Bluetooth Your Bike

Well, it WORKED!!!!
In the Texas forum, I had a discussion rolling about the best helmet headsets and the SENA SMH10 Bluetooth units were suggested (http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24065 ). I wanted to be able to talk with my bride while we ride, manage my iPhone (calls), AND listen to the FM/AM/WX on the bike. I took the chance (with some help of great suggestions from some folks here) and it all works!

http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20699 had the majority of the idea (THANKS InspectorGadget!!). I was not as clever, so I simply tapped the 2 wires on each back speaker and ran simple speaker wire to the left back seat area where the the XM normally lives. From Radio Shack, I bought an MP3 extension chord. Cut off the chord at about 2' to use the female end. I spliced the wires from the speakers to the new MP3 female cable. I used the knockout where the wired in headset lived. Installed a grommet and have the female end of the MP3 cable where I can easily access it (I'll add a waterproof cap when I can find one).

This is the Sony TMR-BT10A. Plug this into the new MP3 Female cable on the bike. Power it up, pair it with the SENA Bluetooth helmet units.

I played with the levels just a very little bit and it sounds GREAT! So... now I have all audio controls still on the handlebar, connection to my phone (and all of its functions of course), and I can chat with my sweetie when she rides with me!

Another reason to have the Sony unit this way is that it does need to be charged, like most all Bluetooth units. This makes it really simple to remove for charging, rain, and to keep it from being stolen.

While I had the bike apart, a I installed a boat load of LEDs. BIG weekend. Very tired and VERY happy!!. I'll try to post some pics as I can.....

bluetooth...

What I'd really like to locate is a bluetooth unit that could be wired in to the audio system, and include a12 volt power input connection. That way you wouldn't have to worry about recharging batteries. It sure would be nice to be able to utilize the RT audio system to it's fullest without having to add on the CB unit.

Now that I've used this thing for a few weeks, turns out that it must have the ability to turn itself off. I'm guessing that it senses lack of audio coming to it and after 'x' minutes, it powers down. MANY times, I ride to work, listening to radio, go in to the office, and not even think about turning it off. I get back on the bike at 6pm and it's off. Press its power button for 2 sec and whala... back to life for the ride home!:2thumbs:

its on my winter-work-plan .. good to get some inputs for that..
First - found out that i can hear enough (on the Rt) with the buit in speakers .. so decided NOT to use my bluetooth headset of the St1/Givi helmet - prefer to hear a little noise from the streets ..
Second - my TomTom works perfect with my telefon - have nothing to do if i come near the spyder the two units make the contact (bluetooth)
third - only missing the audiosignal in the original soundsystem - have no audio-out on the tomtom - so i plan a unit like this one
http://www.amazon.com/motorMOUTH-Bluetooth®-Bluetooth-reception-auxiliary/dp/B001AVSWEE
Last : if i hear music (ipod-radio) a telefon comes in - works that automatic (override) or must i push a button or so to hear it on the speakers..
if not - should i use the back-speakers for the GPS and leave the front how it is ..??
(have a standard RT no RTS)
any ideas ?? (all this works in my car since many years ..)

I am considering doing a similar setup on my RT, but have a couple of questions:
1. Would this approach work also using Scala Q2 bluetooth headsets ? ...Revised later... Scala Q2 is -not- compatible but their new G4 is.
2. My RT AC does not have rear speakers installed. Are the leads needed for connection likely to be live and near the empty rear spkr enclosures?
3. Could the Sony and the MP3 connection be mounted inside the rear trunk? They would be very close to the rear speakers, plus out of sight & weather. Would the Sony transmit ok from this location?

Thanks for your help!

I haven't looked at the Bluetooth version of the Q2 units, but I'll say 98% yes.

Don't know, but there are several here that know far more about the wiring than I do. They might. You CAN use the front speakers. I chose the back ones so I could use the fader to run the backs very low thus poering the Sony with a small signal, yet getting solid sound from the front speakers when I want.

Sure! I only put mine where I did for convenience. By it's nature, the Bluetooth specification is only good for <30' or so. I DO suggest that before to button everything up, do try it first. There is some of the back end that had aluminum foil like coating on it. It is a ground plane for the antenna. Avoid that area of the trunk.

I'll add this.... I've had 100% good success with the Sony and the bike audio. Like any Bluetooth, there are rare times that it 'burps'. Today was the first I used both helmets with Intercom and also my iphone. I had issues, but not sure what the source of the issue was (was driving at the time and couldn't stop). The helmet intercom dropped every-so-often. I'm gone for about a week, but I'll get to the bottom of it for sure and report back.
