• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

belt riding outer flange front sprocket

quasi

2012 RT-S. my drive belt is riding against the outer flange on the front pulley. belt is about 3mm off the flange on the rear sprocket. things are tight. belt is at spec on tension. i'm a pretty good wrencher, but I've no idea how to fix this.

Nature of the beast

Well Quasi, you could align the belt to be right up against the rear flange, and it would STILL ride against the front flange. Been there. Yours, like mine, has been like that since it came out of the crate, which I think applies to most 998 RTs. You're just noticing it. In a perfect world, it would be great if we could get the belt to ride between the two flanges, but it isn't going to happen without moving the motor, and besides, the engineers didn't have a concern with front flange clearance, anyway. Otherwise, there would be a spec for that like there is for the triple.

The belt is so long that the side loads on it from that front flange appear to be insignificant. And you probably have no indication of excessive wear on the belt edge, either. Obviously it's your machine and you can try to re-engineer things under there if you want. But I stopped worrying about it 30,000 miles ago, because I'm NOT going to try to adjust engine mounting, and it hasn't caused a single operating issue. Vibration is a bigger concern to me and now that Doc has the new roller for our ribbed belts, I'm going to put that on and "forget about it".

Interesting....

:agree: it is a thing and you need only concentrate on the rear..the interesting thing is up to the 2014 the front sprocket had a counter weight or flywheel attached to it on all models. In 2014 you could not get the flywheel for the RT and from then on as well as for the F3's. The RS, RSS and ST all continued having the flywheel. Perhaps because being a twin...:dontknow:

noticed the belt against the front sprocket flange when I removed the panels to check out the air ride system. the belt is "polished" on the outer edge so I expect this is where the squealing is coming from.

Squealing

Well, squealing was a thing, too, but it wasn't about the edge of the belt, it was about the teeth. If you perform this TSB and the squealing stops you'll have your answer.

thanks for the info. I tend to grease the belt about once a month. I have about 1/2 mile of dirt/gravel road to get to the pavement, so maybe I should grease the belt more often. we'll see how it goes. tks
