• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Belt Guard Yes or No?

Iwas checking Spyderpops site and came across THE "MISSING BELT GUARD"- FITS ALL SPYDER MODELS, 2008-2013. Since this is my first bike with a belt I was wondering if anyone hasexperienced problems with rocks and if this guard really helps preventthem. I have a 2013 RT-S and would like to take any precaution I can to keep possible problems with the belt from happening. :dg2: Thanks!
 
This spyder is also my first belt driven motorcycle. I was unaware of the fact that you couldn't drive them on gravel and i put a rock through my belt. I then ordered one of those shields. They're cheap and invisible when installed versus a $250 belt and the cost of installation. It's not even a guarantee that you won't still get a rock but cost is minimal
 
I live on a gravel road, and have to ride 1/2 mile to get to pavement. I bought the belt guard last year, just as some extra insurance. I do go very slow on the gravel though.
 
What surprised me is how many appearent pits are on the back of my belt guard. Certainly not all debris would have found its way to the belt, but I'm sure at least one would have. Just make sure you test fit it really well, because the adhesive that comes with the guard is very unforgiving. Once on, The bike will end up in the junk yard long before the belt guard will come loose.
 
Old saying..!!

"An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure" you may avoid dirt roads for the most part but many times you pull to the shoulder where pebbles and rocks are abundant... :thumbup:
 
It won't hurt to have one and help ease your mind knowing an extra protection is there. Right decision can't be bad.:yes::yes::yes:
 
This was the first farkle I put on my 2013 RT Ltd. It's a pretty easy install. I have a gravel driveway and I feel it was best to take this precaution.

During farming season the farm implements kick a lot of rocks out onto the pavement so you get forced to drive on gravel against your will. Our gravel is crushed limestone so it's got sharp edges on it
 
Shaft drives are not without their own particular set of peculiarities:
They do add weight, complexity and expense...
"Jacking" the rear suspension under power can be noticed by aggressive riders.
I like shaft drive; I'm just not sure if it would offer enough positive attributes to justify the costs...
 
If you are going to encounter gravel on a regular basis--you should have the belt guard. I have replaced two belts at a cost of $350 each, including labor and tow on one of the occasions.

Gravel is not the biggest enemy, I have run fast on gravel roads with no problems. It's those sticky little pebbles that come loose at the edge of an asphalt street and you cross over them entering or leaving a concrete drive. As it gets hotter you will be running a bigger risk as they stick to the tire when going slow and then drop onto the belt and you don't even realize it until it's too late.

The other problem is that the sprocket is almost as big as the rear tire pull over to the soft shoulder and no matter how careful you take off a little wheel spin and you dig down and the belt is in the gravel ,ive had shaft drive on all my bikes and the above problems have all been engineered out I'll take the shaft if I had a choice
 
Belt Guard

I have replaced one belt due to a REALLY little rock!!!!!:gaah: then had another rock embeded in my "new" belt!!! Got that beat out and finally all the way out and that induced me to get the belt guard!:yes: I live on a dirt road and go 1.3 miles. Short maybe but 2 rocks within ONE year was enough to get me to get the guard.:2thumbs: Sometimes I even remember to go slow on that dirt road!!!! like less than 10mph!!!:lecturef_smilie:
 
Anyone have a photo of the belt guard installed?

I drive 0.6 miles on chat (crushed limestone) to the blacktop but I go real slow...
