• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Belt noise

Recently the entire underside of the spyder including drive belt got coated in oil from a filter housing leak. Since then the belt at very low speeds less than 1 to 3 mph sounds like a roulette wheel with the clicking sound. While not certain it sounds like the noise disappears while moving faster under higher load. With some advice from others on the forum I tried some soapy water on the belt while manually moving it up and down in the driveway and the noise all but disappeared. Could the oil have done damage to the belt or rear sprocket. The rear rim had an unusual amount of black dust on it.
Any recommendations, should I change the belt?

Here's what you do..!!

check the condition of the belt, tension and the alignment and ryde it a while and it should clear up. If your up to it you could pull the sprokets and belt and clean them all..

I would clean it best I could and put some miles on it and see if it clears up.

Not sure if they make belt dressings for drive belts like they do for engine belts.

 :agree: I hate to say it, and I hope I'm wrong; but you might want to have that belt pulled and replaced.
(While the rear of the bike gets a thorough cleaning!)

Oil on the belt will cause no harm. In fact it is recommended to put some grease on the belt is it squeaks. If you feel the need to do something use some soap and water.

Did a thorough cleaning with Dawn soap and water the noise slowly disappeared as the belt got wet. Put it up on a jack and started it up and let it idle in first gear and noise gone. Out for a ride now and the belt has dried up and the roulette wheel sound is back again at very low speeds. Can't here it past about 5 mph.
The bearings in the rear hub where recently changed so don't think that is the problem, unless there is a bad bearing, however I would think this would get worse at higher speeds and the rear hub is not at all hot after riding.

Replacement Belt

I was able to pickup a new in box replacement on EBAY for $150/US with free shipping. This is the newer style (705501576) with the lubrication.

I think I got a good deal, even if this is not the problem, it is good to have a spare.

This belt in Canada is $400 with the taxes.

:ohyea:

Replaced the belt

Well, I replaced the drive belt with the new one and the noise is gone. Did a comparison of new to old and the teeth on the old belt are noticeably narrower and shorter through what I, expect is wear.

I am glad it was nothing more serious.

Belts will wear for sure and most don't notice it because its so subtle. How many miles?
