• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Barffed out my oil

Did a O/C about 3 weeks ago have about 400 km on since, riding today and I came off a light and my back wheel was spinning like mad. Pulled over to see left side all covered in oil. Pulled off the access panel and it appears the top bolt for the filter cover either came off or sheared off? If it did shear off, any idea what would cause that?

Sounds like a few possibilities.

1- Stripped threads
2- Bolt fell out

When you installed the filter cover, did you tighten each bolt a little at a time so they went in evenly? Or did you tighten one bolt (probably the bottom one) all the way first and then tighten the other?

If you tighten 1 bolt all the way with the other loose you'll crush the O-Ring on that side and it pulls the opposite end of the filter cover away from the engine. If you just snug that 2nd bolt it won't go into the case very far before it's tight.

Of course if you really torque down on these very small bolts into an aluminum case, you're going to strip them.

These bolts just need to be snug, not killer tight. The O-Ring does a good job of sealing.
 
When I get my heart rate back down (first break down and had to push it 15 blocks) I will take out the lower bolt and see whats still left in the hole in the top.

Very sorry to hear of your problem. But you are lucky you weren't trying to push a Gold Wing......Mike...:yikes:
 
Thanks for your help Ron. It looks like I might be lucky. The top bolt sheared off but good news is that there is 3/8" from the crank case. Should be able to back it out. Now here is the interesting part. Bottom bolt is "hourglassed" in about the same spot as the break on the top bolt. It appears that someone doesn't know how to use his torque wrench. So I guess next will be to back out the stud and order 2 new bolts and hope like heck the threads in the case are ok. Oh and clean up the mess all over left side

Sounds like you are very lucky. If you've got good case threads then you are golden (with a new set of bolts, that is).

I think that he's got them at about a bazillion foot/pounds! :gaah: I couldn't change a tire along the roadside if my life depended on it! :shocked:

Yeah no kidding my new truck calls for 150ftlbs or so. Good thing for roadside if i need to change a tire. Or till me cordless IR impact gun shows up one for truck and one for spyder.

I found this handy torque control device for Allen screws. It's called a stubby Allen Wrench. ;)
 
Bob your rite I had a blowout on my truck last week, had to jump up an down on tire tool to get tire off(already twisted 4 way lug wrench) wish I could get my hands around the guys neck that put them on :banghead:

That's assuming that your hands could fit around his neck... :shocked:

He has got to be built like a Sumo Wrestler's worst nightmare to get those nuts on that tight! :yikes:
 
So after taking a poll of a couple of fiends one says grab the stud with vice grips and back it out and the other says us a easy out. What would the spyderlovers "experts" do?
 
If it sticks out of the case, use the vice-grips (or one of the new Sears blt removal tools). If it broke off flush or inside the case, you will have to drill and use an easy out.

I sure hope there is enough sticking out of the case to get vise grips on. Be sure to get a good bite for the 1st spin as you may not get a 2nd chance.

Another option under those circumstances is to protect the case then saw or grind a slot in the bolt and use a screwdriver. If the bolt sticks out, but not far enough to grab with vice-grips or pliers, it usually has to be ground flat or flush to drill it for the easy-out.

A good tire shop will have a set of torque extensions that go on the impact gun and torque the lug nuts automatically and a wheel torque chart. Most Don't
 
I thought that they just did that because they've got a MEAN sense of humor! :shocked:
