorded when on my bike 112 (not the bike thermometer!) Humidity around 70-90 percent.

No boiling fuel.

Legs hot from the Sun and ambient temps but not from the right or left sides.

No melted Boots but do feel a little heat when at stop lights, goes away when moving.

No limp modes of any kind (except when my Arthritis act up)

Can't really tell if my mpg is worse in hot weather as I pretty much have a heavy right wrist!

I just got back from a 3 hour ride in mid 90's heat. My right foot/sock was securely glued to my very expensive boot. My point is this - the cost of the boot has little to do with the heat put out by the engine. The heat is clearly a design defect that Can Am needs to address. I'm hoping SpyderPops can help me.

Seriously some of us have a legit problems. installing heat shield blanket keeps the heat away from your legs but it stay under and perhaps keeping the gas boiling and this is dangerously flammable situation. Something needs to be done to get this heat eliminated and causing any problems.

My Spyder is a 2010 SM5.
With SpyderPops mods:
Below 85 degrees- fan doesn't come on much at all, unless stopped...no heat issues
Below 95 degrees- fan does come on while riding, on pretty much full time when stopped...feeling some heat under the seat and foot begins to feel hot, but still tolerable.
96 - 105 degrees- butt's on fire, foot's on fire, leg's on fire within 30 minutes, and gas boils below half a tank...constant gas smell when parked.
106 - 115 degrees- butt's on fire, foot's on fire, leg's on fire within 10 minutes, gas boils the same as above plus limp mode.

With wrapped pipes, swoop vents and lower port deflector(my mods) and no gas tank insulation:
Below 105 degrees - none of the above to date. The 115 mark is around the corner....

You are correct. You can't compare a quick trip of 20 to 50 miles to riding 650 to 750 miles in a day. I will have had my new Spyder for 2 months tomorrow and I already have over 8,000 miles on it which is more than some owners put on in 2 years.

2011 RT-AC in Missouri and Florida summer weather. Trips up to 1200 miles in heat.

No boiling fuel (if I had actual boiling fuel the machine would be gone in a heartbeat and I'd have either a Lehman Crossbow or HD TriGlide).
No melted boots.
No limp modes so far.
Heat coming off the engine on hot days no worse and usually much better than the heat off of a HD Heritage Soft Tail...which actually singed my right thigh in St Marrten a couple of years ago.
