BIKE TO BIKE COMMUNICATION

What do you all use for bike to bike communication. I have a goldwing with intercom and cb radio that I use when we ride with our riding club or when my wife is on the back with me. But she just purchased a spyder andI would like to communicate with her when we are riding together. Any ideas? She is on here and has a 2104 STS no radio etc.

motorcycle dave question for sure

if I understand this idea , with sena and blue tooth , you can link up with the wife , and talk with a good range , some say 1 mile , I do not know I am currently investigating this intercom system myself , going to give motorcycle dave a call , but back to your question , I think you can talk with your wife and other cycles and your wife will only be able to talk to you ...? I think this is right ( I believe both cycles will need the intercom adaptor to be able to have communication between all cycles )

I like the Uclear system I have because it does not require a boom mic, although the range is limited to about 1/2 mile on flat ground. Also, if connected to your phone via BT, you can actually call other riders if they are farther than the range of the system. That way, you do not need to worry about your com systems being compatible with each other.

I also ride a wing wife an rt. she uses a handheld Midland CB so we can communicate. Put it on a ram mount on her Rt works very well.

Bike to bike communication questions come up every once in a while.

Most people, myself included, prefer the Sena units. We have the SM 10. They now come in upgraded systems that talk with more than two units.

For us, the Sena work the best of any we have tried. Mostly NO noise with open line. Line of sight range. Up to a block or so.

I have also tried Chatterbox (thumbs down), Cardo (a bit on the noisy side), and Nolan N-com (quiet, but half the range of the Sena).

Others will chime in with their favorites.

We've had Cardo Scala Rider and Sena communicators and prefer Sena. We have a pair of 20S models for our Spyders (Texas) and a pair of 10S models for the motorcycles we keep in Maine. Both have been reliable and work well. The 20S model offers more features and voice command which is nice. Battery life for the 20S also seems to be better. Both feature Sena's "jog dial" which is easy to use with gloved hands - a nice touch in our opinions.

Three options I can think of right off hand. I came off of a Goldwing and still use CB with the factory option CB on my RTS so have a good understanding where you're coming from.

First option has been mentioned. Get a handheld CB and the Sena 10 Bluetooth adapter for your wife. She'll need to get a BT helmet headset. Then communicate via CB. This will work whether it's just the two of you or if you are with the group. Based on my experience last year going to Valcourt with my nephew, he used the handheld, this is an OK solution, but not super great. This won't work for those times, though, that she may want to ride as your passenger, unless she has two helmets, her current one and a new one with BT headset.

Second option: You get a second helmet and install a BT headset in it and your wife gets a BT headset only, not the CB and adapter. Then you can talk to her, but not the group. Wear your current helmet and talk to the group but not to her. This will work if you ride either with her only, or the group only, but not if she rides with the group also.

Third option: Change out your headset for a BT one. Then get the Sena Freewire adapter. That removes the cord between your helmet and bike and replaces it with a BT connection. Then you can communicate with your wife directly via BT and the group via BT through your current CB, but your wife can't communicate with the group.

If your wife is going to ride in the group then go with the first option.

+1 for the Sena 10s or newer, My wife and I have 10s and often ride with another couple with Sena 20s, we do sometimes talk out of line of sight, and frequently ride for hours in a 4 way conversation. If it's just my buddy on his Spyder and me on mine doing an Iron Butt, we've had the intercoms on, listening to our own radio over the bike speakers and only talk to call out pit stops when necessary.
The most important step was to adjust the speakers inside my helmet properly, and do the firmware updates. Learning how to set up multi-bike and 3 or 4 way conversations required reading and watching some Youtube videos but we've learned how to repeat it when needed.

PS. got my set from MotorcycleDave SL sponsor

Add another plug for the Sena’s. Been working really well for us in the Hills. Right now three of us ride together and once synced talked to each other easily.

Sena SMH 10

I have been using a Sena SMH10 for driver to passenger and bike to bike for many years on bikes, ATV and snowmobiles. It’s pretty much a line of sight range but it auto connects when you come back into range. We use it in open mike mode and even at 4+ years old battery still lasts 8 hrs on a charge. Works best with up to 3 radios in group. Will do more but gets a little flaky. Highly recommend.

Give me a call

I can help you with this and help guide you in the right direction.

I was impressed with what I have read on the Sena 30K. I'm kind of leaning towards this one at the moment.

I have both the Sena 30K and two different Uclear headsets and the sound quality from the Uclear is much better. Along with not having to deal with a boom mike makes for a more comfortable headset. I can pair to the Sena to my current Uclear AMP Plus and its not that hard but when I turn them off they forget the pairing. That is a problem all BT headset mfgr's need to figure out. Also, sometime next month Uclear will be coming out with a new unit that has voice control and wave technology where you don't have to touch buttons and when you put on or take off the helmet it knows to turn on or off. Cant wait to get one!
