Bad Knees and a Spyder?

Hello, I have one question, can a rider with two very bad knees, enjoy going on road trips on a Spyder? I have a road test set for tomorrow, if nothing goes wrong, most likely bring it home on Monday. Any advice would be welcomed. Can I get footboards?

They don't get much worse than mine. I can't help on boards... don't need them.

From 27 years of power lifting I am left with two bad knees myself. my left one is in need of replacement but I am still too young for them to do it as i would wear it out before my death and the next time is not at all pretty if I do. My right one although not as bad has had two surgeries on it as well.

I am able to ride my Spyder OK but after about an hour I am glad I have the highway pegs to stretch out a bit. However Iove my Spyder and will put up with the stiffness to ride it no matter what!

I don't know how bad your knees are but I think you can do it as well. I would suggest you get some highway pegs so you can change your position once and a while..

Good luck with your Spyder I hope it works out for you!

I have osteoarthritis of the spine, knees and ankles :spyder:is the only way to go. I couln't imagine trying to balance a 800lb 2 wheeler. With my spYder I just jump on and go no worry about knees ankles or back.:clap::yes::yes:. Enjoy your ryde. welcome

IN 06 I WRECKED THE HARLEY. SHATTERED THE RIGHT KNEE AND THE LEFT WENT BECAUSE OF THE LIMP. I PUT A VOYAGER KIT ON THE FXST TO HELP ME WITH MY KNEES. I HAD HIGHWAY PEGS AND THE WHOLE SET UP. KNEES STILL HURT LIKE #%^# AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR. I DECIDED THAT THE PAIN AND THE UPPER BODY WORK OUT I GOT ON BACK ROADS WASN'T WORTH IT ANYMORE. THEN I SAW A SPYDER. DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS BUT DID RESEARCH ON THE NET. FOUND A DEALER AND DECIDED THAT I WAS GETTING RID OF THE HARLEY AND GET ONE. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND SAT ON ONE AND IN 2 DAYS HAD THE DEAL DONE.NEVER EVEN TEST RODE IT. ALL THE TIME THINKING THAT I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO DO SOMETHING WITH THE PEGS. ALL IN ALL MY KNEES HURT LESS THEN THEY DID ON THE HARLEY. I WILL BE PUTTING ON HIGHWAY PEGS JUST SO I CAN STRECH THE LEGS. BUT I THINK YOU WILL DO FINE WITH THE SPYDER. OH! THE ORTHOPOD WANT ME TO HAVE BOTH KNEES REPLACED WITH IN A FEW MONTHS. KNEES STILL HURT BUT I CAN STILL RIDE SO I'M HOLDING OFF UNTILL I CAN'T STAND THE PAIN ANYMORE. GET THE SPYDER YOU WILL ENJOY IT. GOOD LUCK

Might wanna go back and see your surgeon. I'm pretty sure i see a couple of those screws cross-threaded. :joke:

I wish I could. He fled the country after he messed me and others up.

That's my Yamaha knee. I also have a Honda pelvis with two 7" Allen-head bolts. :yikes:

I was gonna talk about my zip-tied hip, but, see, now you guys are just showing off...

I think you should go for it!

My knees are older than I am and they don't the riding position on the Spyder. However, the highway pegs help a lot and I think there will be a solution to the stock peg position very soon. Highway pegs would be more useful with a hand lever for the brakes.

I have also had surgeries on both, and worn one of those out until 1/4" is gone off each bone. Replacements, bah humbug! Spyder treats me pretty well. No worse than any of the other bikes, and better than most. Much more stable if I need to stretch my legs. Wife has a shattered leg, up through the knee plateau. She is doing fine on the Spyder. No more complaints than with walking or riding in a car. Your test ride should give you a clue...if you aren't too excited to pay attention. Really not a bad ride with bad hinges, but everyone's injury is different. You have to see for yourself.

I put my deposit down on my Spyder in the fall of 2007. In the winter, I somehow messed up my right knee. :dontknow: I had quite a bit of pain from a torn meniscus and subsequent nerve problems in my right leg. I was worried that I had put a non-refundable $1000 deposit on something that I wasn't going to be able to use that much. When I got my Spyder in the spring of 2008, I found that riding the Spyder was actually more comfortable for me than driving my car.

The standard Spyder riding position is more ergonomic than most cars or trucks sitting positions. For better long range endurance, I got the highway peg brackets which allow me to stretch my legs a bit. However, I still find the standard riding position the most comfortable and ride that way probably 80% of the time on long hauls, 100% of the time while around town.

My Spyder is my daily driver (closing in on 5000 miles ridden) and I have used it exclusively (cold, wind, rain, shine, day, night) for my transportation from a 1 mile trip to the neighborhood market to a 1300 mile trip to Valcourt, Quebec.

Did i miss it but could someone send me the link to the place to buy the highway pegs.

When riding on the highway i think that would be more relaxing if i had a set

Home page on SpyderLovers. The BilletBikeParts.com link. We phoned in our order and it took about 4 weeks as he had to make another batch and send them to be powdercoated. I think they come much quicker if he has some in stock.

Total of 4 surgeries (3 left and 1 right) and can't comment on over 150 miles at once but 150 and under done several times with no complaints. I left sportbike riding because of knee strain and went to cruisers (VTX1800 and M109) but the Spyders has not bothered me once.

I guess once I actually get my own I'll be able to comment on i more but for someone 6'4'' and bad knees I have logged over a 1000 miles total and NO knee pain..
